Optimal Design of Viscoelastic Dampers and Support Braces (점탄성 감쇠기와 설치용 가새의 최적설계)

  • The purpose of this paper is to present the optimal design method of viscoelastic dampers and support brace stiffnesses. The dynamics of visco-elastic dampers and support braces connected in series is modeled by state equation. A constraint on maximum story drifts which are computed using RMS\`s of story drifts and peak factors is added to the optimization problem. The number of variables is reduced by including the constraint associated with the dynamic behavior of the structure in the procedure to compute the gradient of the inequality equation about constraint on the maximum story drifts. In the design example, it is confirmed that the design of dampers considering support brace stiffnesses is necessary when sufficient brace stiffnesses cannot be supplied. It is also found that unnecessary brace stiffnesses can be removed by adding brace stiffnesses to optimal design variables and that the increase of damper volumes to compensate for the variation of maximum story drifts is pretty small.

A Study on the p-y Curves by Small-Scale Model Tests (모형실험을 통한 말뚝의 p-y 곡선에 관한 연구)

  • The load distribution and deformation of single piles which is embedded in Jumunjin sand and Kimhae clay are investigated, based on small scale model tests. Special attention is given to the consideration of flexural rigidity in laterally loaded piles. To consider the flexural rigidity of the pile, tests are performed with the aluminium piles of three different length under different relative densities and undrained shear strength. The test results indicate that the initial slope from the results of tests is proportional to the depth and pile-soil rigidity in both soils. But the increasing rate of the initial slope in the clay is less than in the sand. In addition, the soil resistance is more related to the depth and soil condition than the pile rigidity. Base on the test results, an empirical formula is proposed, which is good agreement with previously published small scale model test and field lateral load test.

Evaluation of Gusset Plate Connection Stiffness in Braced Frames (가새 골조에서 거싯 플레이트 연결부의 강성 평가)

  • To improve braced frame performance, the connection strength, stiffness, and ductility must be directly considered in the frame design. The resistance of the connection must be designed to resist seismic loads and to help provide the required system ductility. In addition, the connection stiffness affects the dynamic response and the deformation demands on the structural members and connections. In this paper, current design models for gusset plate connections are reviewed and evaluated usingthe results of past experiments. Current models are still not sufficient to provide adequate connection design guidelines and the actual stress and strain states in the gusset plate are very nonlinear and highly complex. Design engineers want simple models with beam and column elements to make an approximate estimation of system and connection performance. The simplified design models are developed and evaluated to predict connection stiffness and system behavior. These models produce reasonably accurate and reliable estimation of connection stiffness.

  • In this paper, performance based design of coupling beam using non-linear static analysis is proposed considering probability distribution of flexural and shear strength in order to develop flexural hinge. This method considers post-yielding behavior of coupling beam and stress redistribution of system. It can verify the reduced effective stiffness to meet the current design requirement based on linear analysis. It also evaluates the lateral displacement under service load (un-factored wind load) properly. In addition, it can optimize the coupled shear wall system by taking stress redistribution between members into account. For a simplified 30-story building, non-linear static (push-over) analysis was performed and the structural behavior was checked at performance point and several displacement steps. Furthermore, system behavior according to the amount of reinforcement and depth of coupling beam was explored and compared each other.

Improved Static Element Stiffness Matrix of Thin-Walled Beam-Column Elements (박벽보-기둥 요소의 개선된 정적 요소강성행렬)

  • In order to perform the spatial buckling and static analysis of the nonsymmetric thin-walled beam-column element, improved exact static stiffness matrices were evaluated using equilibrium equation and force-deformation relationships. This numerical technique was obtained using a generalized linear eigenvalue problem, by introducing 14 displacement parameters and system of linear algebraic equations with complex matrices. Unlike the evaluation of dynamic stiffness matrices, some zero eigenvalues were included. Thus, displacement parameters related to these zero eigenvalues were assumed as polynomials, with their exact distributions determined using the identity condition. The exact displacement functions corresponding to three loadingcases for initial stress-resultants were then derived, by consistently combining zero and nonzero eigenvalues and corresponding eigenvectors. Finally, exact static stiffness matrices were determined by applying member force-displacement relationships to these displacement functions. The buckling loads and displacement of thin-walled beam were evaluated and compared with analytic solutions and results using ABAQUS' shell element or straight beam element.

  • Base on Korean design code, previous design code had not considered the effect of pavement on the orthotropic steel deck, however recent design code (Limit State Design Method, 2012) allowed to consider the effect of pavement on the orthotropic steel deck, and efforts to apply the stiffness of pavement to the deck continue. Meanwhile, research on the effect of ultra thin bridge deck overlay on the orthotropic steel deck is inadequate, previous study was limited in about fatigue stress and performance between pavement layer and the orthotropic steel deck. In this study, according to changing of pavement layer stiffness application, pavement materials, pavement thickness and steel deck thickness, analysis of deflection. In addition to base on this result, consider effectiveness of ultra-thin pavement stiffness application on the orthotropic steel deck.

Development of Measurement Device for Bending Stiffness of Footwear (신발의 굽힘강성 측정 장비의 개발)

  • In design of sport footwear, bending stiffness of its toe part is an important factor though it can be hardly measured. This paper introduces a device for measuring the bending stiffness. The device is simply designed with aluminum frames, one AC motor, two load-cells, one encoder and control hardwares. The mechanism measuring the bending moment of a shoe is described. Then, it was used to observe how the midsole material and design of a sports shoe affect on its bending stiffness. For the experiments, various specimens prepared, where each midsole of the specimens is different in terms of material, thickness and hardness. With those specimens, experiments were performed by using the device and then the bending stiffness was computed by applying the least square curve fitting after the bending moment data were measured. The specimen with Poly-urethane(PU) midsole has the higher bending stiffness than the one with Phylon(PH) midsole, and the midsole thickness affects more on the bending stiffness than the midsole hardness. Based on those results, it can be concluded that the measurement device can provide consistent bending stiffness data to sports footwear and the bending stiffness of a footwear measured by the developed device can be used as a major parameter in the footwear design.

Design and Manufacturing of Robotic Dolphin with Variable Stiffness Mechanism (가변강성 메커니즘을 적용한 로봇 돌고래 설계 및 제작)

  • Bio-inspired underwater robots have been studied to improve the dynamic performance of fins, such as swimming speed and efficiency, which is the most basic performance. Among them, bio-inspired soft robots with a compliant tail fin can have high degrees of freedom. On the other hand, to improve the driving efficiency of the compliant fins, the stiffness of the tail fin should be changed with the driving frequency. Therefore, a new type of variable stiffness mechanism has been developed and verified. This study, which was inspired by the anatomy of a real dolphin, assessed a process of designing and manufacturing a robotic dolphin with a variable stiffness mechanism. By mimicking the vertebrae of a dolphin, the variable stiffness driving part was manufactured using subtractive and additive manufacturing. A driving tendon was placed considering the location of the tendon in the actual dolphin, and the additional tendon was installed to change its stiffness. A robotic dolphin was designed and manufactured in a streamlined shape, and the swimming speed was measured by varying the stiffness. When the stiffness of the tail fin was varied at the same driving frequency, the swimming speed and thrust changed by approximately 1.24 and 1.5 times, respectively.

Influence of the joint stiffness on the segment design (이음부 강성계수가 세그먼트 설계에 미치는 영향)

  • The lining of shield TBM tunnel is composed of segments, therefore segment joints are induced by connecting each segment. Segment joint is considered as joint stiffness in the design of TBM tunnel. Depending on the choice among the different stiffness equations, the joint stiffness values determined can be varied largely. Therefore, the influence of joint stiffness value on the design of segment lining should be verified. In this study, the joint stiffness values were determined firstly by using various equations and total change boundary was justified. Within the change boundary determined, the member forces were calculated by changing the joint stiffness through the numerical analysis and consequently the stability of segment lining was investigated by applying nominal strength. The results showed that the segment joint stiffness did not affect the design of segment lining largely.

A Efficient Vibration Analysis Method for the Cooncrete-Steel Deck Slab (콘크리트와 강제데크의 합성 바닥판의 실용적인 진동해석 방법)

  • Composite slab structures consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material show generally anisotropic structural behavior because of different stiffness between the major direction and sub-direction of deck plate, and also the structures can be regarded as the laminated slab structures. It is necessary for the composite deck slab structures to carry out the exact vibration analysis to evaluate the serviceability. Also, it is needed to evaluate the exact structural behavior of composite deck slab with a layered orthotropic materials. In this paper, the thickness of topping concrete and deck plate are used to calculate the material coefficient stiffness of a sub-direction, and an equivalent depth calculated from sectional stiffness of concrete and deck plate is applied to get the stiffness of a major direction. The stiffness of two layered composite plates with different depth is determined by laminated theory. It is concluded that the presented method can efficiently analyze the structural behavior of composite deck slab consisted with steel deck plate and concrete material in the practical engineering field.
