Wet Drop Impact Response Analysis of CCS in Membrane Type LNG Carriers -I : Development of Numerical Simulation Analysis Technique through Validation- (멤브레인형 LNG선 화물창 단열시스템의 수면낙하 내충격 응답해석 -I : 검증을 통한 수치해석 기법 개발-)

  • While the structural safety assessment of Cargo Containment System(CCS) in membrane type LNG carriers has to be carried out in consideration of sloshing impact pressure, it is very difficult to figure out its dynamic response behaviors due to its very complex structural arrangements/materials and complicated phenomena of sloshing impact loading. For the development of its original technique, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure under sloshing impact pressure. In this study, for the exact understanding of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure in membrane Mark III type LNG carriers under sloshing impact pressure, its wet drop impact response analyses were carried out by using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and were also validated through a series of wet drop experiments for the enhancement of more accurate shock response analysis technique. It might be thought that the structural response behaviors of impact response analysis, such as impact pressure impulses and resulted strain time histories, generally showed very good agreement with experimental ones with very appropriate use of FSI analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, finite element modeling and material properties of CCS structure, finite element modeling and equation of state(EOS) of fluid domain.

  • For the development of the original technique of structural safety assessment of Cargo Containment System(CCS) in membrane type LNG carriers, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of dynamic response behavior of CCS structure under sloshing impact pressure. In the previous study, the wet drop impact response analyses of CCS structure in membrane Mark III type LNG carriers were carried out by using Fluid-Structure Interaction(FSI) analysis technique of LS-DYNA code, and were also validated through a series of wet drop experiments for the enhancement of more accurate shock response analysis technique. In this study, the characteristics of structural shock response behaviors of CCS structure were sufficiently figured out by careful examinations of the effects of specimen weight, drop height, incident angle, corrugation and stiffness of inner hull on its shock response behaviors. The shock response analysis of upward shooting fluid to inner hull was performed, and the reason of faster strain response than shock pressure one was also figured out.

  • The high-skewed and/or composite propellers of current interests to reduce the ship vibration and to increase the acoustic performance are likely to be exposed to the unexpected structural problems. One typical example is that the added mass effect on the propellers working in the non-uniform wake field reduces the natural frequency of the propeller leading to the resonance with the low-frequency excitation of the external forces. To avoid this resonance problem during the design stage, the technique of fluid-structure interaction has been developed, but the higher-order effect of the blade geometry deformation is not yet considered in evaluating the added mass effects. In this paper the fluid boundary-value problem is formulated by the potential-based panel method in the inviscid fluid region with the velocity inflow due to the body deformation, and the structural response of the solid body under the hydrodynamic loading is solved by applying the finite element method which implements the 20-node iso-parametric element model. The fluid-structure problem is solved iteratively. A basic fluid-sturcture interaction study is performed with the simple rectangular plates of thin thickness with various planform submerged in the water of infinite extent. The computations show good correlation with the experimental results of Linholm, et al. (1965).

  • This study is aiming to find one of reasonable guidelines to select a proper berthing ship at Kwang Yang harbors for loading/unloading for the POSCO(Pohang Steel Co. Ltd.). For dynamic analysis for the moored ships, the selection of subjected vessels has to be given the priority, so that the motion characteristics are figured out. The calculation of the dynamic fluid forces and wave, wind and current forces in time domain are followed. Then, the dynamic mooring analyses are performed. This study might contribute to make a new guideline by which the proper sized and loaded ships could be moored safety at the berths of Kwang Yang Harbor.

  • Due to advanced new weapons and changes in the combat environment, survivability improvement methods for naval ship design have continuously evolved. Surface naval ships are easily detected by the enemy and, moreover, there are many attack weapons that may be used against surface naval ships. Therefore, it is important for modem naval ships, especially combat naval ships, to ensure survivability. In order to design a naval ship considering survivability, the designers are required to establish reasonable attack scenarios. An explosion may induce local damage as well as global collapse of the ship. Therefore, possible damage conditions should be realistically estimated at the design stage. In this study, an ALE technique was used to simulate the explosion analysis, and the survival capability of damaged naval ships was investigated. Especially, the author have establish the simple method of estimation of survival time for damaged naval ships.

Blast Analysis and Damage Evaluation for Reinforced Concrete Building Structures (RC Building 구조물의 폭발해석 및 손상평가)

  • The blast damage behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures exposed to unexpected extreme loading was investigated. To enhance the accuracy of numerical simulation for blast loading on RC structures with seven blast points, the calculation of blast loads using the Euler-flux-corrected-transport method, the proposed Euler-Lagrange coupling method for fluid-structure interaction, and the concrete dynamic damage constitutive model including the strain rate-dependent strength and failure models was implemented in the ANSYS-AUTODYN solver. In the analysis results, in the case of 20 kg TNT, only the slab member at three blast points showed moderate and light damage. In the case of 100 kg TNT, the slab and girder members at three blast points showed moderate damage, while the slab member at two blast points showed severe damage.

  • The present study focuses on the effect of staggered integration factor (SIF) on Morton effect simulation results. The Morton effect is a synchronous rotordynamic instability problem caused by the temperature differential across the journal in fluid film bearings. Convection and conduction of heat in the thin film displaces the hot spot, which is the hottest circumferential position in the thin film, from -20 to 40 degrees ahead of the high spot, where the minimum film clearance is experienced. The temperature differential across the journal causes a bending moment and the corresponding thermal bow in the rotating frame acts like a distributed synchronous excitation in the fixed frame. This thermal bow may cause increased vibrations and continued growth of the synchronous orbit into a limit cycle. The SIF is developed assuming that the response of the rotor-lubricant-bearing dynamic system is much quicker than that of the bearing-journal thermal system, and it is defined as the ratio between the simulation time of the thermal system and the rotor-spinning period. The use of the SIF is unavoidable for efficient computing. The value of the SIF is chosen empirically by the software users as a value between 100 and 400. However, the effect of the SIF on Morton effect simulation results has not been investigated. This research produces simulation results with different values of SIF.

Study on Roll Motion Characteristics of a Rectangular Floating Structure in Regular Waves (규칙파 중 사각형 부유식 구조물의 횡동요 운동특성에 대한 연구)

  • This study focused on the roll motion characteristics of a two-dimensional (2D) rectangular floating structure under regular beam sea conditions. An experiment was conducted in a 2D wave tank for a roll free decay test in calm water and the roll motion in a range of regular waves with and without heave motion to investigate the motion response and heave influence on the roll motion. A numerical study was carried out using Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes (RANS)-based CFD simulations. A grid convergence test was conducted to accurately capture the wave condition on the free surface based on the overset mesh and wave forcing method. It was found in the roll free decay test that the numerical results agreed well with the experimental results for the natural roll period and roll damping coefficient. It was also observed that the heave motion had an impact on the roll motion, and the responses of the heave and roll motion from the CFD simulations were in reasonable agreement with those from the experiment.

A Study on the Manoeuvrability of 1/42.0 Scaled KCS (1/42.0 KCS 모형선의 조종성능에 관한 연구)

  • The emergence of new concept ships, such as autonomous ships, has drawn much attention on the manoeuvrability of ships because of the safe navigation and operation of ships. Although the manoeuvrability of KRISO Container Ship(KCS) has been frequently reported, there have been few documents of representative manoeuvre cases conducted in various methods by one institute. This paper presents the manoeuvrability of the ship in 1/42.0 model scale by 3 methods: free running model tests, horizontal planar motion mechanism tests, and computational fluid dynamics analysis. KRISO reports KCS manoeuvre data: 35° turning circle tests and 20/20(10/10) zigzag manoeuvring tests. In addition, a simple formula for integrating and comparing manoeuvre indices, Manoeuvrability Comparing Simple Index(MCSI), is proposed.

Numerical Study on Rayleigh-Taylor Instability Using a Multiphase Moving Particle Simulation Method (다상유동형 입자법을 이용한 Rayleigh-Taylor 불안정성의 수치해석)

  • Complexity of multiphase flows due to existence of more than two interface including free-surface in one system, cannot be simulated easily. Since more than two fluids affect to flows and disturb interface, non-linearities such as instabilities can be appeared. Among several instabilities on multiphase flows, one of representative is Rayleigh-taylor instability. In order to examine in importance of density disparity, several cases with numerous Atwood number are set. Moreover, investigation of influence on initial disturbance were also considered. Moving particle simulation (MPS) method, which was employed in this paper, was not widely used for multiphase problem. In this study, by adding new particle interaction models such as self-buoyance correction, surface tension, and boundary condition at interface models, MPS were developed having more strength of physics and robust. By applying newly developed multiphase MPS, considered cases are performed and compared each other. Additionally, though existence of disagreement of magnitude of rising velocity between theoretical values from linear potential theory and that of numerical simulation, agreement of tendency can be proved of similarity of result. the discordance of magnitude can be explained due to non-linear effects on numerical simulation which was not considered in theoretical result.
