Accurate classification of input signals is the key prerequisite for variable bit-rate coding, which has been introduced in order to effectively utilize limited communication bandwidth. Especially, recent surge of multimedia services elevate the importance of speech/music classification. Among many speech/music classifier, the ones based on support vector machine (SVM) have a strong selling point, high classification accuracy, but their computational complexity and memory requirement hinder their way into actual implementations. Therefore, techniques that reduce the computational complexity and the memory requirement is inevitable, particularly for embedded systems. We first analyze implementation of an SVM-based classifier on embedded systems in terms of execution time and energy consumption, and then propose two techniques that alleviate the implementation requirements: One is a technique that removes support vectors that have insignificant contribution to the final classification, and the other is to skip processing some of input signals by virtue of strong correlations in speech/music frames. These are post-processing techniques that can work with any other optimization techniques applied during the training phase of SVM. With experiments, we validate the proposed algorithms from the perspectives of classification accuracy, execution time, and energy consumption.
The quality of real-time Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) network is affected by network impariments such as delays, jitters, and packet loss. This paper proposes a packet loss concealment algorithm based on voice classification for enhancing VoIP speech quality. In the proposed method, arriving packets are classified by an adaptive thresholding approach based on the analysis of multiple features of short signal segments. The excellent classification results are used in the packet loss concealment. Additionally, linear prediction-based packet loss concealment delivers high voice quality by alleviating the metallic artifacts due to concealing consecutive packet loss or recovering lost packet.

This study examined that how precisely MFCC, LPC, energy, and pitch related parameters of the speech data, which have been used mainly for voice recognition system could predict the vocal emotion categories as well as dimensions of vocal emotion. 110 college students participated in this experiment. For more realistic emotional response, we used well defined emotion-inducing stimuli. This study analyzed the relationship between the parameters of MFCC, LPC, energy, and pitch of the speech data and four emotional dimensions (valence, arousal, intensity, and potency). Because dimensional approach is more useful for realistic emotion classification. It results in the best vocal cue parameters for predicting each of dimensions by stepwise multiple regression analysis. Emotion categorizing accuracy analyzed by LDA is 62.7%, and four dimension regression models are statistically significant, p<.001. Consequently, this result showed the possibility that the parameters could also be applied to spontaneous vocal emotion recognition.

In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to improve the performance of speech/music classification using the recurrent neural network (RNN) in the enhanced voice services (EVS) of 3GPP for hearing aids. Feature vectors applied to the RNN are selected from the relevant parameters of the EVS for efficient speech/music classification. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated under various conditions and large speech/music data. The proposed algorithm yields better results compared with the conventional scheme implemented in the EVS.

This paper proposes an optimal methodology for automatically diagnosing and predicting the severity of the chronic kidney disease (CKD) using patients' utterances. In patients with CKD, the voice changes due to the weakening of respiratory and laryngeal muscles and vocal fold edema. Previous studies have phonetically analyzed the voices of patients with CKD, but no studies have been conducted to classify the voices of patients. In this paper, the utterances of patients with CKD were classified using the variety of utterance types (sustained vowel, sentence, general sentence), the feature sets [handcrafted features, extended Geneva Minimalistic Acoustic Parameter Set (eGeMAPS), CNN extracted features], and the classifiers (SVM, XGBoost). Total of 1,523 utterances which are 3 hours, 26 minutes, and 25 seconds long, are used. F1-score of 0.93 for automatically diagnosing a disease, 0.89 for a 3-classes problem, and 0.84 for a 5-classes problem were achieved. The highest performance was obtained when the combination of general sentence utterances, handcrafted feature set, and XGBoost was used. The result suggests that a general sentence utterance that can reflect all speakers' speech characteristics and an appropriate feature set extracted from there are adequate for the automatic classification of CKD patients' utterances.
In this paper, we propose an approach for dialect classification based on the speed and pause of speech utterances as well as the age and gender of the speakers. Dialect classification is one of the important techniques for speech analysis. For example, an accurate dialect classification model can potentially improve the performance of speaker or speech recognition. According to previous studies, research based on deep learning using Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) features has been the dominant approach. We focus on the acoustic differences between regions and conduct dialect classification based on the extracted features derived from the differences. In this paper, we propose an approach of extracting underexplored additional features, namely the speed and the pauses of speech utterances along with the metadata including the age and the gender of the speakers. Experimental results show that our proposed approach results in higher accuracy, especially with the speech rate feature, compared to the method only using the MFCC features. The accuracy improved from 91.02% to 97.02% compared to the previous method that only used MFCC features, by incorporating all the proposed features in this paper.
