  • A method to determine elastic constants for transversely isotropic rock using a single uniaxial compression test was proposed by Kim(1995). However, some problems were found when this method was applied. We derived two different equations in determination of elastic constants using V$\sub$12/ and V$\sub$21/ and performed uniaxial compression tests for two specimens whose angles between transversely isotropic plane and horizontal plane are 30$^{\circ}C$ and 65$^{\circ}C$. The anisotropic elastic constants should be calculated with different equations depend on the angle. If the anisotropic angle is lower than 45$^{\circ}$, V$\sub$21/ may be used. However, if the anisotropic angle is higher than 45$^{\circ}$, V$\sub$12/ may be used.

  • In this paper the path independent $J_{k}$(k=1, 2) integrals are evaluated in a rectilinear anisotropic body for two dimensional case. The relationship among elastic constants are examined. Using those relationship the expression of $J_{2}$ Integral in terms of $K_{I}$ is found to be very simple.e.e.

  • Non-linear behavior of rock under compression can be predicted by a crack model. Crack growth in rock renders rock anisotropic. The degree of anisotropy is explained in terms of elastic moduli as a function of load level. In this study, we calculate the changes of elastic moduli due to crack growth numerically by using a crack model and compare these values with experimental results obtained from the measurement of ultrasonic wave velocities. Image processing technique is used to obtain the initial crack information needed for the numerical calculation of elastic moduli.

  • The aim of this paper is to present the modulus of elasticity of $E_L$, $E_R$, $E_T$ along three principal axis of softwood dimension lumber by nondestructive method. Ultrasonic measurement was carried out on defect free wood samples taken by the Japanese Larch, SPF (spruce-pine-fir) and Hem-fir $2{\times}4s$. The ultrasound velocities were measured to calculate young's moduli and it was derived elastic constants for each wood samples using the ultrasound velocities and densities of wood. From the test, $E_L$ was much greater than $E_R$ and $E_T$. $E_R/E_T$ ratios were about 1.3. The high density wood had high young's moduli in three principal axis and the difference in young's moduli between species was greater in transverse direction than longitudinal direction. The anisotropy of the lumber was presented through the calculated elastic moduli and compliances matrix in diagonal term were determined by inverting the stiffness matrix.

  • Anisotropic elastic constants of Zr-2.5Nb pressure tube materials were determined by a high temperature resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS). The resonant frequencies were measured using alumina wave-guides and wide band ultrasonic transducers in a small furnace. The rectangular parallelepiped specimens were fabricated along with the axial, radial and circumferential direction of the pressure tube. A nine elastic stiffness tensor for orthotropic symmetry was determined in the range of room temperature ${\sim}500^{\circ}C$. As the temperature increases, the elastic constant tensor, cij gradually decreases. Higher elastic constants along the transverse direction compared to those along the axial or radial direction are similar to the case of Young's modulus or shear modulus. A crossing of shear elastic constants along axial direction and radial direction was observed near $150^{\circ}C$. This fact corresponds to the crossing of c44 and c66 of single crystal zirconium.

  • Although conventional seismic data processing is based on the assumption that the media are isotropic, the subsurface is often anisotropy in shale formation or carbonate with cracks and fractures. This paper presents the anisotropic parameter and seismic modeling in transversely isotropic media with a vertical symmetry axis using seismic physical modeling. The experiment was successfully carried out with VTI media, laminated bakelite material, using contact transducer of p and s-wave transmission. The variation of velocities with angle of incidence was clearly shown in anisotropic material. Comparing these velocities with the calculated phase velocities, the (P) and (S)-wave velocity observed in anisotropic material was a very good agreement with the calculated values. Anisotropic parameter ${\varepsilon}$, ${\delta}$, ${\gamma}$ was estimated by using Lame's constant calculated from the observed velocity. For the purpose of testing (S)-wave polarization, a birefringence experiment was carried out. The higher velocity was associated with the polarization parallel to the fracture, and the lower velocity was associated with the polarization perpendicular to the fracture.

  • Seismic traveltime tomography technique was conducted at a site composed of black shale. It is well known that black shale has strong anisotropic property. Therefore, the anisotropic property of black shale has to be considered to obtain the appropriate subsurface velocity model by an inversion process. To estimate the anisotropic constant of the velocity of the black shale in the survey area, the relation between the velocity, which is calculated by the straight ray path and the first arrival time, and the angle of the ray propagation was examined. The elliptically shaped relation was found and it reveals that the black shale contains the anisotropic property of velocity. It was also noticed that the horizontal velocity is faster than the vertical velocity. When the estimated anisotropic constant was applied in the process of the velocity inversion for three sets of field data, we could obtain the appropriate velocity structures of the site that is consistent with the result of the geological survey.
