Ionic liquids are expanding their applications in various fields of chemistry, due to their unique properties such as negligible volatility, immisciblity with hydrocarbons, high electrical conductivity, and tunable acidity and basicity. In this paper, the physical properties, synthesis, and commercial applications of ionic liquids are discussed. Recent research trends are also briefly reviewed, particularly on application of ionic liquids to catalysis, biomass, and $CO_{2}$ capture and utilization.
Since carbon dioxide, $CO_2$, was revealed as a major greenhouse gas, techniques for its separation, capture, and storage have received increasing interest in recent years. Aqueous amines are the most widely accepted $CO_2$ absorbents, but they cause the problems such as high regeneration energy, thermal degradation, and loss of absorbents due to their volatility. Ionic liquids having high thermal stability, extremely low vapor pressure, and capability of selectively absorbing specific gases have been proposed as new $CO_2$ capturing solvents which may potentially replace aqueous amines. By reviewing the ionic liquids having capability to absorb $CO_2$ reported in previous papers, we seek to develop a comprehensive understanding on the factors that influence the $CO_2$ solubility in ionic liquids such as their structures, absorption temperature, pressure, water content, etc., and to estimate the potential of ionic liquids as $CO_2$ separating media.

As an effective method for extraction of acrylic acid, aqueous two-phase systems based on morpholinium ionic liquids were used in this study. Effects of the alkyl chain length of cation in morpholinium ionic liquids on phase diagram and extraction efficiencies were investigated. Experimental results show that aqueous two phase systems can be formed by adding appropriate amount of morpholinium ionic liquids to aqueous $K_2HPO_4$ solutions. It can be found that the ability of morpholinium ionic liquids for phase separation followed the order [HMMor][Br]>[OMMor][Br]>[BMMor][Br]>[EMMor][Br]. There was little difference between binodal curves of imidazolium ionic liquids and those of morpholinium ionic liquids. 50~90% of the extraction efficiency was observed for acrylic acid by aqueous two phase extraction of acrylic acid with morpholinium ionic liquids. It can be concluded that morpholinium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ were effective for aqueous two phases extraction of acrylic acid comparing to imidazolium ionic liquids/$K_2HPO_4$ systems because of their lower cost.

In this study, ionic liquids were synthesized to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) on a laboratory scale. The vapor-liquid absorption equilibrium device (VLE) was used to investigate the carbon dioxide absorption capacity. In the regeneration study, the absorption capacity after regeneration was reduced by approximately 7% for all ionic liquids, in which the anion was sulfite-based, showing excellent regeneration. Ethyl sulfite showed the highest absorption capacity of CO2 among the ionic liquids based on the sulfite anion. In particular, the absorption capacity of [beim] ethyl sulfite was 1.1 mol CO2 / mol IL at an absorption equilibrium pressure of 22 bar. In the regeneration study, the absorption capacity after regeneration was reduced by approximately 7% for all ionic liquids, in which the anion was sulfite-based, from which regeneration is outstanding. After the absorption experiment, the viscosity of the sample tended to decrease by approximately 8% compared to that before the absorption experiment. On the other hand, the absorbent was synthesized in the first step. Moreover, the raw material used is also inexpensive and has excellent reproducibility and highly stable absorbent capacity.
In order to develope a clean technology by liquid-supported membrane of ionic liquid/PVDF, the solubility of R22 and HFP gases using BMIBF4 as ionic liquid were measured at temperatures from 0 to $30^{\circ}C$, at total pressures up to 4 bars. The solubility of R22 in this ionic liquid was shown a rapid increasing tendency with increases of pressure and decreases of temperature, respectively, whereas the solubility of HFP was showed only a little in the same conditions. Based on these results, liquid-supported membranes of ionic liquid/PVDF were prepared by variables of the deposition amount of ionic liquid in polymer matrix, PVDF and were applied to the separation of fluoro-gases(R22, HFP) including $N_2$ gas. The permeability of R22 was rapidly increased by depending on the deposition amounts of ionic liquid, whereas both of HFP and $N_2$ were just showed so little. Especially, the diffusivity coefficient and solubility parameter of R22 were increased by lower operating temperatures and increased deposition amount of ionic liquid in 1iquid membrane. In conclusion, the selectivity of R22 against HFP was changed to 10-45 times depending on both of operating temperatures and the deposition amount of ionic liquid in BMIBF4/PVDF liquid membrane.
In this study, imidazolium salt ionic liquid on amorphous silica was prepared and its catalytic performance in the cycloaddition of $CO_2$ with allyl glycidyl ether (AGE) to produce heterocyclic carbonate was investigated. The ionic liquid was generated on chloropropyl functionalized silica through the immobilization of imidazole. The prepared catalyst was characterized using a number of instrumental analysis including XRD, BET, $^{29}Si$ MAS-NMR and SEM. $^{29}Si$ MAS-NMR showed that the ionic liquid formed adduct with the chloropropyl groups attached to the silica surface. The immobilized ionic liquid showed very good catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of $CO_2$ with AGE, showing 55-61% of AGE conversion with over 85% of the carbonate selectivity at $80-120^{\circ}C$. Its AGE conversion and selectivity to the carbonate were even higher than the homogeneous analog, 1-n-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bromide (BMImBr).
$TiO_2$ particles with various shapes were synthesized by using a modified sol-gel method with binary ionic liquids. The structural properties of the particles were significantly affected by the composition of ionic liquids. This is mainly attributed to the interaction between the organic solvent and ionic liquid at the interface leading to the formation of particle structure. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared samples was also examined for the degradation of 4-chlorophenol. Among the particles, $TiO_2$ prepared with 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate showed the best photocatalytic performance.
In this study, imidazole-based ionic liquid on polystyrene was prepared and its catalytic performance in the cycloaddition of $CO_2$ with allyl glycidyl ether(AGE) to produce allyl glycidyl carbonate was investigated. The ionic liquid was generated on the polystyrene-based polymer through the immobilization of imidazole. The prepared catalyst was characterized using a number of instrumental analysis including EA, FT-IR, TGA and SEM. The immobilized ionic liquid showed very good catalytic activity for the cycloaddition of $CO_2$ with AGE, having 80% of AGE conversion with over 96% of the carbonate selectivity at $120^{\circ}C$ under 1.48 MPa $CO_2$ pressure. The immobilized ionic liquid can be used for the reaction up to four consecutive runs without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

A green procedure is described for the preparation of a series of ionic liquids where two 3-methylimidazolium cations were bridged with ethylene glycol chain as linkers. Diethylene glycol-bis(3-methylimidazolium) ditosylate, triethylene glycolbis(3-methylimidazolium) ditosylate, and tetraethylene glycol-bis(3-methylimidazolium) ditosylate were heated with 3-methylimidazole under solvent-free condition to give the corresponding bis(3-methylimidazolium) ditosylate ionic liquids efficiently in a short time.
The membrane-based CO2 capture is a fast-growing branch in gas separating field. Ionic liquid assisted mixed matrix membrane (MMM), which consists of organic fillers with dispersed ionic liquid, shows high potentiality as a candidate for CO2 separation medium. In MMM, various kinds of ionic liquid and inorganic filler are incorporated into polymer to enhance gas separating performance. Especially, the strong interaction between ionic liquid and organic filler gives huge influence on enhancing the separating performance by increasing affinity, selectivity and adsorption of CO2 into the framework. Also the mechanical properties of metal organic framework are positively tuned by input of ionic liquid to improve CO2 permeability and selectivity. In this review, study of various combinations of ionic liquid and metal organic framework (MOF) in the polymeric membrane for carbon dioxide separation is discussed.
