In this study, using the governing equations for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water dispersed within engine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a turbocharger. The governing equations are the general equations being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing on a turbocharger lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluids, water dispersed within engine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are showed that the friction force and bearing load capacity decrease as increasing the volume percent of water.
Water-lubricated ball bearings consist of rolling elements, an inner raceway, an outer raceway, a retainer, and an operating lubricant. In the water environment, ball bearings are required to sustain high loads at high speeds under poorly lubricated conditions. For the analysis of bearing behavior, friction torque is considered as the main factor at various flow rates, rotating speeds, and roughnesses between the rolling element and raceways. When the bearing operates at high rotating speeds, the friction torque between the raceway and rolling elements increases considerably. This frictional torque is an important factor affecting bearing reliability and life cycle duration. For understanding the flow conditions in the inner part of the bearing, this study focuses on the flow around the rotating and revolving rolling elements. A simple model of fluid flow inside the ball bearing is designed using the commercial CFD program ANSYS.
The purpose of this paper is to analyze and discuss the effects of surface roughness by comparing the elastohydrodynamic lubrication(EHL) analysis of smooth surface and rough surface as the ball bearing. In order to do this, The average flow model is adapted for the interaction of the flow rheology of lubricant and surface roughness. The average Reynolds equation and the related flow factor which describes the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology, the viscosity-pressure and density-pressure relations equations, the elastic deformation equation, and the force balance equation are solved simultaneously. The results show that effects of surface roughness on the film thickness and pressre distribution should be considered especially in EHL contact problems.
A journal bearing is used in a hydrodynamic lubrication state, but it becomes a boundary lubrication state that asperity of a contact part touch each other when pressure is too high and an enough oil film is not formed by viscosity change due to lubricating oil temperature. At this time, abrasion due to contact between a journal and a bearing is unavoidable, and scuffing damage that the journal adheres to the bearing occurs if the process is repeated. Damage of the journal bearing is an important problem because it gives huge damage to a machine and can generate large accidents such as economic loss and human life damage. In this study, method for using the pull-up resistor concept was introduced as the monitoring technology. This monitoring system is important to enhance reliability of the engine.
A kinetic theory analysis is used to study the ultra-thin gas flow field in gas bearings. The Boltzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. Calculations are made for flows inside micro-channels of backward-facing step, forward-facing step, and slider bearings. The results are compared well with those from the DSMC method. The present method does not suffer from statistical noise which is common in particle based methods and requires less computational effort.
Tapered roller bearings are widely used in high axial-load and radial-load applications. In this study, a numerical analysis is performed to study a finite line contacts EHL problem between a tapered roller and raceway in tapered roller bearings. Converged solutions are obtained for moderate load and material parameters using a finite difference method with non-uniform grids and the Newton-Raphson method. The contours and sectional plots of pressure distribution and film shape are compared. The pressure distribution and film shapes near both ends of the roller are very different from those in the central part and are transversely asymmetric. The maximum pressure and absolute minimum film thickness always occur at the small end of the roller.

To product multi-grade oil like engine oil, a sort of mineral base oil is mixed with a fundamental additive liquid package and a polymer liquid as viscosity index improver in order to improve the lubricating property of oil. That is, engine oil is the mixture of more than two fluids. In this paper, it will be systematically organized the governing equation describing non-Newtonian thermo-hydrodynamic lubrication related with the mixture of incompressible fluids based on the principle of continuum mechanics. Then, in order to find how the thermal analysis effect on the bearing performance lubricated with the mixture of multi-fluids, it will be compared to the performances between the mixture of each liquid to be blended and multi-grade engine oil as a single fluid in a high speed journal bearing. It is found that, in the case of lower viscosity oil, the difference of pressure distribution between the above two cases turns out to be existed, even if the load capacity is same level.
