  • An experiment to acoustically analyze the shape of gill-net in the current was conducted in Jaran Bay, Gosung, Korea on the 9th to 10th September(spring tide) and 28th to 29th September(neap tide) 2006. It was measured by a 3D underwater positioning system with a radio-acoustic linked positioning buoys. Six of 7 acoustic transmitters used in the experiment were attached on the float line of the gill-net and the other was fixed on the sea bed. During spring tide, the maximum movement of the gill-net was 27.0m(22:00) in the west(4.4cm/s, $311.9^{\circ}$) and 20.6m(04:00) in the east(3.9cm/s, $66.5^{\circ}$). The maximum extension of the gill-net(the distance between P1 and P6) was 119.8m(21:00, 11.6cm/s, $321.9^{\circ}$) and the minimum was 109.9m(23:00, 16.1cm/s, $88.5^{\circ}$). During neap tide, the maximum movement was 38.0m(20:00) in the east(9.6cm/s, $278.2^{\circ}$) and 11.0m(12:00) in the west(1.9cm/s, $232.1^{\circ}$). The maximum extension was 99.6m(14:00, 12.5cm/s, $94.7^{\circ}$) and the minimum was 85.0m(06:00, 9.0cm/s, $265.8^{\circ}$). During spring tide, the maximum height of the gill-net from the sea bed was 3.7m(02:00, 7.4cm/s, $151.6^{\circ}$) and the minimum was produced the three times as 1.5m. At that time, the current speed and direction was 17.9cm/s and $85.3^{\circ}$(23:30), 16.1cm/s and $249.4^{\circ}$(05:00), and 13.7cm/s and $291.4^{\circ}$(06:30), respectively. During neap tide, the maximum height was 3.6m(12:30, 2.1cm/s, $242.3^{\circ}$) and the minimum was 1.5m(14:00, 12.5cm/s, $94.7^{\circ}$).

이용한 해마의 부피측정은 해마경화증 환자의 진단에 있어 육안적인 MR 진단이 어려운 제한된 경우에만 실제적 도움을 줄 수 있는 보조적인 방법으로 생각된다.ofile whereas relaxivity at high field is not affected by τS. • AVO and complex trace analyses mainly used to characterize natural gas reservoir were tested in this paper for a possible application to detection of major geological discontinuities such as fracture zones. The test data used in this study were calculated by utilizing a viscoelastic numerical program which was based on the generalized Maxwell body for a horizontal fracture model. In AVO analysis of a horizontal fracture zone, p-wave reflection appears to be variant depending upon the acoustic-impedence contrast and the offset distance. The fracture zone is also effectively clarified both in gradient stack and range-limited stack in which fracture zone reflection is attenuated with the increasing offset distance. In complex attribute plots (instantaneous amplitude, frequency, and phase), the top and bottom of the fracture Tone are characterized by a zone of strong amplitudes and an event of the same phase. Low frequency characteristics appear at the fracture zone and the underneath. Amplitude attenuation and waveform dispersion are dependent on Q-contrast between the fracture zone and the surrounding media. They were properly compensated by optimum inverse Q-filtering.

  • Despite the various opening models of the southwestern part of the East Sea (Japan Sea) between the Korean Peninsula and the Japan Arc, the continental margin of the Korean Peninsula remains unknown in crustal structure. As a result, continental rifting and subsequent seafloor spreading processes to explain the opening of the East Sea have not been adequately addressed. We investigated crustal and sedimentary velocity structures across the Korean margin into the adjacent Ulleung Basin from multichannel seismic reflection and ocean bottom seismometer data. The Ulleung Basin shows crustal velocity structure typical of oceanic although its crustal thickness of about 10 km is greater than normal. The continental margin documents rapid transition from continental to oceanic crust, exhibiting a remarkable decrease in crustal thickness accompanied by shallowing of Moho over a distance of about 50 km. The crustal model of the margin is characterized by a high-velocity (up to 7.4 km/s) lower crustal (HVLC) layer that is thicker than 10 km under the slope base and pinches out seawards. The HVLC layer is interpreted as magmatic underplating emplaced during continental rifting In response to high upper mantle temperature. The acoustic basement of the slope base shows an igneous stratigraphy developed by massive volcanic eruption. These features suggest that the evolution of the Korean margin can be explained by the processes occurring at volcanic rifted margins. Global earthquake tomography supports our interpretation by defining the abnormally hot upper mantle across the Korean margin and in the Ulleung Basin.

  • Curved squeal noise may result when railway vehicles run on curved tracks. Contact between the wheels and the rails causes a stick-slip phenomenon, which generates squeal noise. In order to identify the mechanism of the squeal noise systematically, a scaled test rig has been fabricated. Knowledge of the contact forces between the wheels and the rail rollers is essential for investigating the squeal noise characteristics; however, it is difficult to measure there contact force. In this study, contact forces have been calculated indirectly according to the modal behavior of the subframe that supports the rail roller and the responses at specific positions of that subframe. In order to verify the estimated contact forces, the displacements at the contact points between the wheels and rail rollers have been calculated from the estimated forces; the resulting values have been compared with the measured displacement values. The SPL at the specific location has been calculated using the estimated contact forces and this also has been compared with the SPL, measured in a semi-anechoic chamber. The comparisons in displacements and SPLs show good correlation.

  • A shallow high-resolution seismic reflection survey was carried out at the Mineopo tidal flat on the western coast of Korea. The purpose of the survey was to investigate shallow sedimentary structure of the tidal (fat associated with the recent sea level change. A total of 795 shots were generated at 1 m interval from a 5-kg hammer source and recorded on 48 channels of 100 Hz geophones along two mutually perpendicular profiles. The water-saturated ground condition resulted in suppressed ground rolls by significantly decreasing rigidity. In addition, seismic velocities over 1500 m/s provided easy segregation of reflected arrivals from lower velocity noise. As a consequence, seismic sections were created that are high in resolution and signal to noise ratio as well. The stack sections show that the tidal flat consists of 5 sedimentary sequences above acoustic basement. Although deposition is largely characterized by the transgressive sedimentary facies resulting from sea level rise, erosional surfaces are well-resolved within the sequences.

  • Analysis of multi-channel seismic reflection profiles collected from the Ulleung Basin reveals that the Quaternary sequence consists of four stratigraphic units separated by erosional unconformities. Individual stratigraphic unit includes eighteen mass transport deposits which are variable in geometric characteristics and spatial distribution. Each mass transport deposit on the seismic profile is acoustically characterized by chaotic or transparent seismic facies, and shows wedge or lens-shaped external geometry. The mass transport deposits, which comprise a succession of stacked wedges, mainly occur on the southern slope, and their thickness gradually decreases toward the basin plain. The time structure map of erosional unconformities shows that a tectonic-induced structural high and troughs toward the northwest and northeast are developed at the central part of the basin. Based on the isochron map, the mass transport deposits, originated from southern part of the study area, transported to the basin plain and can be divided into two groups by the structural high. Consequently, the mass transport deposits within the Quaternary sequence in the Ulleung Basin are largely controlled by the large amounts of sediment supply, dissociation of gas hydrate during the lowstands, and central structural high.

  • Multi-beam echosounder data and grain size analysis data of surface sediment were acquired and analyzed in order to investigate the shelf-to-slope morphology, geological character, and their geological controlling factors in the southwestern margin of the Ulleung Basin. According to the morphological character, the continental shelf can be divided into two parts: (1) shallow (~100 m) and steep ($0.5^{\circ}$) inner shelf, (2) deep (100-300 m) and gentle ($0.2^{\circ}$) outer shelf. The continental slope is featured with eight distinct topographic depressions of various spatial dimension (~121 $km^2$ in area) and head wall gradient (${\sim}24.3^{\circ}$). They are developed adjacent to each other and presumably formed by submarine landslides which have recurred under the strong influences of earthquakes and eustatic sea-level change. The inner continental shelf and the continental slope are dominated by fine-grained sediment, whereas the outer continental shelf is dominated by coarse-grained sediment. The surface sediment distribution seems dominantly influenced by eustatic sea-level change. The outer continental shelf is mostly covered by coarse relict sediment deposited during lowstand sea-level, while the inner shelf is covered with recent sediment during highstand sea-level. The surface of the continental slope is covered with fine-grained sediments which were supplied by hemipelagic advection process.

  • The aim of this study is to develop the methodology which enables to identify the mechanical properties of element such as stress intensity factor by using the AE parameters. Considering the multivariate and nonlinear properties of AE parameters such as ringdown count, rise time, energy, event duration and peak amplitude from fatigue cracks of machine element the principal component regression(PCR) and artificial neural network(ANN) models for the estimation of stress intensity factor were developed and validated. The AE parameters were found to be very significant to estimate the stress intensity factor. Since the statistical values including correlation coefficients, standard mr of calibration, standard error of prediction and bias were stable, the PCR and ANN models for stress intensity factor were very robust. The performance of ANN model for unknown data of stress intensity factor was better than that of PCR model.

  • A high intensity focuses ultrasound (HIFU) is one of the emerging technologies in the biomedical field. The piezoelectric HIFU transducer is a device that utilizes the thermal energy generated by high ultrasound energy. Recently an operating frequency of the HIFU transducer is to expand above a 7 MHz. In this study, the acoustic pressures and temperature distributions in the tissue that generated by the HIFU transducer at 10 MHz were calculated with the finite element method. In addition, the pressure focusing characteristics of the device were analyzed. The geometrical variables are the piezomaterial thickness, lens shape, water height, and film thickness. The results shown that the acoustic pressure increased and saturated gradually when the height/radius (HL/RL) ratio of the lens increased. Moreover, the focal area was gradually decreases with HL/RL ratio of the lens. In case of the optimized HIFU transducer, the maximum pressure and temperature were analyzed about 19 MPa and 65℃ respectively. And the -3 dB focused distances in the axial and lateral direction are around 2.3 mm and 0.23 mm respectively.
