  • In general there are many cracks in rocks. In this study, we are concerned with the mechanical effect on cracks on the behavior of rocks. For this purpose, we used spedmens rnade of mortar having one crack set which has a constant length and same direction. Orientafion of this set was varied with respect to the loading axis. We did a number of uniaxial experiments and observed propagafion of the crack set to understand the effect set of the geometry of the crack set and its location on the mechanical behavior of the rocks with distributed crack sets. Finally, we analysed our experiments by FEM elastic analyses and Homogenization theory.

  • Excessive generation of BOG during the LNG transportation not only causes the severe financial loss but also leads to the unexpected disaster. Therefore, the carrier cargo insulating interior LNG should be carefully designed based upon an accurate heat transfer analysis. However. it is not simple to analyze heat transfer of LNG cargo, because it is in a complex insulation structure and LNG carrier experiences a complicated heat transfer according to various kinds of voyage conditions. In this paper, we carried out the transient finite element heat transfer analysis for a cargo of Mark-111 membrane-type LNG carrier during laden voyage, and we compared heat transfer rates between considering natural convection and considering conduction. For this goal, we developed a PCL program incorporating with a commercial MSC/NASTRAN FEM code.

  • The demand for electric vehicles has increased because of environmental regulations. The lithium-ion battery, the most widely used type of battery in electric vehicles, is composed of a cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte. It is manufactured according to the pole plate, assembly, and formation processes. To improve battery performance and increase manufacturing efficiency, the manufacturing process must be optimized. To do so, simulation can be used to reduce wasted resources and time, and a finite-element method can be utilized. For high simulation quality, it is essential to reflect the material properties of the electrode by considering the pores. However, the material properties of electrodes are difficult to derive through measurement. In this study, the representative volume element method, which is a homogenization method, was applied to estimate the representative material properties of the electrode considering the pores. The representative volume element method assumes that the strain energy before and after the conversion into a representative volume is conserved. The method can be converted into one representative property, even when nonhomogeneous materials are mixed in a unit volume. In this study, the material properties of the electrode considering the pores were derived. The results should be helpful in optimizing the electrode manufacturing process and related element technologies.

  • This paper presents nonlinear numerical analysis results which were compared with the tested tensile strengths of CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic) laminates with 14 different stacking sequences. The composite laminate coupons were cured under an autoclave pressure using resin-impregnated unidirectional tapes. The nonlinearity of the matrix was considered for the analysis, which was obtained from lamina tests. The Hashin failure criteria and progressive failure analysis were used for the nonlinear finite element analysis. The comparison results show that the current approach is acceptable to predict the tensile strengths of the CFRP laminate coupons with various stacking sequences and no damage. However, it is not acceptable to predict the tensile strengths of the laminate specimens with a center hole.

  • The three methods of analysis (i) REV(representative elemental volume), (ii) non-REV and (iii) joint network analysis are introduced in this paper to analyze the groundwater flow in jointed rock mass and the inflow into underground excavations. The results from those methods are compared one another to reveal their characteristics by varying the number of joints and the diameter of the opening. The pre-processor, the so-called sequential analysis, is introduced to predict the equivalent hydraulic conductivity of a jointed rock mass having a number of intersecting joints. Using the finite element mesh, joint map and sequential analysis, the equivalent hydraulic conductivities are calculated for all 445 elements. The hydraulic inhomogeneity and the determination of the representative properties of jointed rock masses are discussed. In the REV analysis where the entire rock mass is homogenized through the representative properties, the inflow is increased regularly and consistently by increasing the joint density, the opening size and the conductivity contrast value. Though the non-REV analysis showed irregular variation of the inflow due to the local inhomogeneity allowed to individual elements, the inflow approached the REV results as the characteristic length increases. The joint network analysis showed the most sensitive reaction to the joint density, the opening size and the presence of the network crossing the opening. The reliability of the network analysis depends on the geometric data of individual joints. In view of the limited field data on joint geometry and possible uncertainty the REV and non-REV methods are considered more practical and rational than the joint network analysis.

  • The quantitative analyses and the mechanical interpretation of discontinuity planes are the most important factor for the study of strength and deformation properties of rock masses containing discontinuity planes. However, the relationship between the factors investigated in the field and the actual mechanical properties of discontinuity planes is not fully understood. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of density, length, and spacing of joints on elastic modulus of rock masses as these values vary. A new parameter which has a direct relation with the elastic modulus of discontinuity planes is also preposed in this study. The combination of finite element methods and homogenization methods has been used for the numerical analyses of a uintcell with discontinuity planes, which is generated using random-number generation methods. The elastic modulus of the discontinuity plane is found from the numerical analyses. The final results propose not only the relation between the investigation parameters of discontinuity planes and the elastic modulus of rock masses but also a new parameter, an effect area ratio having a linear relation with the elastic modulus of rock masses.

  • A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment-curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into consideration the bond-slip effect by using monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. The modification of the moment-curvature relation to reflect the fixed-end rotation and pinching effect is also introduced. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.

  • In this study, the upper bound theory is applied to a reinforced slope to develop an limit state analysis method. As processing of this upper bound theory in formulating finite element, the basic idea of numerical method can be obtained from a macroscopic point of view with an anisotropic homogeneous material. The reinforced soil strength reliability depends on properties of reinforcements which consist of the interaction of interfaces between back fill and reinforcements. Both soil's mechanical property and overall behaviour of reinforced soil can be controlled via arranging geometry and relative proportions of reinforced soil. Therefore, the upper bound theory can not only predict the particular limit state action of reinforced soil slope but also is efficiently able to estimate the local plastic failure.

  • Electrical resistivity survey is widely applied to the dam seepage problems. Main purpose of the resistivity survey is to delineate the inhomogeneity in the dam. In this study, two- (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) resistivity survey methodology and corresponding interpretations of the data have been analyzed using 3-D resistivity modeling results. Since resistivity structures beneath the dam and its shape are 3-D in nature, we could get more accurate image of the dam structures using 3-D survey compared to 2-D survey even though we cannot employ the grid-shape survey layout.

  • This paper presents a multi-scale progressive fatigue damage model incorporating the model for interfacial debonding between fibers and matrix. The micromechanics model for the progressive interface debonding was adopted, which defined the four different interface phases: (1) perfectly bonded fibers; (2) mild imperfect interface; (3) severe imperfect interface; and (4) completely debonded fibers. As the number of cycles increases, the progressive transition from the perfectly bonded state to the completely debonded fiber state occurs. Eshelby's tensor for each imperfect state is calculated by the linear spring model for a damaged interface, and effective elastic properties are obtained using the multi-phase homogenization method. The fatigue damage evolution formulas for fiber, matrix and interface were proposed to demonstrate the fatigue behavior of CFRP laminates under cyclic loading. The material parameters for the fiber/matrix fatigue damage were characterized using the chaotic firefly algorithm. The model was implemented into the UMAT subroutine of ABAQUS, and successfully validated with flat-bar UD laminate specimens ([0]8,[90]8, [30]16) of AS4/3501-6 graphite/epoxy composite.
