  • In this paper, we have studied the enhancement of the acoustic image by combining bases of support for SFR (Spatial Frequency Response) taken at multi-frequencies. The scanning acoustic microscope system have been constructed using the quadrature detector that is able to measure the amplitude and phase of the reflected signal simultaneously. Both real and quadrature components of reflected signal have been acquired at 4.4 ㎒ to 5.6 ㎒ reliably and accurately. In this experimental result, better depth resolution can be obtained by numerically combining images taken at several different frequencies. Image intensity have been better about 3.4 times at multi-frequency than one at a single frequency.

  • Detection ranges of acoustic instruments mainly used for fisheries and their research are derived as the range bordered by a certain signal-to-noise ration (SNR) thershold. The SNR is depicted by several factors on transmitting and receiving, sound propagation, scattering by objects, and mainly self-ship noise. The detection ranges are shown for several fisheries instrument, such as echo sounder, quantiative echo sounder, and bio-telemetry system. The results can be used for designing the instruments, examining the capability of user's own instruments, and interpreting obtained data or echograms. Increasing transmitting power is not as effective for high frequencies as for low frequencies to increase the detection range. Comparison of volume backscattering strengths obtained by the quantitative echo sounder at several frequencies should be done within the same detection range. By applying the concept of the detection range for the bio-telemetry receiver beams, the number of the beams and the beamwidths can be determined.

  • A monitoring method based on acoustic emission (AE) sensor has been widely used to evaluate the damage of structures in underground rock. The acoustic emission signal generated from cracking in material is analyzed as various acoustic emission parameters in time and frequency domain. To investigate from initial crack generation to final failure of rock material, it is important to understand the characteristics of acoustic emission parameters according to the stress ratio and rock strength. In this study, uniaxial compression tests were performed using very strong and weak rock specimen in order to investigate the acoustic emission parameters when the failure of specimen occurred. In the results of experimental tests, the event, root-mean-square (RMS) voltage, amplitude, and absolute energy of very strong rock specimen were larger than those of the weak rock specimen with an increase of stress ratio. In addition, the acoustic emission parameters related in frequency were more affected by specification (e.g., operation and resonant frequency) of sensors than the stress ratio or rock strength. It is expected that this study may be meaningful for evaluating the damage of underground rock when the health monitoring based on the acoustic emission technique will be performed.

  • At liftoff, launch vehicles are subject to harmful acoustic loads due to the intense acoustic waves generated by propulsion systems. Because these waves can cause electronic and mechanical components of launch vehicles and payloads to fail, predicting and mitigating acoustic loads is an important design issue. This article presents the latest information about the generation of acoustic waves and the acoustic design methods applicable to the launch pad. The development of the Japanese Epsilon solid launcher is given as an example of the new methodology for launch pad design. Computational fluid dynamics together with 1/42 scale model testing were performed for this development. Effectiveness of the launch pad design to reduce acoustic loads was confirmed by the post-flight analysis.

  • In this paper, we apply CART(Classification And Regression tree) and OC1(Oblique Classifier1) which methods are widely used for continuous speech recognition and synthesis. We prediet prosodic boundary index by applying CART and OC1, which combine right depth of tree-structured method and To_Right of link grammar method with tri_gram model. We assigned four prosodic boundary index level from 0 to 3. Experimental results show that OC1 method is superior to CART method. In other words, in spite of OC1's having fewer nodes than CART, it can make more improved prediction than CART.

  • Two fundamental aspects of speech summary generation are the extraction of key speech content and the style of presentation of the extracted speech synopses. We first investigated whether acoustic features (speaking rate, pitch pattern, and intensity) are equally important and, if not, which one can be effectively modeled to compute the significance of segments for lecture summarization. As a result, we found that the intensity (that is, difference between max DB and min DB) is the most efficient factor for speech summarization. We evaluated the intensity-based method of using the difference between max-DB and min-DB by comparing it to the keyword-based method in terms of which method produces better speech summaries and of how similar weight values assigned to segments by two methods are. Then, we investigated the way to present speech summaries to the viewers. As such, for speech summarization, we suggested how to extract key segments from a speech video efficiently using acoustic features and then present the extracted segments to the viewers.

  • Acoustic experiments were performed with Zostera marina to study the characteristics of backscattering of seagrass living in the bottom interface. Field experiments were conducted in the Dongdae man, Namhae for day and night to consider the effects of air-bubble from photosynthesis of seagrass. The multi-frequency (30$\~$120 kHz) responses were measured and the distributions of back scattering strength due to the movement of seagrass were Presented by PDF (probability density function) at 120 120 kHz. The results were shown both the frequency dependence and diurnal variation of the backscattering strength between day and night. This diurnal variation may be caused by the amount of oxygen in dissolved bubbles formed by Photosynthesis of seagrass.

  • The velocity and turbulent intensity of the jet core are affected by the vortices around jet. By the control of vortex acoustically, we can expect the changes of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of free and impinging jets. On this paper, we studied the effects of vortex forcing. If vortex pairings are promoted by acoustic excitation, the turbulent intensity is increased and the high heat transfer coefficients are obtained at the small nozzle to plate distance. On the other hand, it has low turbulent intensity at the center of jet. However due to increase of potential core length, it is more effective at the large nozzle to plate distance. Therefore the excited frequency, especially its subharmonic frequency, has an important role to control the jet flows.
