  • To analyze the population genetic structure of the oyster Crassostrea gigas Thunberg, 34 specimens werecollected from Gamak bay in March, 2007. Total genomic DNA was extracted from each sample and PCR was performed to identify haplotypes of oyster by using HCO2918 and LCO1491 primers. Four kinds of haplotypes (CR1, CR2, CR3, and CR4) were identified. Among these group, CR3 showed the highest relative frequency at 73% than any other of haplotypes. On the basis of hierarchical genetic structure, the population of Gamak showed a higher genetic relationship with Namhae, but the genetic distance between southern and western coasts was negative and no statistical significance was found (p>0.05). Consequently, the oyster from Korea coast is determined to be both homogenous and large.

  • Streptococcus sp. were isolated from cultured flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) having Streptococcosis during 2004 to 2005 in Jeju Island. Ninety four Streptococcus iniae strains were isolated using biochemical test and multiplex PCR assay. Three genotypes (A, B, C-type) of S. iniae were appeared in the RAPD analysis and they showed international or local genetic polymorphism. Presently, S. iniae having A-type is a dominant S. iniae genotype in Jeju and showed band patterns at about 550, 850, 1000, 1300 and 2000 base pares. In this study, the reported P14 random primer, that used to distinguish serotypes of S. iniae could not be applied to distinguish Jeju island S. iniae's genetic polymorphism.

  • The profenofos-resistant P-Pro strain of house fly (Muscn domestica L.) was derived from the pyraclofos-resistant strain by selecting with profenofos for 7 generations. The resistance was shown to be incompletely dominant by the reciprocal crosses between the resistant and susceptible strains. Linkage group analysis for the dominant factor responsible for this resistance was carried out by the F, male-backcross method, using susceptible multi-chromosomal marker strain. The major factors for profenofos resistance were located on the second and the fifth chromosome and the other chromosomes had a little effect on the development of this resistance. The male determining factor (M) was linked to the third chromosome in this strain.

  • Deutzia paniculata is an endemic species, which is geographically restricted within southern part of Korea. Four populations of D. paniculata were sampled across its natural range, from the smallest population, Mt. Dalum, which held less than 100 individuals, to the largest, Mt. Unmum, over 3,500 individuals. Artificial pollination study showed that D. paniculata had an obligate outcross breeding system. Major pollinators were two bee species, Lasioglossum exiliceps and Allograpta balteata (de Geer). The breeding system and patterns of allozyme variation of D. paniculata were investigated to understand the population biology and to explain on reserve designs and management proposals relevant to this species. D. paniculata held relatively low genetic variation at the eight allozyme loci surveyed. Measures of genetic variation in this species alleles per locus ($A_s=1.33$), proportion of polymorphic loci (P=23.85%), and expected heterozygosity ($H_{es}=0.110$) were similar to values reported for endemic species. Mt. Dalum population (DAL) was composed with one clone based on allozyme data. Individuals of D. paniculata were frequently included in root connected clusters. Population genetic structure between and within four populations was probably the result of shrinking effective population size and the extinctions of intervening populations. For the conservation of genetic diversity, maximum number of different genotype need to be protected based on genetic structure and mating system.

  • This study estimated the genetic parameters of growth-related traits from 11-month-old olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) base population in which wild and cultured broodstocks were introduced. The heritability of body weight, total length, body height, body shape, and condition factor of the base population was estimated to be 0.754, 0.753, 0.789, 0.438, and 0.369, respectively. Genetic correlations between body weight and total length, between body weight and body height, and between total length and body height were 0.969, 0.960, and 0.960, respectively, showing highly positive correlation. Genetic correlations between body weight and body shape, between total length and body shape, between body height and body shape were -0.403, -0.344, and -0593, respectively, showing low negative correlation. Overall, olive flounder might be an appropriate selective breeding species with the high heritability of the traits in an 11-month-old population.

  • The inheritance and varietal differences of resistance to bacterial leaf blight caused by Xanthomonas oryzae in rice were studied. Among eighteen cultivars used, 'IR2061-465-1-5-5', 'IR2061-552-6-9', 'IR 1561-228-9-3', ana 'Milyang42, were found to have a high level of resistance to the three isolates of X. oryzae at maximum tillering and flowering stage. Varietal differences in lesion development of the cultivars belonging to the same varietal group were clearly recognized. For the genetic study on bacterial leaf blight resistance, two rice breeding lines 'IR2061-465-1-5-5', 'IR1561-228-3-3' were crossed with susceptible cultivar 'Milyang 23'. The $F_1,F_2,\;and\;F_3$ progenies were evaluated at flowering stage using the bacterial isolate 'JN 7853'(II). Average lesion length of the $F_1$ plants of the crosses showed longer than that of resistant parents, and the frequency distribution of lesion length in the $F_2\;and\;F_3$ populations showed continuous variation.

  • The study of genetic diversity was carried out in Atractylodes japonica $K_{OIDZ}$. Although this species has been regarded as medically important one, there is no report on population structure in Korea. Starch gel electrophoresis was used to investigate the allozyme variation and genetic structure of eight Korean populations of this species. Of the 15 genetic loci surveyed, nine (60.0%) was polymorphic in at least one population. Genetic diversity was high at the species level $(H_{es}=0.144)$, whereas, that of the population level was relatively low $(H_{ep}=0.128)$. Nearly 87% of the total genetic diversity in A. japonica was apportioned within populations. The sexual reproduction, high fecundity, and perennials are proposed as possible factors contributing to high genetic diversity. The indirect estimated of gene flow based on Gst was 1.69.

  • Aging is a complex biological process characterized by a gradual decline in cellular and physiological functions. This natural process is associated with age-related diseases, including Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and hypogonadism, which are significant health concerns among older individuals and can significantly impact their quality of life. Researchers have found that epigenetic markers play a crucial role in regulating aging and age-related diseases. Epigenetic markers are heritable gene expression alterations that do not change in the DNA sequence. This review focuses on the involvement of various epigenetic marks, such as RNA methylation, DNA methylation, and microRNAs (miRNAs), in regulating gene expression patterns associated with age-related diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and hypogonadism. These epigenetic alterations can lead to the dysregulation of specific genes and signaling pathways, contributing to the development and progression of Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis, and hypogonadism. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind these epigenetic modifications is essential for both the aging population and individuals seeking ways to promote overall well-being. By gaining deeper insights into how epigenetic marker alteration occurs during aging and age-related diseases, researchers can potentially develop targeted therapeutic strategies to alleviate the impact of these conditions and improve the quality of life for older individuals.
