  • In this study, the natural frequencies and mode shape of an external mounting pod were verified using the modal analysis and modal testing technique for a pod mounted on an aircraft. The procedure associated with the FEM building of an external mounted pod to predict the dynamic behavior of aircraft structures is described. The simplified FEM reflecting the results of the modal testing of a pod is built through the optimization, applied to the structural dynamic model of an Aircraft, used to verified the stability of vibration and flutter of an aircraft.

  • For the purpose of development of high performance gasoline engine, the design technique of the 5-valve(3 intake valves) combustion chamber for a subcompact vehicle has been studied. 3 intake valves cylinder heads were designed by using a 3-dimension CAD program, and steady state flow experiments have been performed with these model. The 5-valve engines, which have larger valve opening areas, have larger intake flow rates and higher flow coefficient than the 4-valve engines. The effects of intake port design parameters of a 5-valve engine on the intake flow rate and bore size were studied, and the design guidelines for the 5-valve engine were established.

  • Air partial pressure ratio and inlet air mass flow are influenced by water vapor and gaseous fuel in mixture on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) engines. In this paper, the effects of the water vapor and the gaseous fuel that change the air mass flow and the air-fuel ratio are studied. Effective air mass ratio is defined as the air mass flow divided by mixture mass flow, and also it is applied to the estimation of the inlet air mass flow and the air-fuel ratio. The presence of the gaseous fuel and the water vapor in the mixture reduces the air partial pressure and the effective air mass ratio of the CNG engines. The experimental results for the CNG engine show that estimation of the air-fuel ratio based upon the effective air mass ratio is more accurate than that of a normal mode.

  • An optical directional coupler, which consists of quantum wells with nanothickness, is designed by using Modal Transmission Line Theory (MTLT). To demonstrate the validity and usefulness, the propagation characteristics and the coupling efficiencies are rigorously evaluated at nanoscale couplers, which consist of double quantum wells with different effective masses. The numerical result reveals that the coupling efficiency of nanoscale couplers is maximized at a coupling length 2052.3 nm, if the total electron energy is 83.9 meV. Furthermore, the coupler operates as a filter with narrower band as the barrier thickness increases.

  • Fretting-wear caused by turbulence excitation for KSNP(Korea standard nuclear power plant) steam generator is investigated numerically. Secondary sides density and normal velocity are obtained by the thermal-hydraulic data of the steam generator. Because nonlinear finite element analysis is complex and time consuming, work rate is estimated by using linear analysis for simple straight 2-span tube. Wear volume and depth by using work rate calculation are estimated. Span length, secondary side fluid density and normal velocity are adopted to study the effects on the fretting-wear by turbulence excitation. When secondary sides density and normal velocity is increased, It turns out that secondary side density and normal gap velocity are very important paramater for fretting-wear phenomena of the steam generator.

  • A high-resolution numerical study is carried out to investigate the transient process of the combustion and the shock-train developments in an ethylene-fueled direct-connect dual-mode scramjet combustor. Air-throttling is then applied at the expansion part of the combustor to provide mass addition to block the flow to subsonic speed, hence to enhance the fuel-air mixing and ignition. Present simulation shows the detailed results for the better understanding of transient processes of the operation regimes in the dual-mode scramjet combustor.

  • Considering spherically symmetric spacetimes embedded in a 5-dimensional static Lorentzian manifold, within the large distance limit of DGP model, we study null geodesic equations. We discuss possible relations of particles following the geodesics with the gravitational waves detected recently, in comparison with the electromagnetic waves propagaing in these brane spacetimes.

  • The antenna is mounted on the vehicle and operated, so its components must be able to withstand the shock that may occur while driving. In this study, the stability of antenna mounted on the vehicle is verified through the connection between modal analysis and transient analysis. The shock data used was taken from MIL-STD-810H, METHOD 516.8. As a result of the analysis of antenna, the maximum equivalent stress 169.49MPa and minimum margin of safety 2.31 has occurred on the bracket of antenna. Thus, it was found that the antenna has enough stability during the operation.

  • Aim of this study is to identify dyestuff of the Dallryeong(official's robe in Joseon Dynasty, 16th century) excavated from Yuryang-dong, Cheonan, in 1996. For this purpose, extracted dyestuffs from Dallryeong fabric and from natural dyestuffs for red color(safflower, Sapanwood, Madder) which are presumed to have been used in the Dallryeong, are analyzed and compared by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). As a result, HPLC chromatogram of extracts of the Dallryeong's dyestuff and safflower are showed a peak at 17.5 minutes. The UV/Vis spectra of the samples are showed the maximum absorption wavelength at 519nm. This result is identical with the analysis of the previous studies on red dyestuff of safflower. In addition, the analysis of Mass Spectrometry(MS) showed the identical result of the peak with m/z 910. Following these results, excavated pink Dallryeong were considered to have been dyed with safflower.
