  • Recently, much attention has been paid to nonlinear ultrasonic technology as a potential tool to assess hidden damages that cannot be detected by conventional ultrasonic testing. One nonlinear ultrasonic technique is measurement of the resonance frequency shift, which is based on the hysteresis of the material elasticity. Sophisticated measurement of resonance frequency is required, because the change in resonance frequency is usually quite small. In this investigation, the nonlinear electromagnetic acoustic resonance (NEMAR) method was employed. The NEMAR method uses noncontact electromagnetic acoustic transducers (EMATs) in order to minimize the effect of the transducer on the frequency response of the object. Aluminum plate specimens that underwent three point bending fatigue were tested with a shear wave EMAT. The hysteretic nonlinear parameter ${\alpha}$, a key indicator of damage, was calculated from the resonance frequency shift at several levels of input voltage. The hysteretic nonlinear parameter of a damaged sample was compared to that of an intact one, showing a difference in the values.

  • Metal matrix composite(MMCs) have been rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials for high temperature application. It is well recognized that MMCs always experience at least one large cool-down from processing temperature before my significant applied service loading. Due to the large difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the fiber and matrix, large thermal residual stresses generally develop in composites. It was reported from many previous studies that the effects of thermal residual stress on mechanical properties and fracture behavior were much more complex and dramatic than conventional engineering materials. Therefore it is crucial to evaluate the effect of heat treatment which changes the characteristic of distribution of thermal residual stress in MMCs. Single fiber composite(SFC) test based on the balance in a micromechanical model is a quite convenient method to evaluate interfacial shear strength(IFSS) and the failure mode of composite. In this study the effect of heat treatment on IFSS and the microscopic failure mechanism of MMC is investigated by combining acoustic emission(AE) technique with SFC test. The characteristic of AE signal, IFSS and microscopic failure mechanism due to heat treatment condition is discussed.

  • In the experimental study of $N_2$ purge cold flow test of impinging(FOOF) injector for determining of instability region, the whistling sound which has a specific frequency is generated. The frequency of whistling is proportional to the gas flow velocity in part of the oxidizer orifice and due to the coupling of the vibrating gas column and the natural frequency of pipe-orifice shape, the discontinuous jumping phenomena arises. The whistling phenomena have no effect on the combustion instability. Compared the damping factor of 1T1L mode with the hot fire test, the instability region of $N_2$ purge cold flow test is very much like that. It means that flow instability by impinging or mixing of jet is the main reason of combustion instability of impinging injector(FOOF) in the hot firing test.

  • Measurements of bottom backscattering strengths in a frequency range of 6-14 kHz were made on the shallow water off the southern Gyeonggi Bay in Yellow Sea in May 2013, as part of the KIOST-HYU joint acoustics experiment. Geological surveys for the experimental area were performed using multi-beam echo sounder, sparker system, and grab sampling to investigate the bottom topography, sub-bottom profile and composition of surficial sediment, respectively. In this paper, the backscattering strengths as a function of grazing angle (in range of $28^{\circ}{\sim}69^{\circ}$) were estimated and compared to the predictions obtained by Lambert's law and APL-UW scattering model. Finally, the effects of geoacoustic parameters corresponding to the experimental area on the backscattering strengths are discussed.

  • Fracture behavior of pre-cracked compact tension specimens made of AISI 4130 steel was investigated using acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic C-scan measurements. While each specimen was loaded up to a certain level, various acoustic emission parameters were recorded together with the crack opening displacement (COD). An elastic-plastic finite element analysis was performed to calculate COD and the damage (plastic) zone size ahead of crack tip. Ultrasonic C-scans, in a pulse-echo, immersion mode, were done for mapping the damage zone size. The agreement between the finite element results and the measured COD was satisfactory. Based on AE results, the test specimens were found to show ductile behavior. The slope of the total ringdown counts vs. COD curve was useful to determine the crack initiation. The preliminary C-scan images showed evidence of changes in the amplitude of ultrasonic signal in the damaged region, and the shape and size of the damage zone matched qualitatively with the finite element results. A further work on the damage zone sizing was also pointed out.

  • Most of noises from cars or home appliances accompany successive impulsive noise due to repeated operation. A human auditory system is able to perceive the successive impulsive noise as either a set of independent noise or amplitude modulated noise according to its occurrence period. This study is to identify main influence factors on understanding of impulsive characteristics and find most appropriate sound quality metrics to express the successive impulsive noise. To do this, the successive impulsive noises were designed and utilized to perform a listening test for identifying conditions where successive impulsive noise can be recognized to have impulsive characteristics. These results were analyzed with sound quality metrics such as loudness, fluctuation strength, and roughness in order to compare the subjective results with the objective results. Consequently, the results revealed that the successive impulsive noise exhibits impulsive characteristics when its occurrence frequency is less than 50 Hz. It was also observed that roughness and fluctuation strength results are not applicable to express the successive impulsive noise because they heavily depend on the amplitude modulation characteristics. On the other hand, loudness results are considered to be useful as an evaluation factor of the successive impulsive noise through the use of loudness limen because it does not depend on the amplitude modulation characteristics.

  • This study investigates acoustic emission (AE) and micro-deformation characteristics of circular openings through biaxial compression experiments. The experimental results showed a significant increase in the frequency, count, energy, and amplitude of AE signals immediately before damage occurred in the circular opening. The differences in frequency and count between before and after damage initiation were significantly pronounced, indicating suitable factors for identifying damage occurrence in circular openings. The results for digital image correlation (DIC) technique revealed that micro-deformation was concentrated around the openings, as evidenced by the spatial distribution of strain. In addition, spalling was observed at the end of the experiments. The AE and micro-deformation characteristics presented in this study are expected to serve as fundamental data for evaluating the stability of underground openings and boreholes for deep subsurface projects.

  • Motor noise is a major concern in order to improve perceptual feeling of car interior sound due to increased motor usage in passenger cars. The purpose of this study is to propose factors that can represent the acoustic performance of motor noise according to the change of load. To this end, at first, it is shown that power spectrum and total loudness are not fit for noise performance, and then, PNB, partial loudness related to the brush friction component, and PNR, partial loudness related to the torque ripple component are investigated as factors representing motor noise. The performance curve of motor noise using PNB and PNR is proposed to identify trends of motor noise according to the loads. The curve could be a guide for the noise control, the selection of motor, and the improvement of a system.

  • A method to reduce the Contraction and Expansion (CE) noise occurred in an air conditioner is investigated. The noise is measured during the cooling and heating phases in a temperature and humidity chamber to identify the generating phenomenon of CE noise of the air conditioner and the decomposition method is used to estimate its occurrence location. The CE noise of an air conditioner is known to be caused by a stick-slip phenomenon generated by joints of parts connected to the lower decor. Thus a friction experiment was conducted to investigate noise inducing factors. Also, this study established evaluation criteria to effectively analyze the results from friction experiments. Experimental results indicate that increasing surface roughness on both sides of joints is effective. Accordingly, the effect of increased surface roughness on joints of upper and lower decor of air conditioners is evaluated to see its feasibility in a temperature and humidity chamber.
