  • Damage process of CFRP laminates was characterized by Acoustic Emission (AE). The main objective of this study is to determine if the sources of AE in CERP laminates could be identified from the characteristics of the waveform signals recorded during monotonic tensile test. The time history and power spectrum of each individual wave signal recorded during test were examined and classified according to their special characteristics. The wave from and frequency of AE signal from a specimens is an aid to the determination of the extent of the different fracture mechanism such as matrix crack, debonding, fiber pull-out and fiber fracture as load is increased. Four distinct types of signals were observed regardless of specimen condition. The result showed that the AE method could be effectively used for analysis of fracture mechanism in CFRP laminates.

  • Fiber fracture is one of the dominant failure phenomena affecting the total mechanical Performance of the composites. Fiber fracture locations were measured through the conventional optical microscope and the nondestructive acoustic emission (AE) technique and then were compared together as a function of the epoxy matrix modulus and the fiber surface treatment by the electrodeposition method (ED). Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was measured using tensile fragmentation test in combination of AE method. ED treatment of the fiber surface enlarged the number of fiber fracture locations in comparison to the untreated case. The number of fiber fracture events measured by the AE method was less than optically obtained one. However, fiber fracture locations determined by AE detection corresponded with those by optical observation with small errors. The source location of fiber breaks by AE analysis could be a nondestructive, valuable method to measure interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of matrix in non-, semi- and/or transparent polymer composites.

  • The deformation and fracture behaviors of both Al2O3 and Ni 4.5wt.%Al plasma thermal spray coating were investigated by an acoustic emission method. Plasma thermal spray coating is formed by a process in which melted particles flying with high speed towards substrate, then crash and spread on the substrate surface cooled and solidified in a very short time, stacking of the particles makes coating. A tensile test is conducted on notch specimens in a stress range below the elastic limit of substrate. A bendind test is done on smooth specimens. The waveforms of AE generated from the both test coating specimens can be classified by FFT analysis into two types which low frequency(type I) and high frequency(type II). The type I waveform is considered to corresponds exfoliation of coating layers and type II waveform corresponds the plastic deformation of notch tip. The fracture of the coating layers can estimate by AE event and amplitude, because AE features increase when the deformation generates.

  • The main objective of this study is to determine if the sources of AE in corroded specimens of aluminum could be identified iron the characteristics of the waveform signals recorded during fatigue loading. Coupons of notched 2024-T3 aluminum with or without corrosion (at the notch) were subjected to fatigue loading and the AE signals were recorded using non-resonant, flat, wide-band transducers. The time history and power spectrum of each individual wave signal recorded during fatigue crack growth were examined and classified according to their special characteristics. Five distinct types of signals were observed regardless of specimen condition. The waveform and power spectra were shown to be dependent on specimen condition. During the initial phase of crack growth, the signals obtained in the as-received specimens are most probably due to transgranular cleavage caused by extrusion and intrusion under fatigue loading. In the corroded specimen the signal are probably generated by intergranular cleavage due to embrittlement of grain boundary neat the pitting tip. The need for additional research to further validate these findings is indicated.

  • Friction welding is a very useful joining process to weld metals which have axially symmetric cross section. In this paper, the feasibility of industry application was determined by analyzing the mechanical properties of weld region for a specimen of tube-to-tube shape for excavator hose nipple with friction welding, and optimized welding variables were suggested. In order to accomplish this object, friction heating pressure and friction heating time were selected as the major process variables and the experiment was performed in three levels of each parameter. An acoustic emission(AE) technique was applied to evaluate the optimal friction welding conditions nondestructively. AE parameters of accumulative count and event were analyzed in terms of generating trend of AE signals across the full range of friction weld. The typical waveform and frequency spectrum of AE signals which is generated by friction weld were discussed. From this study the optimal welding variables could be suggested as rotating speed of 1300 rpm, friction heating pressure of 15 MPa, and friction heating time of 10 sec. AE event was a useful parameter to estimate the tensile strength of tube-to tube specimen with friction weld.

  • In this study, acoustic emission (AE) signals due to surface cracking and moisture movement in the flat-sawn boards of oak (Quercus Variablilis) during drying under the ambient conditions were analyzed and classified using the principal component analysis. The AE signals corresponding to surface cracking showed higher in peak amplitude and peak frequency, and shorter in rise time than those corresponding to moisture movement. To reduce the multicollinearity among AE features and to extract the significant AE parameters, correlation analysis was performed. Over 99% of the variance of AE parameters could be accounted for by the first to the fourth principal components. The classification feasibility and success rate were investigated in terms of two statistical classifiers having six independent variables (AE parameters) and six principal components. As a result, the statistical classifier having AE parameters showed the success rate of 70.0%. The statistical classifier having principal components showed the success rate of 87.5% which was considerably than that of the statistical classifier having AE parameters.

  • Aerospace structures need high stability and long life because many personal injuries can result from an accident and securing structural integrity for various external environments is more important than any other thing. So first of all we must prove the destruction properties for operating environment, have prediction technology about damage evolution and life, and develop an economical non-destructive technology capable of detecting structure damage. Acoustic emission (AE) have no need of artificial environment like ultrasonic inspection or radio fluoroscopy to emit a certain energy, is a testing technique using seismic signal resulting from interior changes of solids, and enables to observe if any fault is appeared and it grows seriously or not while running. In this study we suggest the method of structural integrity evaluation for aerospace structures through the acoustic emission technique, for which a model plane was manufactured and an actual operation test was conducted.

  • Interfacial and microfailure properties of the modified steel, carbon and glass fibers/cement composites were investigated using electro-pullout test under tensile and compressive tests with acoustic emission (AE). The hand-sanded steel composite exhibited higher interfacial shear strength (IFSS) than the untreated and even neoalkoxy zirconate (Zr) treated steel fiber composites. This might be due to the enhanced mechanical interlocking, compared to possible hydrogen or covalent bonds. During curing process, the contact resistivity decreased rapidly at the initial stage and then showed a level-off. Comparing to the untreated case, the contact resistivity of either Zr-treated or hand-sanded steel fiber composites increased to the infinity at latter stage. The number of AE signals of hand-sanded steel fiber composite was much more than those of the untreated and Zr-treated cases due to many interlayer failure signals. AE waveforms for pullout and frictional signals of the hand-sanded composite are larger than those of the untreated case. For dual matrix composite (DMC), AE energy and waveform under compressive loading were much higher and larger than those under tensile loading, due to brittle but well-enduring ceramic nature against compressive stress. Vertical multicrack exhibits fur glass fiber composite under tensile test, whereas buckling failure appeared under compressive loading. Electro-micromechanical technique with AE can be used as an efficient nondestructive (NDT) method to evaluate the interfacial and microfailure mechanisms for conductive fibers/brittle and nontransparent cement composites.
