This study investigates acoustic emission (AE) and micro-deformation characteristics of circular openings through biaxial compression experiments. The experimental results showed a significant increase in the frequency, count, energy, and amplitude of AE signals immediately before damage occurred in the circular opening. The differences in frequency and count between before and after damage initiation were significantly pronounced, indicating suitable factors for identifying damage occurrence in circular openings. The results for digital image correlation (DIC) technique revealed that micro-deformation was concentrated around the openings, as evidenced by the spatial distribution of strain. In addition, spalling was observed at the end of the experiments. The AE and micro-deformation characteristics presented in this study are expected to serve as fundamental data for evaluating the stability of underground openings and boreholes for deep subsurface projects.

When a ship propeller having wing type sections rotates at high speed underwater, local pressure on the blade decreases and various types of the cavitation inevitably occur where the local pressure falls below the vapor pressure. Fundamentally characteristics of the cavitation are determined by the shapes of the blade section and their operating conditions. Underwater noise radiated from a ship propeller is directly connected to the occurrence of the cavitation. In order to design low noise propeller, it is preferentially demanded to figure out key features: how the cavity is generated, developed and collapsed and how the effect of viscosity works in the process. In this study, we first perform inviscid analysis of the partial cavity generated on two dimensional hydrofoil. Secondly, viscous analysis using FLUENT with different turbulence and cavitation models are presented. Results from both approaches are also compared and estimated.
The paper looked into the effects of the spectral properties (waveform) of the high intensity focused ultrasound on suppression of the ultrasonic cavitation. Three different types of ultrasound were considered in the study, which were sinusoidal (1 MHz, 5 MPa), frequency modulated (from 1 MHz to 6 MHz for 10 ㎲, 5 MPa), asymmetrically shocked (fundamental frequency 1 MHz, peak positive pressure 12 MPa, peak negative pressure -4 MPa). The temporal response of an air bubble in water initially 1 ㎛ in radius to each type of the ultrasound was predicted using Gilmore bubble dynamic model and Church's rectified gas diffusion equation. It was shown that the radially pulsating amplitude of the bubble was greatly reduced for the frequency modulated wave and was little decreased for the shock wave, compared to the case that the bubble was exposed to the sinusoidal wave. It is interesting that the bubble response to the frequency modulated wave remains similar when the frequency component of the modulated ultrasound is beyond the bubble resonant frequency 3 MHz. This implies that, although the ultrasound is modulated up to 3MHz rather than up to the present 6 MHz, it is likely to produce similar cavitation suppression effects. In practice, it means that a typical narrow band ultrasonic transducer can be taken to generate an appropriate frequency modulated ultrasound to reduce cavitation activity. The present study indicates that ultrasonic cavitation may be suppressed to some extent by a proper spectral modification of high intensity ultrasound.

This paper is a study on the generation mechanism of propeller singing based on the cavitation tunnel test, underwater impact test, finite element analysis and computational flow analysis for the model propeller. A wire screen mesh, a propeller and a rudder were installed to simulate ship stern flow, and occurrence and disappearance of propeller singing phenomenon were measured by hydrophone and accelerometer. The natural frequencies of propeller blades were predicted through finite element analysis and verified by contact and non-contact impact tests. The flow velocity and effective angle of attack for each section of the propeller blades were calculated using RANS (Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equation-based computational fluid analysis. Using the high resolution analysis based on detached eddy simulation, the vortex shedding frequency calculation was performed. The numerical predicted vortex shedding frequency was confirmed to be consistent with the singing frequency and blade natural frequency measured by the model test.

Because the cavitation flow driven by an underwater propeller corrodes the materials around it and generates a high level of noise, it has become an important topic in engineering research. In this study, computational fluid dynamics techniques are applied to simulate cavitation flow, and the noise in the flow is predicted by applying the acoustic analogy to the predicted flow. The predicted results are compared with measurement results and other predictions in terms of surface pressure distribution and the temporal variation in liquid volume fraction. The predicted results are found to be in good agreement with the measured results. The source of the noise attributed to the time rate of change in the liquid volume fraction around the hydrofoil is modeled as a monopole source, and the source of the noise due to unsteady pressure perturbations on the hydrofoil surface is modeled as a dipole source. Then the predicted noise results are analyzed in terms of directivity and SPL spectrum. The noise caused by unsteady pressure perturbations was dominant in the entire frequency range considered in the study.

A Possibility of combustion instability on longitudinal mode has a high level at large scale of L/D. Solid propellant has a metal particle and a grain of control to pressure oscillation. Solid rocket motor in slotted-tube grain controls pressure oscillation of longitudinal mode. Slotted-tube grain restrains longitudinal 1st pressure oscillation. But cavity volume of aft. insulation ablation amplifies 2nd pressure o scillation by vortext shedding. A study has suppressed combustion instability and vortex shedding by modified 4 slotted tube solid rocket motor design.
Most people acquire information visually. Screens of computers, smart phones, etc. constantly stimulate people's eyes, increasing fatigue. In this social phenomenon, the realistic and rich sound of the 21st century's state-of-art sound system can affect people's bodies and minds in various ways. Through sound, human beings are given space to calm and observe themselves. The purpose of this paper is to introduce immersive yoga training based on 3D sound conducted together by ALgruppe & Rory's PranaLab and to promote the understanding of immersive audio system. As a result, people, experienced immersive yoga, not only enjoy the effect of sound, but also receive a powerful energy that gives them a sense of inner self-awareness. This is a response to multidisciplinary exchange required by the knowledge of modern society, and at the same time, informs the possibility of new cultural contents.
To study the water-entry impact noise, on-board experiment using a small launcher firing various objects was performed in the Yellow Sea. As the launcher fires a cylindrical object from the ship vertically, generated noise is measured with a hydrophone on the starboard of Chung-hae, Marine surveyor. Three types of cylindrical objects, which have noses of flat-faced, conical, and hemisphere, were used during the experiment. The measured noise exhibits a time-dependency which can be divided into three phases: (1) initial impact phase, (2) open cavity flow phase, (3) cavity collapse and bubble oscillation phase. In most cases, the waveform of bubble oscillation phase is dominant rather than that of initial impact phase. Pinch-off time, where a cavity begins to collapse, occurs at 0.18 ~ 0.2 second and the average lasting time of bubble was 0.9 ~ 1.3 second. The energy of water-entry impact noise is focused in the frequency region lower than 100 Hz, and the generated noise is influenced by the nose shapes, object mass, and launching velocity. As a result, energy spectral density on the bubble frequency is higher in the order of flat-faced, conical, hemisphere nose, and the increase of initial energy raises the energy spectral density on the bubble frequency in the cylinder body of same shape. Finally, we compare the measurements with the simulated signals and spectrum based on the bubble explosion physics, and obtain satisfactory agreements between them.
Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) is the brain protecting system blocking the inflow of harmful substances into brain parenchyma from brain blood vessel. However, the BBB has a negative effect on the treatment of various brain diseases such as Alzheimer's dementia or brain tumors because it also prevents drug delivery into brain parenchyma. To overcome this problem, a brain drug delivery technique using Focused Ultrasound (FUS) which allows BBB to be temporarily opened by inducing the acoustic cavitation effect of microbubbles has been developed. Thus far, various studies using the FUS technique has been conducted to improve drug delivery efficiency, and therefore, this paper discusses recently developed drug delivery technologies using the FUS-induced BBB opening.
