  • The combustion behaviors of the blends of Korean anthracite, bituminous coal and their blends were studied with a thermogravimetric analyzer. Concerning the burning profiles of the anthracite-bituminous coal blends in TGA, it has been observed the independent burning of two coals without any interaction between two coals. With the blends of 50% anthracite with 50% bituminous coal in weight basis, the combustion tests in a utility boiler have been carried out for the analysis of the combustion and operational characteristics by increasing the power output from 134 MW to 197 MW. The stable combustion has been observed in a boiler. With the increase of power output, the exhaust gas temperature was exceeded the design value of $430^{\circ}C$, so the combustion air was taken from atmosphere instead of the boiler penthouse.

  • In this study, deterioration degrees of concrete were investigated at laboratory under seawater attack and cycling freeze-thaw, which are major durability performance deterioration factors of concrete. Deteriorations of mixed concrete using Portland & blended cement were examined by instrumental analysis of changes in relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and compressive strength. After 520 cycles of freeze-thaw, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of concrete mixed with normal Portland and LHC over 75% showed relatively low resistance of approximately 44% of those values of SRC. Concrete replaced with 50% fine powder of blast furnace slag showed the most excellent freeze-thaw resistance among the tested blended cement concrete.

  • The interest in biodiesel is increasing rapidly. As a result, the price of vegetable oil that is used as a raw material for biodiesel is skyrocketing. Studies of biodiesel using animal waste as a means of solving these problems are underway. Biodiesel produced from animal fat contains considerably more saturated fatty acids than that produced from vegetable oil. In addition, it has a high cetane number and a high heating value. On the other hand, the fluidity decreases at lower temperatures because of the large amount of saturated fatty acids. For the biodiesel production, waste chicken oil and soybean oil were first purified. The raw materials were mixed at various ratios from 1:9 to 9:1. The methanol / oil molar ratio was also changed from 7 mol to 15 mol. The entire reaction time was one hour. The results showed that the optimal mixing ratio of soybean oil to waste chicken oil was 3:7, and the optimal methanol / oil molar ratio was 13. Moreover, the BD yield was 90.2%, the FAME content was 96.6%, and the LAME content was 4.1%. This result satisfied the Korea Industrial Standard (KSM2413).

  • Concentrations of benzo[$\alpha$]pyrene in edible oils from Korean market were evaluated by high performance liquid chromatography. Benzo[$\alpha$]pyrene known of the carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs), has been found at variable concentrations in several foods. This is associated with several factors during the process including contaminated raw materials, exposure of environment, and procedure of process or cooking. The levels of benzo[$\alpha$]pyrene were ranged from 0.5 to 1.4 $\mu$g/kg in virgin olive oil. Benzo[$\alpha$]pyrene contents in refined and virgin olive oil, sesame oil, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, safflower oil, and processed oil were 0.6-1.0 $\mu$g/kg, 0.9-1.3 $\mu$g/kg, 0.6-3.3 $\mu$g/kg, 0.5-1.1 $\mu$g/kg, 1.2-1.7 $\mu$g/kg, 1.0-2.1 $\mu$g/kg, and 1.0-1.4 $\mu$g/kg, respectively.

  • The conversion characteristics and fuel properties for producing biodiesel (BD) by blending beef-tallow, an animal waste resource with a high-saturated fatty acid content, and sunflower-oil, a vegetable oil with a high-unsaturated fatty acid content, were investigated. For this investigation, the effects of the control factors, such as the oil-blend ratio and methanol-to-oil molar ratio, on the fatty acid methyl ester and BD production yield were also investigated. The kinematic viscosity reduction effects of BD using heating and ultrasonic irradiation were verified, and the optimal temperature of each BD-diesel fuel blend for reducing the kinematic viscosity was derived using the correlation equation. As a result, the optimal conditions for producing blended biodiesel were verified to be TASU7 and a methanol-to-oil molar ratio of 10:1. The analysis results of the fuel properties of TASU7 satisfied the BD quality standard; hence, the viability of BD blended with waste tallow as fuel was verified. The experimental results on the kinematic viscosity reduction showed that heating is more effective in reducing the kinematic viscosity because it took less time than ultrasonic irradiation, and the equipment was cheaper and more straightforward than the ultrasonic irradiation method.

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate $SO_2$ removal efficiency of anthracite - bituminous coal blend combustion in a fludized bed coal combustor with Ca/S, anthracite ratio, bed temperature, and waste paper sludge particle size. The experimental results were presented as follow ; the effect of the desulfurization by the particle size of waste paper sludge was a great and $SO_2$ removal efficiency was heigest in paper sludge dia $1016{\mu}m$. And the difference of $SO_2$ removal efficiency according to air velocity was not too large. As Ca/S mole ratio incresed, $SO_2$ removal efficiency incresed rapidly up to Ca/S mole ratio 3 while the desulfurization rates did not increse too largely in the range of more than the level. The bed temperature had a great deal of effect on the desulfurization rate. So the $SO_2$ removal efficiency was a graet using waste paper sludge that the properbility of paper sludge as sorbent was conformed.

  • This study was designed to observe the effects of feeding the mixed oils of the sardine oil containing n-3 EPA, DHA and the safflower oil which is rich in n-6 linoleic acid on the improvement of the lipids and enzyme activities of serum in rats. Experimental oils mixed with 16% butter (control group) and 8% butter + 8% olive oil, 8% butter and various level of sardine and safflower oils were administered to the male rats of the Sprague Dawley for 4 weeks. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST, EC 2.6.1.1), alanine aminotransferase (ALT, EC 2.6.1.2), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, EC 1.1.1.27) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP, EC 3.1.3.1) in serum were significantly decreased in the all experimental groups than in the control groups, and activities of ALT and LDH were remarkably lower in the group 5 (4% sardine 0il + 4% safflower oil). Concentrations of total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol in serum were lower in the other groups than in the dontrol groups, and particularly, lowest in the group 5. Concentrations of LDL, LDL-cholesterol, phospholipid and triglyceride in serum were lower in the all experimental groups than in the control group. Concentrations to total cholesterol and cholesteryl ester in serum were lowest in the group 5. The ratio of cholesteryl ester to total cholesterol was remarkably high in the control group, while group 2 (8% olive oil) was the lowest. From this results, the feeding equal quantity mixed oil with n-3 PUFA rich sardine oil and n-6 PUFA rich safflower oil were effective on the improvement of the lipid composition in the serum. It might be due to the effects of appropriate ratios of P/S, 0.85 and n-6/n-3P, 2.85 in the test lipids.

  • In this study, contributes to improving the state of this problem using cavitation by ultrasonic energy to reduce fuel costs, which take up a considerable part of ship operation costs, by making the use of on-board blended fuel oil more stable. An experiment simulating on-board blending methods was completed. Fuel (M.G.O & MF-180) was mixed at a volume ratio of 0.25:0.75 and, 0.75:0.25, and the effect of ultrasonic energy on blended fuel oil was examined after applying ultrasonic energy to blended fuel oil using an ultrasonic treatment unit. With the results, we confirmed the blending problem reported by vessels and residual carbon was reduced by up to 28.4%. In addition, based on the results for reduction of residual carbon content and dispersion stability, it was confirmed that the collapse pressure of the cavity due to the ultrasonic energy was effective to atomization of fuel particle and the temporary availability of mixed fuel containing a heavy fuel increased.
