Residual fatigue life evaluation method for the cracked components under complex stress fields (복합응력장 하의 균열부재에 대한 잔류피로수명 평가방법)

  • This study reviews the influence function method(IFM) for calculating stress intensity factors (SIFs, K) and modifies it to apply for the estimating the residual fatigue life for the cracked components under complex stress fields. An IFM has been developed to analyze SIFs for surface cracks which are subjectedto nonuniformly distributed stresses. Through elastic superposition, the influence function method properly accounts for redistribution of stress as the crack grows through the component. This influence function is unique to the given geometry and independent of the loading. Some examples have been provided to show the effectiveness of the IFM including the distributions of K in a residual stress field. The significant effect of residual stress upon fatigue crack growth in a welded component has been demonstrated with the IFM.

  • Authors had developed the model for the fatigue life assessment of welded details considering residual stress and its relaxation. The model consists of three ingredients; a hot-spot stress approach, a residual stress relaxation, and an equivalent stress. The equivalent stress is induced by stress ranges and the ratios between the applied mean stresses and the ultimate stress of material. Once being tuned with two specific fatigue tests by using load carrying cruciform joint, this model can be applied to many kinds of welded details which structural stress concentration factors are different from each other. This paper reports the application of the proposed model for various welded details including cover plate, longitudinal stiffener, gusset and side attachment. From the investigation of predicted results by using the proposed model it was shown that the ambiguous fatigue characteristics of the various details influenced widely by the welding residual stress are clarified, and also the model could be applied to assess fatigue life of general welded structures.

  • In order to assess the stiffness of bearing screw used for lead screw, finite element analysis on stress and fatigue life of bearing screw has been performed. Based on these analysis, fatigue life dominant model of bearing screw was proposed. This improved model introduces a fillet to release the concentrated stress generated in the vicinity of bearing screw hole. This paper also considered the strength suitability when the bearing screw manufactured in W company was applied to X-ray CT.

  • The estimation of fatigue life at the design stage is very important in order to arrive at feasible and cost effective solutions considering the total lifetime of the structure and machinery compo-nents. In this study the practical procedure of prediction of fatigue life by use of cumulative damage factors based on Miner-Palmgren hypothesis and probability density function is shown with a $135,000m^3$ LNG tank being used as an example. In particular the parameters of Weibull distribution taht determine the stress spectrum are dis-cussed. At the end some of uncertainties associated with fatigue life prediction are discussed. The main results obtained from this study are as follows: 1. The practical procedure of prediction of fatigue life by use of cumulative damage factors expressed in combination of probability density function and S-N data is proposed. 2. The calculated fatigue life is influenced by the shape parameter and stress block. The conser-vative fatigue design can be achieved when using higher value of shape parameter and the stress blocks divded into more stress blocks.

An Evaluation on Corrosion Fatigue life of Spring Steel by Compressive Residual Stress (압축잔류응력을 부여한 스프링강의 부식피로 수명평가)

  • In this study, the influence of compressive residual stress and corrosive condition for corrosion fatigue crack was investigated, after immersing in 3.5%NaCl, $10%HNO_3+3%HF,\;6%FeCl_3$. The immersion period was performed for 90days. The fatigue characterization of a spring steel with processed shot peening were performed by considering the several corrosion environments in the range of stress ratio of 0.05 by means of opening mode displacement. By using the methods mentioned above, the following conclusions have been drawn: The fatigue life shows more improvement in the shot peened material than that in the un peened material. And the fatigue life shows improvement in ambient than in corrosion conditions. Threshold stress intensity factor range of the shot peened materials has higher than of the un peened materials. And the threshold stress intensity factor range was decreased in corrosion environments over ambient.

  • In order to estimate the fatigue life of mufflers at the early stage of researches and designs, the new prediction process was developed by the artificial neural network, which has the algorism of weldment properties. Bending fatigue test was carried out for defining the characteristics of muffler weldment fatigue life and damage. For considering and predicting mechanical and fatigue properties of the muffler, the maximum stress of weldment was adapted as the variable of artificial neural network training. Also, it was compared with the fatigue life predicting results using fatigue notch factors, for proving the newly developed process of the artificial neural network.

  • 원자로 압력용기 및 주 배관등 원자력발전소 주요부품 구조재료에서의 파괴저항성 및 건전성 문제를 일부 시험결과 및 평가결과와 함께 살펴보았다. 원자력환경하에서는 중성자 조사에 의한 조사취화 및 고온에서의 장기간 유지에 따른 열취ㅘ로 재료 고유의 파괴저항치가 가동에 따라 매우 감소하고, 이에 따라 부품의 건전성 및 수명이 매우 위협받고 있음을 확인하였다. 현재 가동중인 원자로 10기, 건설중인 8기, 합계 18기로 세계 9위의 원자력발전국이 되며, 대북 경수로 지원과 세계시장 진출을 계획하고 있는 우리나라에서는, 보다 안전한 원자력발전소가 건설되기 위해서, 재료의 균질성 및 파괴인성 개선연구, 조사특성 연구 등을 통해 파괴저항성이 우수한 국산소재를 제작\ulcorner공급하도록 하여야 한다. 또한, 수명기간 동안 고도의 건전성을 유지하면서 운전하고, 나아가 수명연장 운전을 위해서는, 용기 등 주요 부품의 상태(파괴인성치, 결함, 작용 응력)를 정확히 진단, 예측, 평가하여야 하고, 이들이 건전성에 미치는 영향평가와 건전성평가기술 확립을 통한 수명예측기술을 확보하여야 한다(이들은 대부분 파괴역학 시험 침 해석기술에 바 탕을 두고 있다). 국내 산\ulcorner학\ulcorner연 관련자들의 특별한 관심을 촉구하는 바이다.
