  • An investigation on the effect of electrostatic drift field which can bring an additional aid to the photogenerated carrier collection in one side of the silicon solar cell has been carried out. The drift field was produced by the gradient of boron concentration in the p-type side in virtue of the strain compensation due to the tin dopant. A new method of ion implantation which is based on the principle of chiefly radiation-enhanced diffusion is adopted for forming the p-n junction in the solar cell. The open circuit voltage and the conversion efficiency of the ion-implanted silicon solar cell sample can be figured out to be 0.44 V and 5%, respectively.

  • For successful osteogenesis around the implants, interaction between implant surface and surrounding tissue is important. Biomechanical bonding and biochemical bonding are considered to influence the response of adherent cells. But the focus has shifted surface chemistry. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the MC3T3-E1 osteoblast like cell responses of magnesium (Mg) ion implanted titanium surface produced using a plasma source ion implantation method. Commercially pure titanium disc was used as substrates. The discs were prepared to produce four different surface, A: Machine turned surface, B: Mg implanted surface, C: sandblasted surface, D: sandblasted and Mg implanted surface. MC3T3 El osteoblastic like cells were cultured on the disc specimens. Cell adhesion, proliferation, differentiation, and synthesis of extracellular matrix were evaluated. The cell adhesion morphology was evaluated by SEM. RT PCR assay was used for assessment of cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. ALP activity was measured for cell differentiation. The results of this study were as follows: 1. SEM showed that cell on Mg ion groups was more proliferative than that of non Mg ion groups. On the machine turned surface, cell showed some degree of contact guidance in aligning with the machining grooves. 2. In RT PCR analysis, osteonectin and c-fos mRNA were more expressed on sandblasted and Mg ion implanted group. 3. ALP activity was not significantly different among all groups. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: It might indicate Mg ion implanted titanium surface induce better bone response than non Mg ion groups.

  • In a stream of aqueous sample, trace arsenic ions were quantitatively coprecipitated and detected in ICP-AES through hydride generation. In was used as a coprecipitating reagent. The precipitate was collected on a filter and dissolved by HCl. The eluted As was sent into the reaction coil to generate hydrides and analyzed by ICP. With optimal conditions, and with a sample of 0.3 mL, an enrichment of 70 was obtained with the sampling speed of 10/hr. When compared with coprecipitation and hydride generation technique, the sensitivity was increased by 7 and 10 times, respectively. The limit of detection limit$(3{\sigma})$ was 0.020 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ and the precision was 7-10%. Separation of $As^{3+}\;and\;As^{5+}$ were possible using citric acid in hydride generation.

  • Spectrophotometric properties of lanthanide complexes with methylthymol blue(MTB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB) were studied and also lanthanide(III) ions were determined by flow injection analysis on the base of the above results. The absorption maxima of lanthanide(III)-MTB complexes in the presence of CTAB are 635nm with molar absorptivity of $4.51{\sim}6.11{\times}10^4Lmol^{-1}cm^{-l}$ at pH 5.8. The mole ratio of lanthanide(III) complexes with MTB is 1:2 in the presence of CTAB. The calibration curves of lanthanide(III) ions obey the Beer's law in the range of 0.1 to 0.4ppm under the optimum condition. The samples throughput was ca. $60hr^{-1}$. The interfering effect of some cations and anions was investigated. The ligand anions such as tartrate and citrate, many transition and rare earth elements interfered severely and must be removed before the determination of lanthanide(III) ions.

  • Spectrophotometric determination of U(VI) and Th(IV) by Flow injection method is described. Chrome Azurol S forms water soluble complexes with U(VI) and Th(IV) in the presence of cethyltrimethylammonium bromide. The maximum adsorption of U(VI) and Th(IV) complexes are at 600nm with molar absorptivity of $2.3{\times}10^5Lmol^{-1}cm^{-1}$ and 611nm with molar absorptivity of $3.8{\times}10^5Lmol^{-1}cm^{-1}$ in acetate buffer medium having pH 5.0 and 5.5. The calibration curves of U(VI) and Th(IV) are linear over the range of 0.1~0.8ppm and the correlation coefficients are ca. 0.9960 and 0.9930 respectively. The detection limits(S/N) are 20ppb for U(VI) and 15ppb for Th(IV). The relative standard deviation are ${\pm}1.8%$ for U(VI) and ${\pm}2.1%$ for Th(IV). The sample throughput was ca. $50hr^{-1}$.
