Reductive reactivity of zero-valent iron nanoparticles was investigated for removal of nitrate-nitrogen which is considered one of the major water pollutants. To elucidate the difference in reactivity between preparation methods, iron nanoparticles were synthesized respectively from microemulsion and aqueous solution of ferric ions. Iron nanoparticles prepared from microemulsion were deposited on aluminum by electrophoretic method, and their reaction kinetics was compared to that of the same nanoparticles suspended in aqueous batch reaction. With an approximation of pseudo-first-order reaction, rate constants for suspended nanoparticles prepared from microemulsion and dilute aqueous solution were $3.49{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$ and $1.40{\times}10^{-2}min^{-1}$, respectively. Iron nanoparticles supported on aluminum showed ca. 30% less reaction rate in comparison with the identical nanoparticles in suspended state. However, supported nanoparticles showed the superior effectiveness in terms of nitrate-nitrogen removal per zero-valent iron input especially when excess amounts of nitrates were present. Iron nanoparticles deposited on aluminum maintained reductive reactivity for more than 3 hours, and produced nitrogen gas as a final reduction product of nitrate-nitrogen.
Excessive sweating of the palms, axillae, and face has a strong negative impact on the quality of life for many people. The existing non-operative therapeutic options seldom give sufficient relief and have a transient effect. But a definitive cure can be obtained by upper thoracic sympathectomy. From June 1997 to October 1997, 117 cases of the needle (2 mm) thoracoscopic thoracic sympathectomies were performed in the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery in the Respiratory Center Yong-dong Severance Hospital in Seoul, Korea. We have followed up on 94 cases which include palmar hyperhidrosis (n=85), facial hyperhidrosis(n=5) and axillary hyperhidrosis(n=4). There were 42 males and 52 females whose ages ranged from 14 to 63 years(median:23 years). The T2 ganglia and T3-4 ganglia were excised by electrocuting with a hook and endoscissors and were removed for histologic examination. There have been no mortalities or life-threatening complications. The surgical results were classified as excellent(much improvement, very dry) in 93.6%, good(some improvement, minimally wet) in 2.1%, and fair(slight improvement, still wet) in 4.2%. Five patients(5.3%) required closed thoracostomy drainage because of pneumothorax in the immediate postoperative day. Horner's syndrome occurred in one case. The compensatory sweating occurred in 67 cases(71.2%) and was embarrassing in 21 cases(22.3%) and disabling in 9 cases(9.6%) of these cases. Primary failure occurred in one case. The patient with primary failure underwent successful operation. Fifty-one patients had concomitant hyperhidrosis. Our experiences indicate needle thoracoscopic sympathectomy is a very effective, safe, and time- saving procedure for essential hyperhidrosis.
Purpose: Many facial burn patients suffer from hyperpigmentation and its treatment has been challenging. Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) has important physiologic effects on skin, including inhibition of melanogenesis, promotion of collagen biosynthesis, prevention of free radical formation, and acceleration on wound healing. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Vitamin C iontophoresis for the treatment of postburn hyperpigmentation. Methods: The authors performed a retrospective analysis of 93 patients who were admitted for the treatment of facial burn from February 2008 through February 2010. Among them, 51 patients were treated with Vitamin C iontophoresis to control postburn hyperpigmentation and 42 patients were not. Experimental group was chosen 20 of 51 patients who had been treated with Vitamin C iontophoresis and had normal facial skin on the comparable contralateral aesthetic unit. Control group was chosen 20 of 42 patients who were not treated with Vitamin C iontophoresis and had also contralateral normal aesthetic unit. The resulting color of 20 patients who were treated with Vitamin C iontophoresis was compared with the color of the contralateral normal facial skin using a digital scale color analysis. Results were analyzed with Wilcoxon signed rank test. Results: The analysis revealed significant improvement of hyperpigmentation in the experimental group compared to control group. The difference of intial value and the value in 6 months showed significant change. Mean (${\Delta}^{initial}$-${\Delta}^{6month}$) of experimental group was 11.61 and control group was 7.23. Thus, the difference between the experimental group and the control group was 4.38. Therefore, Vitamin C iontophoresis revealed significant improvement of hyperpigmentation in the experimental group compared with control group. Conclusion: Vitamin C iontophoresis is an effective treatment modality for postburn hyperpigmentation.
To identify the histological site of synthesis of yolk protein precursor, vitellogenin, by immunocytochemical method in the freshwater crab Eriocheir japonicus, we purified the yolk protein, vitellin, from crude egg extracts, and prepared the anti-rabbit serum against vitellin. Then, the site of vitellogenin synthesis was demonstrated by immunotytochemical method with PAP(peroxidase-antiperoxidase) reaction using the rabbit antiserum aganist vitellin. Female specific serum protein was identified in female serum by immunoelectrophoresis and Ouchterlony's immunodiffusion test for mature male and female sera. Based on the immunoelectrophoresis and Ouchterlony's diffusion test for mature male and female sera and crude egg extracts using antiserum against vitellogenic female serum absorbed with male serum, the female specific serum protein was identified as vitellogenin, detected in female serum only. The major yolk protein, vitellin, was purified from the crude egg extracts by DEAE-cellulose ion exchange chromatography, followed by sepharose CL-4B gel filteration chromatography. The molecular weight of vitellin was estimated to be about 245,000 dalton by sepharose CL-4B gel filteration chromatography. from the results of immunological analysis for vitellin, it was found that the vitellin antiserum contained the antibody against vitellogenin. In the results of immunocytochemical reaction by PAP method with the rabbit antiserum against vitellin, the vitellogenic oocytes and the hepatopancreas of mature female showed positive PAP reaction, but not in follicle cells and previtellogenic oocytes nf ovary, muscle of female and mature male hepatopancreas. Therefore, it showed that the hepatopancreas of mature female is the site of vitellogenic synthesis.
It is possible to achieve high strength ranging from 40 MPa to 70 MPa in alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC), and AASC is also known to have a finer pore structure due to its high latent hydraulicity and fineness of slag cement, which makes it difficult for chloride ions to penetrate. Electrophoresis is mostly used to calculate the effective diffusion coefficient of chloride ions, and then to evaluate resistance to salt damage. Few studies have been conducted on the fixation capacity of chloride ions in AASC. For this reason, in this study the chloride fixation within the hardened paste was evaluated according to the type and the amount of alkaline activators. As a result, it was revealed that among the test specimens, the chloride fixation was greatest in the paste containing $Na_2SiO_3$. In addition, it was found that as more activator was added, a higher level of chloride fixation was observed. Through this analysis, it can be concluded that the type and the amount of alkaline activators have a high correlation with the amount of C-S-H produced.
The purpose of this study was to assess the pain-relieving effect of iontophoretically applied prednisolone on the patients with temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain. 30 TMJ pain patients participated in this study. Inclusion criteria for subject selection were 1) tenderness of TMJ on palpation and 2) visual analog scales (VAS) of above 20 mm. The patients with polyarthralgia, rheumatic arthralgia, and systemic diseases were excluded for this experiment. The patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups; (1) Group 1 for administration of 2% prednisolone, (2) Group 2 for administration of 1% prednisolone, and (3) Group 3 for administration of saline. Phoresor PM600(Motion Control Utah, U.S.A) was used for administration of drugs by iontophoresis. Baseline and post-medication pain levels were recorded by VAS, pressure pain threshold (PPT), and palpation index (PI). Post-medication data were compared with baseline data for each group. The results were as follows : 1. All the groups showed significant decrease of VAS scores after treatment. 2. PPT was significantly increase only in Group 1 and 2 not in Group 3. 3. PI was significantly decreased only in Group 1 and 2 not in group 3.

Determination of chloride ion in concentrated NaOH solution by capillary electrophoresis has been studied. The analysis was performed by indirect UV absorption detection using chromate buffer at 254nm. The matrix effect of the sample has been observed so that the sensitivity in strong NaOH solutaion has decreased up to 10% of that in distilled water. The pH effect of the sample on the sensitivity of CE peaks has been investigated. The method for increasing the sensitivity have been investigated and the optimum pH and concentration of the buffer were 7.5 and 10mM, respectively. A cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB), was added to a buffer solution in order to reverse the electroosmotic flow(EOF) in the capillary. This results in a short analysis time and better peak shapes. Using this optimum condition, the determination of chloride ion in real environmental sample has been performed, which is captured in strong NaOH absorbent prepared for absorbing gas from chimney. The standard addition method has been applied for the quantitative analysis, and it was obtained the good reproducibility.

Lectin was purified by using $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, DEAE-cellulose ion-exchange chromatography and Sephadex G-150 column chromatography from Alismatis Rhizoma(AR). The specific activity of AR lectin was 50, 441units/mg, and purification folds were 114. The AR lectin agglutinated human erythrocytes of all types(A, B, O, AB). The molecular weight of AR lectin was estimated about 90, 500 daltons by gel filtration and each subunits were 42,000, 27,000 and 22,500 daltons on SDS-PAGE respectively. The hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was inhibited by sialic acid, glucose, ribose, galactose, sucrose, and lactose. It was also inhibited by cations such as $Hg^{++},\;Fe^{++},\;Cu^{++}\;and\;Pb^{++}$.
The objective of this research was to characterize fucoidans isolated from Laminaria religiosa and Undaria pinnatifida in Korea to obtain basic data for Production of soluble dietary fiber materials with biological functionality. Fucoidans were successively extracted 3 times at $65\%$ for 1hr with arid solution of pH 2.0, and cetylpyridinium chloride was used for partial purification. The yields of partially purified fucoidans were $2.71\%$ for L. religiosa, $6.65\%$ for sporophylls of U. pinnatifida and $0.40\%$ for blade of U. pinnatifida. The yield from sporophylls of U. pinnatifida was highest among the sample tested, whereas the yield from blade of U. pinnatifida was lowest. It appeared that the fuconidans content in different parts of U. pinnatifida varied. Partially purified fucoidans were separated into 3 fractions by DEAE-Sephadex A-25 ion exchange column and the maior fractions were refractionated with tractional precipitation with ethanol. $60-70\%$ ethanol precipitated fractions of 1. religiosa and sporophylls of U. pinnatifida turned out to be homogeneous by cellulose acetate electrophoresis and gel filteration chromatography. The molar ratios of fucose, galactose, and sulfate in the purified fucoidans(ethanol precipitated fractions) were 1 : 0.31 : 2.43 for L. religiosa and 1 : 0.97 : 1.99 for sporophylls of U. pinnatifida. The averaged molecular weights of the purified fucoidans from L. religiosa and sporophylls of U. pinnatifida were 31,000 and 38,000, respectively.
We conducted screening on Chinese medicinal herbs to examine their anti-complementary activity by hemolytic complementary assay $(TCH_{50})$. Among 55 kinds of herbs, several herbs showed relatively potent anti-complementary activity which decreased $TCH_{50}$, more than 70% in comparison with control. Then, hot water extracts of the following herbs, Curcuma aromatica, Areca catechu, Gleditsiae spina, Euonymus alata, Acanthopanax senticous. Lonicera japonica, Aconitum carmichaeli, Curcuma zedoaria and Cinnamoum cassia, which were shown relatively potent anti-complementary activity were partially purified and analyzed their chemical properties. These activities were resistant to digestion with pronase but decreased by treatment with $NaIO_4$. These results may indicate that the complement activating ability in their herbs is due to polysaccharide. Furthermore, the anti-complementary activity of Areca catechu which was showed the most potent activity, was reduced partially in the absence of the $Ca^{++}\;ion$. After incubation of the normal human serum with partially purified polysaccharide of A. catechu in the absence of $Ca^{++}\;ion$, a cleavage of C3 in the serum was found to have occurred through immunoelectrophoresis using rabbit anti-human C3 serum. These results indicate that the mode of complement activation by polysaccharide of A. catechu is via both the alternative and classical pathway.
