  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of shipping water on deck are investigated by using a simplified two-dimensional model. Formulation of the shipping water on deck leads to a nonlinear hyperbolic system of equations based on the shallow-water wave theory. Time-domain solution of these equations are obtained numerically using a finite difference method which adopts predictor-corrector method for time-marching and 2nd upwind differencing method for convection term calculation. To confirm the validity of the present numerical method, we calculated some shallow-water wave problems accompanying a bore and compared the obtained results with the analytic solutions. We found good agreements between them. Though the calculation results of shipping water on deck, we show that the shipping water flows into the deck as a rarefying wave arid grows into a bore after colliding with a deck structure. Also we examined the effects of acceleration and slope of deck and found that they have significant influences on the flow of shipping water.

  • In this paper, the three-dimensional stress effect of thermal oxide is simulated. We developed a three-dimensional finite element numerical simulator including three-dimensional adaptive mesh generator that is able to refine and eliminate nearby moving boundary of oxide, and oxidation solver with stress model. To investigate the behavior of thermal oxidation the simulations of thermal oxidation for island and hole structures are carried out assuming silicon wafer of <100> direction, temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$, oxidation time of 60min, wet ambient, initial oxide thickness of $300\AA$, and nitride thickness of $2, 000\AA$. The main effect of deformation at the corner area of oxide is due to distribution of oxidant, but the deformation of oxide is affected by the stressin theoxide. In the island structure which is the structure mostly covered with nitride and a coner is opended to oxidation, oxidation is reduced at the coner by compressive stress. In the hole structure which is the structure mostly opedned to oxide and a coner is convered with nitride, however, oxidation is increased at the coner by tensile stress.

  • To investigate major influencing factors on earth pressure acting on an arch-shaped cut and cover tunnel, Monte Carlo simulation based quantitative sensitivity analysis was carried out for mechanical properties of ground as well as excavation configuration-related design factors. From the sensitivity analysis, it was intended that effects of earth pressures from different influencing factors on a cut and cover tunnel should be numerically identified. Output factors used in the sensitivity analysis such as vertical and horizontal earth pressures at different tunnel positions were obtained from the finite element analysis. In this study, it was revealed that depending upon positions where horizontal as well as vertical earth pressures were acting, they were differently influenced by the same input factors. In addition, earth pressures acting an cut and cover tunnel depended mainly on the embankment at crown and the inclination of cut slope.

  • Penetrator with enhanced lateral effect (PELE) is a novel projectile that does not require dynamite and a fuse. It comprises a high-density jacket that is closed at its rear end and filled with a low-density filling material. To study the explosion characteristics of PELE using AUTODYN-3D code, the calculation models of the projectile body and the bullet target were developed and the process of penetrating an aluminum-2024 alloy target using PELE was simulated. The scattering characteristics after PELE penetrated the aluminum-2024 alloy target were studied for different filling materials. The explicit finite element analysis of PELE fragmentation was implemented with the stochastic failure criterion in AUTODYN-3D code. As the filling expanded, the fragments gained velocity and dispersed laterally, increasing the damage area considerably. The number and shape of PELE fragments differed depending on the impact pressure of the filling that fragmented during the penetration and lateral dispersion processes.

  • In this study, the pressurization characteristics of the small piezoelectric hydraulic pump for a brake system has been analyzed through modeling the full hydraulic pump components; the pump chamber, check valve, pump load, pump drive controller etc. To analyze the pressurization characteristics, the process of charging pressure in the chamber with stacked-layer piezoelectric actuator were firstly modeled. Secondly, the flow coefficient of the check valve in terms of valve opening has been calculated after computational fluid dynamics analysis, such as the pressure distribution around check valve and the flow rate, was conducted. Also the pump driving controller, which controls the input voltage to the actuator, was designed to make the load pressure follow the input pressure command. The simulation results find that it takes about 0.03ms to reach the operating load pressure required for the braking system. The simulation result was also verified through comparison to the result of the pump performance test.

  • There have been many studies about the chemical corrosion of converter's refractories. However, few studies have been reported for the stress corrosion induced by the weight of the refractories and by the two bottom shape models designed for the converter. In this study, the stress distributions of the two converter models were analyzed by FEM. Model 1 has the step edge shape and model 2 has the round edge shape. Simulation results show that model 2 of round bottom edge has higher gravitational stress just below the slag line than the model 1. Model 2 is considered to suffers more serious corrosion than model 1 during the middle working stage by the thermal and chemical factors.

  • In this paper, strain and stress on space frame are analyzed at racing car under crash loads. As the deformation is reduced to a minimum during crash and the vulnerable parts are grasped, the safety of driver is ensured. The vehicle frame is modelled with truss structure by inputting the material property of carbon steel on finite element analysis. The increase of impulse momentum is due to speed change at frontal collision. This influence effected on vehicle frame is also analyzed by ANSYS program. The deformation of the frame is studied by applying the crash loads at front, side and rear directions. Though the influence on the seat of driver is small at frontal and rear crash, the deformation due to impact is progressed into this seat. The safety of frame is enhanced by making up for these weak deformations and these results of simulation analysis can be applied to the production of the actual vehicle frame.

  • The wrecker truck of lift type is used to move damaged car in accident spot or to move illegal vehicle in towaway zone toward pound.. This special vehicle drives by lifting front or rear side of car with the driving type of towed car. Each car is modelled with CATIA and is simulated with FEM analysis program ANSYS. This study analyzes how dangerous is the triple collision among the wrecker-towed car-driving car as comparing with the usual collision accident with cars. It is studied how responsible is the towed car in case of crashing its back side by driving car. The influence on the driving angle of towed car by lifting wrecker is also considered.

  • In this study, probabilistic steady seepage behavior of soil foundation beneath water retaining structures according to the location of cutoffs was studied. A Monte Carlo Simulation based on the random finite element method that considers the uncertainty and spatial variability of soil permeability was performed to evaluate the probabilistic seepage behavior. Fragility curves were developed by calculating the failure probability conditional on the occurrence of a given water level from the probability distribution obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The fragility curve was prepared for the flow quantities such as flow rate through foundation soil, uplift force on the base of structure, and exit gradient in downstream to examine the reliability of the water retaining structure and the foundation soil. From the fragility curves, the effect of the location of cutoff wall on the reliability of water retaining structure and foundation soil according to the rise in water level was studied.

  • In this paper, the design of BLDC (brushless direct current) motors based on torque and back-EMF equations was carried out to assess the application of the motor in concrete vibrators. The air gap flux density of the motor is an important parameter because the length of the motor and the size of the diameter are given. The air gap magnetic flux density was calculated through a simplified magnetic circuit, and basic design of the shape and dimensions of the motor were then determined by carrying out experiments based on torque, back-EMF, and air magnetic flux density equations. After setting the outer and inner diameters, stack lengths, and rated speed of the motor, a detailed design was performed by simulations using the finite element method by designating the diameter and thickness of the motor as the key parameters. The final design to satisfy the target torque and the lowest THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) was carried out along with a simulation.
