  • This paper presented an application of the geotechnical hybrid-online simulation to the consolidation settlement problem of soft clay. Conventional numerical analyses have used idealized soil constitutive models obtained from the laboratory soil tests. On the other hand, in the hybrid-online simulation, soil response was directly introduced to numerical analyses from the soil element test, and, therefore, the complicated parameter estimation was not required in this method. Fundamentals of the hybrid-online simulation method and the development of the algorithm and corresponding hardware and software for the system were presented in this study. Furthermore, an incremental loading consolidation and the hydraulic conductivity test and a comparative study using the Terzagh's conventional consolidation theory were carried out for the system verification including the performance of the experimental device and source coding of software components, and the data reliability obtained from the system. In conclusion, we found that the hybrid-online consolidation simulation system could reproduce the consolidation behavior of the remolded Kaolinite specimen withoutany discrepancies.

  • The scientific research method went through construction of hypothesis and collection of data by experiment or observation and abstracting the hypothesis based on the experience which uses the data. The statistical methodology plays an important role in this process. The method which acquires a data becomes an initial process of abstraction and a survey research using structured questionnaires is a basic tool. After the data is acquired, the high-class statistical techniques such as the regression analysis and the linear structural equation model are used to abstract a hypothesis. By the way, from time to time the concepts which have become abstractive do not help us to understand an actual phenomena, rather it is need to extract some knowledge from questions themselves. In this article, we review the well known statistical methods providing the ways of finding core questions which possibly answer a researcher wants to know. We deal with course evaluation data as an example and try to set up the strategy for improving course evaluation.

  • Synthesis of ETBE as an octane number enhancer from ethanol and isobutene in a flow reactor under atmospheric pressure was studied. Amberlyst-15 and Amberlyst XN-1010 were used as catalysts within the temperature range of $70-140^{\circ}C$. The activity of Amberlyst 15 was higher than that of Amberlyst XN-1010. The reaction rate data obtained under differential reactor condition were tested by a linear regression method to determine the reaction mechanism and kinetic parameters. The ETBE synthesis reaction seems to be proceeded via the LHHW(Langmuir-Hinshelwood-Hougen-Watson) machanism. The activation energy of the surface reaction was estimated by the reaction rate constants as well as the adsorption equilibrium constants. Apparent activation energies are 18.64 and 24.19kcal/mol for Amberlyst-15 and Amberlyst XN-1010, respectively.

  • An experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of leading edge extension(LEX) on the surface prssure distribution over a delta wing in a subsonic wind tunnel. Freestream velocity was 40m/sec and Reynolds number per meter was 1.7x$10^6$ with total pressure of 101Pa and total temperature of 278K. LEX changed the surface pressure distribution on the wing dramatically. Comparing with the results without LEX, the peak of pressure distribution decreased on the front chordwise location but it turned to increase on the rear chordwise location with increase of the angle of attaci. The spanwise gradient of the pressure distribution also increased in the rear chordwise location. Without LEX, the peak of pressure distribution increased and decreased irregularly with increase of the angle of attack at each chordwise location, but LEX made it increased almost linearly with increase of the angle of attack at all of the chordwise locations.

  • Many fire-fighters suffer from the burn injuries, and the severe burns are the most catastrophic injury a person can survive, resulting in pain, emotional stress, and tremendous economic costs. It is important to understand the physiology of burns for prevention from skin burns and a successful treatment of a burn patient. But a few researches have been presented because the complex physical phenomena of our inside body like non-linearity characteristics of human skin make them difficult. Thus in this study, thermal analyses of biological tissues exposed to a flash fire causing severe tissue damage were studied by using a finite difference method based on the Pennes bio-heat equation. The several previous models for skin thermo-physical properties were summarized, and the calculated values with those models of tissue injury were compared with the results obtained by the previous experiment for low heat flux conditions. The skin models with good agreement could be found. Also, the skin burn injury prediction results with the best model for high heat flux conditions by flash flame were suggested.

  • This study have been conducted to analyze the feasibility of establishing Contamination Warning System(CWS) that is capable of monitoring early natural or intentional water quality accidents, and providing active and quick responses for domestic C_water supply system. In order to evaluate the water quality data set, pH, turbidity and free residual chlorine concentration data were collected and each statistical value(mean, variation, range) was calculated, then the seasonal variability of those were analyzed using the independent t-test. From the results of analyzing the distribution of outliers in the measurement data using a high-pass filter, it could be confirmed that a lot of lower outliers appeared due to data missing. In addition, linear filter model based on autoregressive model(AR(1) and AR(2)) was applied for the state estimation of each water quality data set. From the results of analyzing the variability of the autocorrelation coefficient structure according to the change of window size(6hours~48hours), at least the window size longer than 12hours should be necessary for estimating the state of water quality data satisfactorily.

  • The J-integral used as a ductile crack initiation criterion has been discussed for the impact loaded elastic-plastic 3PB specimens. The experimental method to measure or estimate the J-integral history has been investigated and its result has been compared to the obtained elastic-plastic values by the finite element model of this study. These numerical results and the experimental curves are found to agree closely. J-integral can be calculated by only numerical analysis with the finite element model. It is proved that simple calculation can be made in order to find the possible value of J-integral by crack mouth opening displacement(CMOD) in the dynamic nonlinear fracture experiment of 3-point bend(3PB) specimen. The property of elastic-plastic material is considered at different impact velocities. The J-integral may be estimated from the crack mouth opening displacement which can be measured directly kom photographs taken during impact experiments.

  • Numerical modeling and inversion for electromagnetic exploration methods are essential to understand behaviour of electromagnetic fields in complex subsurface. In this study, a finite element method was adopted as a numerical scheme for the 2.5-dimensional forward problem. And a finite element equation considering linear conductivity variation was proposed, when 2.5-dimensional differential equation to couple eletric and magnetic field was implemented. Model parameters were investigated for near-field with large source effects and far-field with responses dominantly by homogeneous half-space. Numerical responses by this study were compared with analytic solutions in homogeneous half-space. Blocky inversion model was modified to be applied to the forward calculation in this study and it was also adopted in the inversion algorithm. Resolution for isolated bodies were investigated to confirm possibility and limitation of inversion for electromagnetic exploration data.

  • Fuel cell generators as the distributed generation system with a few hundred watt$\sim$a few hundred kilowatt capacity, can supply the high quality electric power to user as compared with conventional large scale power plants. In this paper, PEMFC(polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell) generator as micro-source is modelled by using PSIM simulation software and DSP based fuel cell hardware simulator based on the PSIM simulation model is implemented. The relation of fuel cell voltage and current(V-I curve) is linearized by first order function on the ohmic area in voltage-current curve of fuel cell. The implemented system is composed of a PEMFC hardware simulator, an isolated full bridge dc boost converter, and a 60[Hz] voltage source PWM inverter. The voltage-current-power(V-I-P) characteristics of the implemented fuel cell hardware simulator are verified in load variation and transient state and the 60[Hz] output voltage sinusoidal waveform of the PWM inverter is investigated under the resistance load and nonlinear diode load.
