The spray and acoustic characteristics of a swirl coaxial injector are studied experimentally. The spray and acoustic characteristics of a swirl coaxial injector are investigated according to the injection conditions, such as the pressure drop of the liquid and gas phase, and injector geometries, such as recess length and gap size between the inner and outer injector.
In this paper, a new vocal cords model, called a four-mass model, is proposed for a hoarse speech mechanism. Pathological changes of vocal cords cause hoarse speech and glottal waveform reflects motion states of vocal cords. From these facts, we assumed that the morbid vocal cords be dissymmetric and take the four-mass type. The glottal waveforms and the model parameters of normal and hoarse speech signals are analyzed, and some relations bet ween the model parameters and the hoarse pathology are discussed. Experimental results show that the new research method of hoarse speech can reveal relations between the acoustic features of hoarse speech and the hoarse pathology, and be used to diagnose laryngeal diseases and to improve tone quality of hoarse speech.

We introduce a statistical scheme to classify seabed from acoustic profiling data acquired using Chirp sonar system. The classification is based on grouping of signal traces by similarity index, which is computed using the K-L (Karhunen-Lo$\grave{e}$ve) transform of the Chirp profiling data. The similarity index represents the degree of coherence of bottom-reflected signals in consecutive traces, hence indicating the acoustic roughness of the seabed. The results of this study show that similarity index is a function of homogeneity, grain size of sediments and bottom hardness. The similarity index ranges from 0 to 1 for various types of seabed material. It increases in accordance with the homogeneity and softness of bottom sediments, whereas it is inversely proportional to the grain size of sediments. As a real data example, we classified the seabed off Cheju Island, Korea based on the similarity index and compared the result with side-scan sonar data and sediment samples. The comparison shows that the classification of seabed by the similarity index is in good agreement with the real sedimentary facies and can delineate acoustic response of the seabed in more detail. Therefore, this study presents an effective method for geoacoustic modeling to classify the seafloor directly from acoustic data.
This study investigated the acoustic characteristics of sustained vowel /a/ and sentence utterance produced by patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) using cepstrum-based acoustic variables. 36 women diagnosed with MTD and the same number of women with normal voice participated in the study and the data were recorded and measured by ADSVTM. The results demonstrated that cepstral peak prominence (CPP) and CPP_F0 among all of the variables were statistically significantly lower than those of control group. When it comes to the GRBAS scale, overall severity (G) was most prominent, and roughness (R), breathiness (B), and strain (S) indices followed in order in the voice quality of MTD patients. As these characteristics increased, a statistically significant negative correlation was observed in CPP. We tried to classify MTD and control group using CPP and CPP_F0 variables. As a result of statistic modeling with a Random Forest machine learning algorithm, much higher classification accuracy (100% in training data and 83.3% in test data) was found in the sentence reading task, with CPP being proved to be playing a more crucial role in both vowel and sentence reading tasks.

Acoustic cavity as a stabilization device to control high-frequency combustion instabilities in liquid rocket engine is adopted and its damping capacity is verified in atmospheric temperature. First, harmful resonant frequency in a modeling chamber can be damped effectively by the installation of properly-tuned acoustic cavity. Besides, geometric effects of acoustic cavity on damping characteristics are analyzed and compared quantitatively. Satisfactory agreements have been achieved with linear acoustic analysis and experimental approach. Results show that the acoustic cavity of the largest orifice area or the shortest orifice length was the most effective in acoustic damping of the harmful resonant frequency. Finally, it is proved that an optimal design process is indispensable for the effective control of combustion instabilities.
This study aimed to compare the acoustic measurements of speech samples recorded from individuals with normal voices using various devices: the Computerized Speech Lab (CSL), a unidirectional wired pin-microphone (WIRED) suitable for smartphones, the built-in omnidirectional microphone (SMART) of smartphones, and Bluetooth-connected wireless earphones, specifically the Galaxy Buds2 Pro (WIRELESS). This study included 40 normal adults (12 males and 28 females) who had not visited an otolaryngologist for respiratory diseases within the past three months. Participants performed sustained vowel /a/ phonation for four seconds and reading tasks with sentences ("Walk") and paragraphs ("Autumn") in a sound-treated booth. Recordings were simultaneously conducted using the four different devices and synchronized based on the CSL-recorded samples for analysis using the MDVP, ADSV, and VOXplot programs. Compared with CSL, the Cepstral Spectral Index of Dysphonia (CSIDV, CSIDS) and Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) values were lower in the WIRED and higher in the SMART. The opposite trend was observed for the L/H spectral ratios (SRV and SRS), and the WIRELESS demonstrated task-specific discrepancies. Furthermore, both the fundamental frequency (F0) and the cepstral peak prominence of the vowel samples (CPPV) had intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values above 0.9, indicating high reliability. These variables, F0 and CPPV were considered highly reliable for voice recordings across different microphone types. However, caution should be exercised when analyzing and interpreting variables such as the SR, CSID, and AVQI, which may be influenced by the type of microphone used.
The purpose of this study was to investigate laryngeal characteristics in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). A total of 50 children participated, including eight children aged 2 to 4 years old diagnosed with ASD and 42 normal controls at the same age. All children recorded X-ray images of the midsagittal plane of the cervical spine and larynx, and compared the laryngeal positions of ASD and control. In addition, samples of children with vowel prolongation were collected and analyzed for acoustic parameters. X-rays showed that the height of the hyoid bone in the normal group was the lowest at 3 years of age, and ascended at 4 years of age. Nevertheless, the distance from the external acoustic meatus to the hyoid bone was longest at age 4. 4-year-olds with explosive language development showed laryngeal height elevation and anteriorization. In contrast, the hyoid height of the ASD group of all ages was lower than that of the control group, and there was no difference in the hyoid position between the ages. As a result of acoustic evaluation, PFR, vFo, and vAm were significantly higher ASD than control. Low laryngeal height of ASD children may be associated with delayed language development. PFR, vFo, and vAm seem to be voice markers showing the difference between normal and ASD children.
Laboratory investigations of physical (density and porosity), acoustic (velocity and velocity anisotropy), and electrical (resistivity and resistivity anisotropy) properties in deep-sea carbonate sequences at DSDPsites 288 and 289 in the western equatorial Pacific were made and correlated as a function of diagenesis. Profile of resistivity shows almost a mirror image of velocity indicating that electrical resistivity can be a useful variable to determine the diagenetic stage. Some fluctuations in acoustic and electrical properties near the zones of cherty and siliceous limestones for both sites imply significant changes in pore geometry due to interbedded silica. The significantly reduced pore throat size by the presence of silica which provides excess calcium carbonate to adjacent pore spaces is partly responsible for several jumps in acoustic and electrical properties of the zones. These observed geophysical data are interpreted as the result of silica diagenesis influencing carbonate diagenesis.
