This paper analyzes the fatigue-life of welded joints using the notch stress approach. In the notch stress approach, the notch effects are usually approximated by introducing weld-bead parameters for the local detailed weld joints. The actual bead shape is complex and 3-dimensional. It may also greatly influence the fatigue strength. In this study, the welded shape was modeled using a 3D-scanner. The critical distance method was adopted in the evaluation of the fatigue effective notch stress for the weldments. Fatigue life tests were performed to verify the present method of fatigue life estimation for two types of welded plates with longitudinal attachments. The estimated results of the present methods were applied to the results of the experiment. The results of the analysis showed that the scatter of fatigue-life for the experimental data expressed in the nominal stress was significantly reduced by applying the effective fatigue stress of the present study.

Global full 3D finite element analysis fatigue models are constructed for flip-chip BGA on system board to predict the creep fatigue life of solder joints during the thermal cycling test. The fatigue model applied is based on Darveaux's empirical equation approach with non-linear viscoplastic analysis of solder joints. The creep life was estimated the creep life as the variations of the four kinds of thermal cycling test conditions, pad structure, composition and size of solder ball. The shortest fatigue life was obtained at the thermal cycling test condition from $-65^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$. It was increased about 3.5 times in comparison with that from $0^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. At the same conditions, the fatigue life of SMD structure as the change of pad structure increased about 5.7% as compared with NSMD structure. Consequently, it was confirmed that the fatigue life became short as the creep strain energy density increased in solder joint.

To assure the safety of rolling stock, it is important to perform the fatigue analysis of reduction gear unit in rolling stock considering a variation of velocity and traction motor capability. This paper presents fatigue analysis of the damage of reduction gear unit of railway vehicle under variable amplitude loading(VAL) based on quasi-static fatigue analysis using finite element model and linear Miner's rule. The VAL for the simulation was constructed from the tractive effort curve and train run curves of railway vehicle under commercial operation condition using MSC.ADAMS dynamic analysis. The finite element model for evaluating the carburizing effect on the gear surface was used for predicting the fatigue life of the middle gear based on strain-life based approach. The results showed that the frequent high starting torque due to a quick start as well as increasing numbers of stops at station would decrease the fatigue life of reduction gear unit.

Plastic and creep deformations of a solder joint on thermal cycle play an important role in the reliability of optical telecommunication components. Solder joint strain is increased with the thermal cycle time and it causes mis-alignments and power loss in the optical component. Furthermore, the component can be failed since the deformation exceed the limitation of the fatigue life. We applied the finite element analysis method to solve the problem of the solder joint reliability on thermal cycle. Plastic and creep deformations are calculated by the finite element method. And, the fatigue lire is predicted by using creep-fatigue prediction models with calculated strains. The temperature conditon of the analysis was referred from the Telcordia reliability schedule (-40 to 75). Also, the three ramp renditions, 1/min, 10/min and 50/min, and dwelling time were considered to analyze the differences of results.

The fuel injection pipe of a common rail system used in a clean diesel vehicle plays a role in supplying fuel from a rail to the injector of each cylinder connecting the engine under a repeated internal pressure. The fuel injection pressure is increased to over 200 MPa for satisfying EU emission standards and improving fuel efficiency, and a heading process and an autofrettage process are required for preventing folding defects and improving fatigue life. In this study, the flow stress and SN data of the material of the pipe are obtained through a tensile test and a fatigue test. The heading process for checking the folding defects of pipe ends is performed by using FEA. Furthermore, the optimal design of the autofrettage process for improving fatigue life considering not only the compressive residual stresses of the inner surface but also the tensile residual stresses of the outer surfaces of the pipe under the repeated internal pressure is performed by using FEA. To verify the process design, fatigue analysis for the autofrettaged pipe is performed.

The fatigue life in wheels was predicted by simulating the experimental method using Finite-Element analysis. Based on a high frequency fatigue property, calculations of the stresses in wheels were performed by simulating the rotating bending fatigue test. Wheels made of an aluminum alloy(A356.2) were tested using a bending fatigue tester. Results from bending fatigue test showed a linear correlation between bending moment and stress amplitude. Consequently, Finite-Element calculations were performed by a linear analysis. In order to find stress-cycles curves, spoke parts of wheel were tested using a rotary bending fatigue tester. Also, highly accurate Finite-Element analysis requires regression lines and confidence intervals from these results. In conclusion, if the fatigue data related to the material and manufacturing procedure are reliable, the prediction on fatigue lift in wheels can be carried out with high accuracy.

This document is a experimental study on fatigue life of brace mounting weld joint. A brace is used to put sub-frame together on the main frame with high strength bolts. It has low fatigue life so a patch is in need for improving a fatigue characteristics of welded joint in brace mounting This paper presents the most pertinent patch size for truck. For this, a critical stress is computed at the point of fatigue crack occurred on truck frame by finite Element Analysis. Using by this critical stress. Designers are able to determin whether fatigue crack is occurred and are able to select a pertinent patch type. And then, with a selected patch type, structural joint stiffness was estimated to compare to the conventional and other patch type or brace mounting Finally, fatigue test were performed to prove a suitability of selected prototype compare with the conventional and other patch type or brace mounting.

Recently in weapon systems development, the importance of reliability has been emphasized due to the increase in complexity and the rapid development of key components and components. Accordingly, the importance of lifespan testing is increased. However, lifespan testing to verify the reliability of a system is costly and takes a lot of time. Therefore in this paper, it was demonstrated that the most critical item of a bladder type accumulator is the bladder. Fatigue life is sensitive to temperature and pressure, with temperature having more impact. The fatigue life of the bladder was estimated to be 18,140 hr through fatigue analysis, which satisfies the required life expectancy of 10,000 hr.

With developing the next generation high speed railway, there need to be plans to make sure of running safety though researchs on the crack and break of rail by rolling contact fatigue. Therefore, this study performed the parametric analysis effecting on the fatigue life of rail using simplified equations. It analyzed the internal stress of rail according to the track quality, train velocity, wheel radius, track stiffness, sleeper space, wheel load. For the more, via the finite element method, it analyzed shear force on the rail head which could be changed by the early length of crack, angle of crack and temperature. As a result, this study continued the main parameter effecting on the fatigue life of rail.

Laser shock peening(LSP) is an innovative surface treatment technique, and it has been successfully used to improve the fatigue performance of metallic components. It is widely known, that cracks caused by metal fatigue occur only at the location where the metal is subject to tension, and not at the location where the metal is subjected to compression. Therefore, LSP can be employed to improve fatigue life because it generates a high-magnitude compressive residual stress on the surface and interior of metallic components. In this study, we analyzed the applicability of the LSP method in improving fatigue performance and evaluated the various parameters that influence the compressive residual stress. Further, we analyzed the change in the mechanical properties such as surface dynamic stress and the compressive residual stress on the surface and interior of metallic components.
