  • A sophisticated finite element model is illustrated to analyze the behavior of Prefabricated Parallel Wire Strand(PPWS) sockets for main cables of suspension bridges. An orthotropic model is proposed for the casting material by considering both effects of individual wires and a casting alloy, and the contact between surfaces of a socket and a casting alloy is idealized by using the Coulomb friction and the surface-based contact model. The proposed FE model is verified by comparing the strain distributions obtained from the tensile test and FE analysis. The mechanical behavior of a socket is investigated with respect to the variation of the frictional coefficient. The result shows that the friction between surfaces significantly diminishes the stress concentration of a socket and a casting alloy, and the normal stress from the design equation represents the averaged value of the upper and lower quartiles in the distribution of contact stresses between a socket and a casting alloy.

  • The tire inflation and contact problem has been solved by a finite element method. The finite element formulation is derived from the equilibrium equations by the principle of virtual work in the form of an updated Lagrangian formulation for incremental analysis. Then, a contact formulation is added to the finite element formulation to calculate stress state of tire in contact with flat rigid road under the load due to the self-weight of a vehicle. In the finite element analysis, equations of effective material properties are introduced to analyze a plane strain model of the shell-like tire by considering the bending effect of reinforced steel cords. The proposed equations of effective material properties produced stress concentration around the edge of belt layers, which does not appear when other well-known equations of material properties are adopted. The result from the above algorithm demonstrates the validity of the formulation and the proposed equations for the effective elastic constants. The result fully interprets the cause of separation between belt layers by showing the stress concentration.

  • An approach using complex potentials is presented for analysis of composite plate with an elliptical hole or a rectilinear crack. Composite structure is susceptible to encounter impact damages, which lead to considerable decrease in its residual strength. Such impact damages could be modeled as an equivalent elliptical hole or notch-like crack. Even though finite element method is widely used to analyze stresses or fracture mechanics parameters around such damage, it is tedious to make successive FE-modeling for damage tolerance assessment under fatigue loadings. In this point of view, the solutions based on complex potentials are very simple and easy to use. The computed results are also compared and discussed with those from FEA.

  • Interfacial shear strength between epoxy and carbon fiber was analyzed utilizing a hemi-spherical microbond specimens adhered onto single carbon fiber. The hemi-spherical microbond specimen showed high regression coefficient and small standard deviation in the measurement of interfacial strength as compared with a droplet and an inverse hemi-spherical one. This seemed to be caused by the reduced meniscus effects and the reduced stress concentration In the region contacting with a pin-hole loading device. Finite element analysis showed that the stress distributions along the fiber/matrix interface in the hemi-spherical specimen had a stable shear stress distribution along the interface without any stress mode change. The experimental data was also different according to the kinds of loading device such as the microvise-tip and the pin-holed plate.

  • Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.

  • In this study, finite element analysis was performed to evaluate a method of increasing the fatigue life of the pipe connection structure commonly used in the topside structure of offshore platforms. MSC Patran/Nastran, a commercial analysis program, was used, and the critical structural model was selected from the global analysis. To realize the stress concentration phenomenon according to the load, modeling using 8-node solid elements was implemented. The main loads were considered to be two lateral loads and a tensile load on a diagonal pipe. To check the hotspot stress at the main location, a 0.01 mm dummy shell element was applied. After calculating the main stress at the 0.5-t and 1.5-t locations, the stress generated in the weld was estimated through extrapolation. In some sections, this stress was observed to be below the fatigue life that should be satisfied, and reinforcement was required. For reinforcement, a bracket was added to reduce the stress concentration factor where the fatigue life was insufficient without changing the thickness or diameter of the previously designed pipe. Regarding the tensile load, the stress in the bracket toe increased by 23 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was a problem, decreased by approximately 8 %. Regarding the flexural load, the stress at the bracket toe increased by 3 %, whereas the stress inside and outside of the pipe, which was also a problem, decreased by approximately 48 %. Owing to the new bracket reinforcement, the stress in the bracket toe increased, but the S-N curve itself was better than that of the pipe joint, so it was not a significant problem. The improvement method of fatigue life is expected to be useful; it can efficiently increase the fatigue life while minimizing changes to the initial design.

  • The damage and fracture of machine or structure are caused by the crack happened from the defect existed at the inside of material. The properties of crack propagation and growth characteristic must be considered because there are many cases at which these cracks are densely existed. Therefore, this study investigates the fracture property due to the position of crack and hole inside the standard compact tension (C. T.) specimen. When the concentrated load is applied eccentrically at the standard C. T. specimen, the fracture mechanical behavior due to the existence or non-existence and the position of hole near crack is investigated. As the result of analysis study, model 3 (in case of the distance of 2mm on the horizontal direction between the end part and hole as the specimen model existed with one hole near the crack) has the maximum deformation, stress and deformation energy of the most values among three models. As the distance between the crack and hole inside the specimen becomes nearer, the maximum stress becomes higher in cases of three models. Apart from the number of holes, it is seen that the maximum stress becomes higher near the crack when the hole exists near the crack inside the specimen. If the hole inside the machine or the mechanical structure is punctured by using the result of this study, it is thought that the occurred breakage or breakdown can be prevented by reducing the fracture stress happened at the specimen.

  • Unlike NATM tunnels, Shield TBM tunnels have split linings. Therefore, the stress distribution of the lining is different even if the lining is under the same load. Representative methods for analyzing the stress generated in lining in Shield TBM tunnels include Non-joint Mode that does not consider connections and a 2-ring beam-spring model that considers ring-to-ring joints and segment connections. This study is an analysis method by Break-joint Mode. However, we do not consider the structural role of segment lining connections. The effectiveness of the modeling is verified by analyzing behavioral characteristics against vibration loads by modeling with segment connection interfaces to which vertical stiffness and shear stiffness, which are friction components, are applied. Unlike the Non-joint mode, where the greatest stress occurs on the crown for static loads such as earth pressure, the stress distribution caused by contact between segment lining and friction stiffness produced the smallest stress in the crown key segment where segment connections were concentrated. The stress distribution was clearly distinguished based on segment connections. The results of static analysis by earth pressure, etc., produced up to seven times the stress generated in Non-joint mode compared to the stress generated by Break-joint Mode. This result is consistent with the stress distribution pattern of the 2-ring beam-spring model. However, as for the stress value for the train vibration load, the stress of Break-joint Mode was greater than that of Non-joint mode. This is a different result from the static mechanics concept that a segment ring consisting of a combination of short members is integrated in the circumferential direction, resulting in a smaller stress than Non-joint mode with a relatively longer member length.

  • The objective of this paper is to evaluate the flexural tensile strength of unreinforced concrete masonry wall to ensure the structural safety in out-of-plane behaviors under the wind or earthquake loads. Flexural tensile strength of unreinforced concrete masonry wall has been obtained from the full scale tests of total 327 specimens and the statistical analysis are performed for each of the cases. The flexural tensile strength derived from experiments is classified as 13 groups according to masorny units, mortar ingredients, and the direction of tensile stresses and the mean tensile strength and the variable coefficient are obtained for each case. The uniform and concentrated transverse loads have been applied over the face of the wall specimens. The ultimate mean flexural tensile strengths are distributed from 1,564 kPa to 363 kPa according to masonry units, mortar ingredients, and other factors. The allowable flexural tension stress criteria will be established based on the mean flexural tensile strengths in the future.
