  • Exact comparisons of the thermal conductivities of the base fluid and a nanofluid are very important in the early stages of nanofluid development. A simple procedure of measuring the thermal conductivity of the two fluids by the transient hot wire method and numerically dividing these values is used for this purpose. However, because the experiments are not performed simultaneously and the physical properties of the measurement system are sometimes not properly known, large errors are incurred during the evaluation process. This article proposes a new apparatus for thermal conductivity comparison where the working principle is mainly based on relative measurement rather than absolute measurement. The measuring circuit and data processing steps are explained in detail; a validation test was performed using the well-known glycerine and engine oil.

  • The in-duct acoustical sources of fluid machines are often characterized by the source impedance and strength using the linear time-invariant model. However, negative resistances, which are physically unreasonable, have been found throughout various measurements of the source properties in IC-engines and compressors. In this paper, the effects of the time-varying nature of fluid machines on the source characteristics are studied analytically. For this purpose, the simple fluid machine consisting of a reciprocating piston and an exhaust is considered as representing a typical periodic, time-varying system and the equivalent circuits are analyzed. Simulated measurements using the analytic solutions show that the time-varying nature in the actual sources is one of the main causes of the negative source resistances. It is also found that, for the small magnitude of the time-varying component, the source radiates large acoustic power if the piston operates at twice the natural frequency of the static system. or integral submultiples of that rate.

  • The aim of this study is to compare the numerical results obtained by 2-D and 3-D models which are used to examine the wave field around a permeable submerged breakwater. At first, the numerical model, which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model, is used and validated by comparing with existing experimental data. And then, the numerical test on the wave field around a permeable submerged breakwater is performed. It is revealed from the numerical results that, at the onshore side of the submerged breakwater, the wave height by 2-D analysis is higher than that by 3-D analysis. Also, the time-averaged mean flow around a submerged breakwater is discussed in detail.

  • In this study, the coupled-numerical model has been newly developed to investigate numerically scouring and deposition around a coastal structure like a submerged breakwater using a numerical wave model and a lagrangian particle model for sand transport. As a numerical wave model, LES-WASS-2D (Hur and Choi, 2008) is adopted. The model is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance term and determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model. Distinct element method (Cundall and Strack, 1979), which is able to apply to many dynamical analysis of particulate media, as a lagrangian particle model for sand transport is newly coupled to the numerical wave model. The numerical simulation has been carried out to examine the scour problem in front of an impermeable submerged breakwater using the newly coupled-numerical model. The numerical results has been compared qualitatively with an existing experimental data and then its applicability has been discussed.

  • The author determined the relationship between the hauling veloicty and the hydrodynamic resistance of the sablefish pot shaped conic frustum like, and induced the formulae to determine the diameter of the main line and the net horse power of the pot hauler. The results are summarized as follows: 1. The maximum hydrodynamic resistance (with its weight in water) of the pot T(kg), when the bottom webbing is covered by a cloth to imitate the catches are scattered on the bottom, is eatimated as $$ T=120v^{1.1} (0.3{\leqq}v{\leqq}0.8) $$ where v denotes the hauling velocity of the pot in m/sec. 2. When P. P. 3 strand rope is used as main line, the diameter d(mm)is recommended to satisfy the formula $$ d=72 \frac{D}{H} V^{1.1} where H denotes the depth of the fishing ground and D the intervals of the pots linked to the main in m respectively. 3. The pot hauler must displace the net horse power p(ps) of $$ P= \frac{75}{120} \frac{D}{H} v^{2.1}$$

  • Piezoresistive flow sensors with four different types of microbeam structures were fabricated using (100), n/$n^+$/n three-layer silicon wafer and their characteristics were investigated. Piezoresistors were formed through boron diffusion and its values were about $1\;k{\Omega}$. Three-dimensional silicon microbeams were constructed by porous silicon micromachining and curled microbeams were fabricated by the difference in the thermal expansion coefficient between silicon and metal. The output response of the fabricated sensor was evaluated through half- bridge. The output voltage increased with increasing length of microbeam at the same flow velocity, while the detectable measurement range extended with decreasing length of microbeam. The output voltage of the fabricated sensors were increased with quotient of 3.2 of the flow rate since the stress of the beam versus the gas flow showed non-linear characteristics.

  • The aim of this study is to survey the effects of laying drainage layer in sandy beach on beach stabilization. At first, the numerical model developed by Hur and Lee (2007), which is able to consider the flow through a porous medium with inertia, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed/Sandy beach interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulent model in 3-D wave field (LES-WASS-3D), is validated by comparing with existing experimental data. And then, numerical simulation is carried out to examine the characteristics of wave-sandy beach interaction for a beach with/without drainage layer. From the numerical results, it is shown that mean ground-water level around a foreshore decreases and offshore-ward flow over a seabed reduces in case of a beach with drainage layer. Moreover, the effects of cross profile of drainage layer and incident wave condition on mean ground-water level around a foreshore are also discussed as well the distribution of wave setup around the foreshore.

  • The present paper studies the effect of the slope gradient of a fully permeable submerged breakwater using a newly developed numerical model that is able to consider the flow through a porous midium with inertial, laminar and turbulent resistance terms, i.e. simulate directly WAve-Structure (submerged breakwater)-Sand seabed interaction and can determine the eddy viscosity with LES turbulence model in 2-Dimensional wave field (LES-WASS-2D). The developed model was validated through the comparison with an existing experimental data, and further used for various numerical experiments in oder to investigate the complicated hydrodynamics on the varying slope gradient of permeable submerged breakwater. We found an acceptable phenomenon, as we expect intuitively, that reflection and transmission coefficients decrease simultaneously as slope gradient decrease. In addition, the breaking point, the circulation flow and mean vorticity around a submerged breakwater are throughly discussed.

  • The non-float midwater pair trawl was effective in the mouth opening and control of the working depth in midwater and bottom. In contrast, we confirmed that it was difficult to keep the net at surface above 30 m of the depth by means of the full scale experiment in the field and the model test in the circulation water channel. To solve this problem, the kites were attached to the head rope of the non-float midwater pair trawl. In this study, four kinds of the model experiments were carried out with the purpose of applying the kite to the korean midwater pair trawl. The results obtained can be summarized as follows: 1. The working depth of the non-float midwater pair trawl with the kite was shallower than that of the proto type and non-float type. The working depth of the kite type was approximately 20m with 2 kites and about 5m with 4 kites under 4.0 knot. The working depth was almost constant but the depth of the head rope sank approximately 15m and 10m according to the increase in the front weight and the wing-end weight, respectively. The changing aspect of the working depth was constant, but the depth of the head rope sank approximately 22m according to the increase in the lower warp length (dL). 2. The hydrodynamic resistance of the kite type was almost increased in a linear form in accordance with the flow speed increase from 2.0 to 5.0 knot. The increasing grate of the hydrodynamic resistance tended to increase in accordance with the increase in flow speed. The hydrodynamic resistance of the kite type was larger approximately 5~10 ton larger than that of the non-float type and the proto type. The hydrodynamic resistance of the kite type increased approximately 3ton with the changing of the front weight from 1.40 to 3.50 ton and approximately 4 ton with the changing of the wing-end weight from 0 to 1.11 ton and approximately 5.5 ton with the changing lower warp length (dL) from 0 to 40 m, respectively. 3. The net height of the kite type was increased approximately 10 m with the change in the kite area from $2,270mm^2$ to 4,540 $\textrm{mm}^2$. The net height of the kite type was aproximately 50 m and 30 m larger than that of the proto type and the non-float type, respectively. The changed aspect of the net width was approximately 5m with the variation of the flow speed from 2.0 to 5.0 knot. 4. The filtering volume of the kite type was larger than that of the proto type and the non-float type by 28%, 34% at 2.0 knot of the flow speed and 42%, 41% at 3.0 knot, and 62%, 45% at 4.0 knot, and 74%, 54% at 5.0knot, respectively. The optimal towing speed was approximately 3.0 knot for the proto type and was over 4.0 knot for the non-float type, and the optimal towing speed reached 5.0 knot for the kite type. 5. The opening efficiency of the kite type was approximately 50% and 25% larger than that of the proto type and the non-float type, respectively.
