To develop a better restoration technique for altering urban planted forest to more natural forest, the changes of flora, vegetation structure and woody plant growth in the early stage after lumbering only Populus albaglandulosa of the tree layer were studied in Chungdam Park, Chungdam-dong, Kangnam-gu, Seoul for two years (from 1997 to 1998). The results were as follow. First, in the year after lumbering, the species changes occurred not in woody plants but in herbs, which increased by 44%. Three species including Viola verecunda disappeared, and 15 species including ruderals such as Metaplexis japonica and introduced species such as Erechtites hieracifolia appeared newly. Second, lumbering caused the coverages of Quercus aliena, Q. mongolica, Q. acutissima and Sorbus alnifolia in the subtree, or shrub layer, to be increased abruptly. The coverage of Lespedeza bicolor was affected by neighboring plants. Third, in the herb layer the coverage of Artemisia keiskeana was conspicuously increased but those of the others were not. Fourth, by ridding the upper layer canopy, Quercus' growth rates were increased highly. Rates of DBH growth of Q. aliena, Q. mongolica and Q. dentata were increased to 53.0%, 22.9% and 8% in the experimental area, and 23.1%, 8.3% and 6.1% in the control area, respectively, during two growing seasons (from May 11, 1997 to October 27, 1998). The ratios of twig biomasses of the previous year to the next year were 100:565 in Q. aliena, 100:197 in Q. mongolica and 100:644 in Q. dentata in the experimental area. There were also growth ratios of 100:117 in Q. aliena, 100:100 in Q. mongolica and 100:42 in Q. dentata in the control area, respectively. The growth rate increases of Q. aliena and Q. dentata were thus conspicuous in twig rather than in trunk, but that of Q. mongolica was vice versa.
To develop the restoration technique from urban planted forest to natural forest, sprout growth and its effects on vegetation composition in the early stage after lumbering, were studied, using only Populus albaglandulosa of the tree layer in Chungdam Park Chungdam-dong, Kangnam-gu, Seoul during the two years from 1997 to 1998. The results were as follow. After lumbering, the more basal areas of the parent stump, the more sprouts were generated. The basal area of parent stump was related more to biomass than to the number of sprouts. In the cutting area, biomasses of sprouts were 552.7 g?DW/㎡ in first year and 8.7 g?DW/㎡ in second year after lumbering. Therefore, cutting of sprouts in first year resulted in decrease of sprout production in second year. In the non-cutting area, biomass of sprouts was 657.4 g?DW/㎡ and more than that of the experiment. Especially, 2-year sprouts grew to a 304 cm height by the end of the growing season in the second year. The growing season of sprouts was from early April to early September and almost all the leaves of the sprouts remained at the end of the growing season. Specific leaf area decreased along with time elapse and plant height but the differences were not conspicuous. Therefore, it is thought that the reason why p. albaglandulosa sprouts grew fast was due to a long growing period and lower layer leaves which remained at the end of the growing season. In the cutting area of the P. albaglandulosa sprouts, there were no changes in the number of species in the shrub layer but an conspicuous increase in the herb layer. Coverage was no changes in the shrub layer but an increase in the herb layer. In the non-cutting area of P albaglandulosa sprouts, the number of species and the coverage changed a little, and the main species of the herb layer were Phytolacca americana, Eupatorium rugosum and Panicum dichotomiflorum, which are tall plant species.
This experiment has been made to find out the influence of soil bulk density on growth and root development of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa in Buyeo-kun, Chungnam. Bulk density and porosity significantly change according to slope position and soil depth and have a significant effect on tree height, DBH, biomass, and the distribution of root development. The results extracted from the experiments are as follows; 1) Bulk density in average changes from $1.17g/cm^3$ (1.05 ~ 1.40) in lower slope position to $1.43g/cm^3$ (1.36 ~ 1.60) in upper slope position, and porosity from 52.65% (55.05 ~ 45.50) in lower slope position to 41.20% (43.81 ~ 37.21) in upper slope position. 2) Bulk density increases significantly with soil depth. 3) Tree height, DBH, and total biomass decrease with bulk density. 4) Foliage, branch, bolewood, bolebark, and root also significantly have a negative correlation with hulk density. 5) Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa has a shallow root system chiefly distributing only in AI horizon, and critical bulk density is $1.43g/cm^3$. Therefore, slope position, hulk density, and porosity are considered to influence on the growth, biomass, and root development of Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa.
Wood/polyethylene panels were manufactured from Populus alba × glandulosa particles and low density polyethylene particles at three mixing rates, 50:50, 60:40, and 70:30. A total of 15 wood/polyethylene panels was made at 145℃ and 5 minutes hot-press time. Wood/polyethylene panels were tested for internal bond, bending, and dimensional stabilities such as thickness swell and water absorption. Panel performance data were analyzed using the SAS programing package. The test results of the wood/polyethylene panels showed that as the polyethylene mixing rates were increased, the panel property values increased. Based on panels' dimensional stabilities, the optimum wood/polyethylene mixing ratio appeared to be 60:40.
This study was carried out to investigate on the catalytic pyrolysis products of hardwood (Alnus hirsuta (Spach) Rupr. Quercus acutissima Carruters, Robinia pseudoacacia L., and Populus tomentaglandulosa T. Lee) and comparing the rate of catalytic pyrolysis from untreated wood (ordinary wood) with that of treated wood with catalizer (Ammonium phosphate, Ammonium sulfate, Ammonium chloride and Urea). The results were summerized as follows; 1) It is the Populus tomentiglandulosa T. Lee that the species has the most content of holocellulose and pentosan. And Populus tomentiglandulosa exhibited high yield of the distillate in pyrolysis products by Ammonium phosphate with catalizer. 2) The distillate of pyrolysis products is decreased in accordance with increasing catalytic concentration. And untreated wood (ordinary wood) with catalizer has the most distillate of pyrolysis products. 3) The yield of charcoal in pyrolysis products is increased in accordance with increasing catalytic concentration and lignin content of species. 4) The caloric values of charcoal in pyrolysis products is decreased with increasing catalytic concentration. And untreated wood (ordinary wood) with catalizer had the most caloric values, but the caloric values of charcoal did not show statistically significent difference at 5% levels in catalizer.
This experimentation aims to study on the characterics of tree growth by forestry land soil system and the effect of applied fertilizer by kind of tree for obtaining basic data on application of fertilizer to forestry land and to further investigate the restriction factor of tree growth by soil system for promoting more effective application of fertilizer to forestry area. 1. The characteristics of tree growth by soil system showed that tree growth was worst on erosive soil, bad on red or red and yellow soil and generally good on brown soil. 2. With regard to Black Locust, the restriction factor of its growth appeared the content of $P_2O_5$ in the soil and the less the content of $P_2O_5$ is in the soil, the worse its growth was and its growth was bad on clay soil. 3. The growth of pinus seems closely related with the content of $K_2O$ in the soil and the growth of PH was bad on neutral or alkali soil and good on weak-acid soil. Its growth greatly depended upon the content of OM or FN. 4. As Suwon Poplar is a kind of tree requiring for a special soil, its growth required for fertile soil and the content of O. MN $P_2O_5$$K_2O$ was proportional to its growth. 5. The growth of Black Locust, pinus and Suwon Poplar was good on the soil containing much sand but bad on the soil containing much clay.

The productive structure and the productivity of ${\times}$Populus albaglandulosa plantations, where are middle parts of the Korean peninsula, were studied by means of stratifying clip technique and of allometry. The densities of stands in the sample areas were 693 trees/ha in 6 year-old plantation and 527 or 625 trees/ha in 9 year-old one. The photosynthetic part of the productive structure was not shown normal conical form but layering. So this was efficient to transmit solar radiation into the stand floor. The standing crop of the terrestrial parts of 6 year-old plantation was 18.11 ton/ha and that of 9 year-old one 38.8 to 47.3 ton/ha. The wood volume to trunk to 6 year-old was $31.3m^3/ha$ and that of 9 year-old was 68.8 to $83.9m^3/ha$. The annual net production of 6 year-old plantation was 4.8 ton/ha/year and that of 9 year-old one was 10.0 to 11.7 ton/ha/year and its wood volume of trunks was 17.9 to $21.1m^3/ha/year$. In the 9 year-old plantation the standing crop or the annual net production was different between two sample areas. This seemed that the cause was not due to chemical character but to physical character of soil.
In order to elucidate the feasibility to identify the plant species through the photographic tone this study was made. In this study the author made photographs of Juniperus chinensis L., and Populus glandulosa Uyeki, with the panchromatic film using either yellow filter or red filter in different seasons respectively. The author analyzed the value of tone variation at the level of stereoscopic view of the same photographs by using tone scale and Automatic Micro-Photo-Densitometer. The results obtained are summarized as follows: A. Tone scale reading 1. The tone of Populus glandulosa Uyeki was darker than that of Juniperus chinensis L. in a photograph. 2. Regardless of the tree species, tone of photographs obtained with yellow filter was darker than that with red filter. 3. Along the progresses of seasons, the photographic tone was changed. That is, from the spring to the summer it showed darker and than, from the summer to winter it changed lighter. 4. During winter and spring the discrimination between the both species of trees can be easily made by stereoscopic view whether there are leaves on the tree or not rather than by tone observation. 5. Regardless of tree species, variation of tone due to the age was noticed. The older trees have darker tone than the younger one. 6. It is recognized that the yearly difference depends on insolation quantities. 7. The highest reflex light-waves were in between $600m{\mu}$ and $660m{\mu}$ for both species of trees. B. Density reading 1. For the density reading, there was the same tendency as in tone scale reading. 2. The changes of peaks of the scanning curves with Populus glandulosa Uyeki is smoother and takes place in lower position than with Juniperus chinensis L. 3. The scanning curves on the 20th May was smoothest, and change of peaks increased gradually according to the season progresses. 4. In relation to the types of filter the photographs with yellow filter showed less changes of peaks then that with red filter.
In order of remove Cd by plants cultivation in the cadimum contamination soil, six fibers, four flowering and two sapling plants were cultivated at Cd treated soil, adjusted to 15 ppm. The Cd contents of plants and absorbed Cd concentration in plant, and residual Cd in soil were analyzed. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The Cd content in marigold was the highest, 161.7ppm, 22.5 times higher than rice. The Cd contents in plants was in the order of 58.3 ppm in sedge, 58.0 ppm in coreopsis, 43.5 ppm in sunflower, 38.3 ppm in scruber, and 31.9 ppm in flax. 2. The absorbed Cd in Popuaus alba x P. glandulosa was the highest, 24.11 mg/pot, 35.5 times higher than rice. The absorbed Cd by plants were in the order of 10.86 mg/pot in italianpoplar, 9.61 mg/pot in marigold, and 9.04 mg/pot in kenaf. 3. The residual Cd contents was the lowest in Popuaus alba x P. glandulosa soil and cotton followed. 4. Absorbed Cd dontent in plants was negatively correlated with the residual Cd concentration in soil.
In this study, we investigated chemical characteristics of solid residues obtained from inorganic acid hydrolysis of hybrid poplar (Populus alba ${\times}$ glandulosa). Different concentration (72, 36, 18%) of sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid were used for first hydrolysis step and second hydrolysis step were carried out after equally dilution to 4%. Solid residues after consecutive two step hydrolysis were named to RS72 (Residue from Sulfuric acid 72%), RS36, RS18, as well as RC36 (Residue from hydroChloric acid 36%) and RC18, respectively. The yield of RS decreased from 71.2% to 21.4% with increasing sulfuric acid concentration in the first hydrolysis step, whereas that of RC showed little difference (67.0% to 65.0%), irrespective of hydrochloric acid concentration. The lignin content in solid residue was 23.6% for both of RS36 and RS18, 25.6% for RC36 and 27.3% for RC18, respectively. The results of pyrolyzer-GC/MS showed that 24 cellulose derivatives (Levoglucosan, Furfural) and 21 lignin derivatives (Guaiacol, Syringol) were detected. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that the yield of char increased and maximum wieght loss rate decreased with increasing lignin portion of solid residue. Therefore, structure of lignin was condensed effectively by sulfuric acid and by high concentration of acid.
