  • We estimated the spectrum decay parameter $\chi$ and the stress parameter ($\Delta$$\sigma$) in southeastern Korea. Especially, we propose a procedure to compute site-independent $\chi$$_{q}$ and dependent $\chi$$_{s}$ values, separately, This procedure is to use the coda normalization method for the computation of site independent Q or corresponding $\chi$$_{q}$ value as the first step followed by the next step, the computation of $\chi$$_{s}$ values for each site using the given $\chi$$_{q}$ value evaluated at the first step, For the estimation of stress parameter, we used seismic data monitored from three earthquakes occurred near Gyeongju in 1999 with the method of Jo and Baag, In addition, we simulated strong ground motion using the $\chi$ value and the stress parameter, In this case, we calculated the $\chi$ value with conventional method. The $\chi$ value of 0.016+0.000157R and the stress parameter of 92-bar was applied to the stochastic simulation, At last, we derived seismic attenuation equation using results of the stochastic prediction, and compared these results with some others reported previously.ported previously.

  • Source parameters for forty four earthquakes which occurred in and around the Korean Peninsula were determined and the relations between them were studied. Snoke's method (Snoke, 1987) was applied in determining the corner frequencies and seismic moments. In general, the source parameters estimated at different stations for an earthquake show different values. These disagreements have been interpreted as originating, in principle, from an inadequate consideration of the source radiation pattern and direction dependent attenuation and amplification. The comer frequencies and seismic moments were averaged to exclude the such directional effects. Other source parameters were estimated from the mean corner frequency and seismic moment. The static stress drops, determined in this study, tend to be independent of seismic moment for events greater than a specific magnitude. For earthquakes with a size less than about $1.0{\times}10^{22}$ dyne-cm (nearly same as $M_L = 4.0$), the stress drop tends to decrease with the decreasing moment. This fact suggests a breakdown of the scaling law of source parameters in earthquakes below the threshold magnitude.

  • In order to estimate peak ground motions and frequency characteristics of strong ground motions in southern korea, we employed the stochastic simulation method with the moment magnitude(M$_{w}$) and the hypocentral distance(R). We estimated same input parameters that account for specific properties of source and propagation processes, and applied them to the stochastic simulation method. The stress drop($\Delta$$\sigma$) of 100-bar was estimated considering results of research in ENA, China, and southern korea. The attenuation parameter x was calculated by analyzing 57 seismograms recorded from September 1996 to October 1997 and the estimation result of the attenuation parameter x is 0.00112+0.000224 R where R is hypocenter distance. We estimated strong ground motion relations using the stochastic simulation method with suitable input parameters(e.g. $\Delta$$\sigma$, x, and so on). At last, we derived relations between hypocentral distances and ground motions(seismic attenuation equation) using results of the stochastic prediction.esults of the stochastic prediction.n.

  • On December 13, 1996, an earthquake with local magnitude (M$_L$) 4.5 occurred in the Yeongwol area of South Korea. The epicenter was 37.2545$^{\circ}$N and 128.7277$^{\circ}$E, which is located inside the Okcheon Fold Belt. The waveform inversion analysis was carried out to estimate source parameters of the event according to the filtering bandwidth of seismic data. Using 0.02$\sim$0.2 Hz filtering bandwidth, focal depth and seismic moment were estimated to be 6 km and 1.3$\times$10$^{16}$ N$\cdot$m, respectively. This seismic moment corresponds to the moment magnitude (M$_W$) 4.7. The focal mechanism by the waveform inversion and P wave first motion polarity analysis is a strike slip faulting including a small thrust component, and the direction of P-axis is ENE-WSW. The moment magnitude estimated by spectral analysis was 4.8, which is similar to that estimated by waveform inversion. Average stress drop was estimated to be 14.3 MPa.

  • An earthquake with local magnitude $(M_L)$ 3.7 on December 9, 2000 occurred offshore Yeongdeok area, South Korea. In case of applying Chang and Baag (2006) crustal velocity model, the epicenter is $36.4462^{\circ}N\;and\;129.9789^{\circ}E$, which belongs to the inside of the Korean Peninsula Continental Shelf. Although we use the modified model reducing crustal thickness of Chang and Baag (2006) model by 5 km considering the transition from continental crust to oceanic crust in the East Sea, the epicenter was little changed. We carried out the waveform inversion analysis to estimate focal depth and focal mechanism of this event. The focal depth is estimated to be 11 ~ 12 km. The seismic moment is estimated to be $1.0{\times}10^{15}N{\cdot}m$, and this value corresponds to the moment magnitude $(M_W)$ 3.9. The offshore Yeongdeok event including May 29, 2004 offshore Uljin one show typical thrust faulting, and the direction of P-axis is ESE-WNW. The moment magnitude estimated by the spectral analysis is 4.0, which is similar to that by the waveform inversion analysis. Average stress drop is estimated to be 3.4 MPa.
