  • In this study, marine heat waves on coastal waters of Republic of Korea were detected using satellite-based Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly (SSTA). The detected results were compared with the warm water issues reported by the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS). Marine heat waves detection algorithm using SSTA based on a threshold has proposed. The threshold value was defined as 2℃ for caution and 3℃ for warning issues, respectively. Daily averaged SST data from July to September of 2017-2018 were used to generate SSTA. The satellite-based detection results were classified into nine areas according to the place names used in the NIFS warm water issues. In the comparison of frequency of marine heat waves occurrence to each area with the warm water issue, most areas in the southern coast showed a similar pattern, that is probably NIFS uses spatially well distributed buoys. On the other hand, other sea areas had about two times more satellite detection results. This result seems to be because NIFS only considers the water temperature data measured at limited points. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of a satellite-based warm/cold water monitoring system in coastal waters.

  • This study was conducted to investigate antioxidant enzyme activity (catalase and superoxide dismutase) and Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) mRNA variation in hepatopancreas of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) cultured under several acute water temperatures. Abalones were cultured at 10, 15, 20, 25 and $30^{\circ}C$, for 0, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours, respectively. The HSP70 mRNA expression in hepatopancreas was more increased at $30^{\circ}C$ compared to those at 10. 15, 20 (control) and $25^{\circ}C$. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was increased in hepato-pancreas at all water temperature conditions compared to the control ($20^{\circ}C$). The SOD activity at high water temperature (25 and $30^{\circ}C$) tended to be increased after 12 hours, and was increased immediately after exposure to low water temperature (10 and $15^{\circ}C$). and then was recovered to starting level after the increase. Also, catalase (CAT) activity in hepatopancreas was increased in all the groups except for at $10^{\circ}C$ than the control ($20^{\circ}C$). Survival rate of abalone was $100\%$ at 10, 15, 20 and $25^{\circ}C$, but $92\%$ at $30^{\circ}C$. Thus, according to our study, when abalone is appeared at $20^{\circ}C$, defense mechanism against stress at low water temperature can be accelerated to be stabilized at about $5^{\circ}C$. In the case of exposure of abalone to high water temperature, antioxidant enzyme and HSP70 expression were increased due to elevated physiological stimulation factor, such as temperature.

  • This study Investigated the effects of $estradiol-l7{\beta} (E_2)$, $17{\alpha}-methyltestosterone$ (MT) and high temperature (WT) on gonadal sex differentiation in black rockfish, Sebastes srhlegeli. fish were reared to oral adminstration of E, at nominal concentrations of $20, 40 and 60 {\mu}g/g diet$, and MT at nominal concentration of 20 and $50 {\mu}g/g$ diet from 56 days to 77 days after parturition. In the treatment of WT, water temperature of the breeding tanks ranged $27.0{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$ more than $10^{\circ}C$ approximately, in comparison to the control and other experimental group, In the process of sex differentiation until 56 days after parturition, gonads were composed of mostly gonia cells, sexually undifferentiated. In contrast, 128 dal's after parturition, the ovaries were composed of ovarian cavity and lamellae, and oogonia and perinucleolus oocytes were distributed in the lamellae of ovary, and the testes were composed of a number of seminiferous tubule, and spermatogonia were distributed in the seminiferous tubule, and also melanophore scattered in the matrix layer of testis. In the sex ratio, more females than male were observed from $E_2$. treatment groups when compared to the control, but more males than females were observed from MT and WT treatment groups when compared to the control. In the results of the present study, the concentration and kinds of the sex steroid hormones, and also the rearing high temperature caused to the factor of sex determination in the process of sex differentiation of black rockfish.

  • Sea surface temperature (SST) is a factor that greatly influences ocean circulation and ecosystems in the Earth system. As global warming causes changes in the SST near the Korean Peninsula, abnormal water temperature phenomena (high water temperature, low water temperature) occurs, causing continuous damage to the marine ecosystem and the fishery industry. Therefore, this study proposes a methodology to predict the SST near the Korean Peninsula and prevent damage by predicting abnormal water temperature phenomena. The study area was set near the Korean Peninsula, and ERA5 data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) was used to utilize SST data at the same time period. As a research method, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm specialized for time series data prediction among deep learning models was used in consideration of the time series characteristics of SST data. The prediction model predicts the SST near the Korean Peninsula after 1- to 7-days and predicts the high water temperature or low water temperature phenomenon. To evaluate the accuracy of SST prediction, Coefficient of determination (R2), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) indicators were used. The summer (JAS) 1-day prediction result of the prediction model, R2=0.996, RMSE=0.119℃, MAPE=0.352% and the winter (JFM) 1-day prediction result is R2=0.999, RMSE=0.063℃, MAPE=0.646%. Using the predicted SST, the accuracy of abnormal sea surface temperature prediction was evaluated with an F1 Score (F1 Score=0.98 for high water temperature prediction in summer (2021/08/05), F1 Score=1.0 for low water temperature prediction in winter (2021/02/19)). As the prediction period increased, the prediction model showed a tendency to underestimate the SST, which also reduced the accuracy of the abnormal water temperature prediction. Therefore, it is judged that it is necessary to analyze the cause of underestimation of the predictive model in the future and study to improve the prediction accuracy.

  • This study contains research on a bio-monitoring system (BMS) capable of detecting abnormal high water temperatures, the shell valve movements (SVMs) of Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), which were measured at four different temperature (5, 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$) under laboratory conditions. All the Pacific oysters were kept under fasting conditions for 3 days to prevent the influence of food and excretions before the onset of the experiments. SVMs did not detect at $5^{\circ}C$. However, SVMs increased with an increase in temperature (at $10^{\circ}C$ : $6.31{\pm}2.18times/hr$ and at $20^{\circ}C$: $22.0{\pm}10.0times/hr$). At $30^{\circ}C$, SVMs were divided into two groups: those with no SVMs as at $5^{\circ}C$ and those with SVMs similar to conditions at $20^{\circ}C$($23.9{\pm}9.35times/hr$). This indicates oyster shells maintain a closed condition due to a decrease in metabolism at $30^{\circ}C$, although some Pacific oysters had active SVMs due to an increase in metabolism. If a BMS using the SVM status of Pacific oysters was installed to monitor abnormal high water around oyster farms, early warning levels and serious alerts might be made available more rapidly for SVMs of more than ca. 30 times/hr and closing conditions in a matter of hours, respectively. Therefore, a BMS using the SVMs of Pacific oysters might be an effective early warning system for abnormal high water temperatures.

  • Mass mortality of Halocynthia roretzi has been occurred in culturing grounds of southern coast of Korea during the long period of summer drought and the unusal high water temperature in 1988. Especially Halocynthia roretzi was damaged severely in 2 years group. Therefore we verified these phenomena by observing the environmental factors of culturing grounds and by evaluating oxygen consumption rate in indoor experiment. In culturing grounds, the mortality rate was high in Namhae Mizo area where water temperature was the highest and the lowest in dissolved oxygen concentration as low as 3.76m/l in field observation. In indoor experiment, the higher the water temperature, the more mortality was occurred and the salinity above 30 had no effect on its mortality. In oxygen consumption rate experiment, the smaller needs more oxygen than larger one, i. e., oxygen demand per unit weight was higher in 2 years group than that of 3 years. The theoretical and the actual minimum oxygen demands(MOB) for preventing asphixation was 3.7ml/kg/h at $20^{\circ}C$ and 6.3ml/kg/h gat $25^{\circ}C$, But actual MOD was 4.3ml/kg/h at $25^{\circ}C$ in indoor experiment. It seemed that mass mortality of Halocynthia roretzi in summer was caused by metabolism disorder due to insufficient oxygen level influenced by the high water temperature and the high density of Halocynthia roretzi, which results in the paucity of oxygen especially in 2 years groups.

  • Annual reproductive cycle of Bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus (RAFINESQUE) were studied in the natural population. Based on these informations, reproductive mechanism of the fish including activation, degeneration and remature were examined under the controlled conditions of temperature and photoperioe. In the natural populations, gonads began to grow with the temperature increase in March ana matured in June, and spawning occurred in July. With the onset of the shorter day-length and the maximum temperature condition in August, the gonads began to degenerate. Resting stage was continued during winter season. In the laboratory-reared population, activation of the gonads was initiated by the complex environmental factors including higher temperature$(>15^{\circ}C)$ and longer photoperiod $(>14L)$. For the maturation, photoperiod of more than 14 hours was critical. Under this condition higher temperature was the only compensative factor. Regeneration of the gonads was induced by higher temperature$(>25^{\circ}C)$ and the shorter photoperiod accelerated the regenerative processes. Even from the resting stage the gonads can be induced to matured stage by the longer photoperiod $(>15L)$. Based on these observations, the reproductive rhythm of this fish is supposed to be artificially controlled.

  • To investigate effects of water temperature on immune response of flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, against Edwardsiella tarda, fish were immunized with formalin killed E. tarda antigen, and humoral immune response of these fish were observed. At lower water temperature (12 and $15^{\circ}C$), the antibody appeared 2 to 3 weeks after injection of formalin killed E. tarda antigen and the maximum agglutination titer was 16 and 32, respectively. However at higher water temperature (20 and $23^{\circ}C$), the antibody appeared one week after injection and the maximum agglutination titer was about 2,048. Once produced agglutination titer was sensitively responsed to variation of water temperature and showed that this phenomenon had also a similar tendency under natural condition. And it showed that agglatination titer of flounder immunized with formalin killed E. tarda maintained above 19 months.

  • To stabilize the lantern cage culture system of Patinopecten yessoensis(Jay) in the eastern coast of Korean peninsula, optimum conditions such as time of transplantation, rearing density and depth, and time of harvest were identified. During the period from January 1991 to December 1998, the water temperature ranged from 4.7 to 21.4$^{\circ}C$ at 15-30 m depth and 4.9 to 25.7$^{\circ}C$ at the surface; these thermal ranges were within the optimal ranges (5-23$^{\circ}C$) prevailing at 15-30 m depth at surface water. Annual thermal changes indicated that the prevailing temperature during the years 1993 and 1996 was near optimum, but higher during the years 1994, 1997 and 1998, when mass mortality and growth retardation occurred. Salinity (32.0- 34.4$\textperthousand$) and dissolved oxygen (4.14 -8.11 $\mu\textrm{g}$/l) at 15 m depth were well within the optimum ranges. The chlorophyll concentrations (0.06 - 2.73$\mu\textrm{g}$/l) indicated that the study area was oligotrophic, although mass mortality did occur, when chlorophyll concentrations were high, especially in summer. Hence water temperatures and chlorophyll concentration are major factors related to survival and growth of the scallop. In terms of the shell height maximum growth occurred during spring (March-May; 8 - l3$^{\circ}C$) and fall (October-December; 11-l7$^{\circ}C$) in the lantern cage culture. Slow growth was recorded during late winter January-february; less than 7$^{\circ}C$) and mid-summer (August- September; more than 18$^{\circ}C$). Daily growth of shell height and total weight were 0.02∼0.24 mm and -0.07∼0.90 g at the rearing density of 12 individuals per net. Optimal .earing density in the lantern cage (ø50${\times}$20 cm) was 10∼15 individuals with the shell height of 5∼6 cm. The fastest growth rates were observed at 15∼20 m depth; however, it is recommended that 20∼30 m would be optimal. The scallops require 22 months to attain the commercial size of 10 cm shell height and 140 g total weigh, and are best harvested and sold during March-April.
