  • This study was carried out to estimate the genetic correlations for the carcass and growth traits of Hanwoo bulls measured at 12 and 18 months of age on the basis of the data form 1,823 heads of Hanwoo bulls raised at the Livestock Improvement Main Center from 1991 to 1998. Genetic correlations were estimated with multiple trait animal model using MTDFREML. The genetic correlations of the body weight at 12 months with average daily gain during 6${\sim}$12 months and with the body length were 0.76 and 0.79, respectively. The genetic correlations of the body weight at 18 months with average daily gain during 6${\sim}$18 months and with the body length were 0.86 and 0.82, respectively. The genetic correlations of the carcass weight with dressing percent, eye muscle area, backfat thickness and carcass length were 0.39, 0.37, 0.44 and 0.63, respectively. And estimate of 0.36 was obtained for the genetic correlation between backfat thickness and marbling score. The high and positive genetic correlations of 0.71 and 0.96 were estimated for the carcass weight with the body weights at 12 and 18 months. The genetic correlations of the carcass weight with body lengths at 12 and 18 months were 0.63 and 0.75, respectively. Positive genetic correlations were estimated for the dressing percentage with the body weight, average daily gain, body length, thurls width and chest girth. Low genetic correlations were estimated between eye muscle area and the growth traits ranging from -0.07 to 0.32. Dressing percentage was low correlated genetically with the growth traits except for the chest girth at 18 months. The genetic correlation between marbling score and chest girth at 18 months estimated was 0.25.

  • Estimate of heritabilities, genotypic and phenotypic correlations and path coefficient analysis were performed for the seven characters of barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L.). Heritabilities of broad sense for stem length and spike length were 0.923 and 0.907. Kernels per spike, grain yield and 100 grain weight also showed high heritabilities. High genotypic and phenotypic correlations existed between stem length and 100 grain weight. Grain yield showed highly significant phenotypic correlation with spike length, 100 grain weight and kernels per spike. Genotypic correlations between those characters were moderately high. Number of stem had greatest direct effect but the number of spike had a strong negative direct effect upon grain yield. Kernels per spike via number of spike showed greatest indirect effect and the number of stem via number of spike showed strong negative indirect effect upon grain yield.

  • Since the estimate of the genetic relations between characters gave us effective basic informations about the selection of good strains of silkworm, the experiment was carried out to estimate the heritability and the genotypic correlation, etc. using the 21 combinations F1, 's by diallel crosses of seven strains of the silkworm. As the result of this experiment some conclusions obtained were as follows ; 1. The genotypic correlation is estimated highly positive in the heritability for all the 9 characters. 2. The correlations between all the characters are positive and the genotypic correlation is generally higher than the phenotypic one. 3. Since all the correlations between the have length and other characters are highly positive, it can be considered that the effects of the other characters on the have length are very important.

  • This study was conducted to estimate genetic parameters for growth and egg production traits in Black Korean native chicken (L strain) and Korean White Leghorn (F, K strains) using a multi-traits animal model BLUP. Traits used for this study were body weight at 150 days (BW150) and 270 days (BW270), age at first egg (DAY1st), egg weight at first egg (EW1st) and 270 days (EW270), and number of eggs laid by 270 days (EP270), and included 68,688 pedigree and 123,905 performance records collected from 2001 to 2013. In L, F, K strains, heritability estimates of BW150 were high (0.48, 0.52 and 0.50, respectively); of BW270 were high (0.56, 0.57 and 0.56); of DAY1st were medium to high (0.45, 0.39 and 0.31); of EW1st were low (0.15, 0.16 and 0.15); of EW270 were high (0.58, 0.55 and 0.59) and of EP270 were moderate (0.22, 0.21 and 0.20). The genetic and phenotypic correlation of DAY1st with EP270 were highly negative (-0.73 to -0.63 and -0.48 to -0.42). The genetic and phenotypic correlation of EP270 with BW150 and BW270, respectively were low negative (-0.16 to 0.01 and -0.14 to -0.03) and low to moderate positive (-0.08 to 0.07 and -0.13 to 0.04). The genetic and phenotypic correlation of EW270 with BW150 and BW270, respectively were moderate to high positive (0.39 to 0.49 and 0.36 to 0.46) and (0.29 to 0.33 and 0.34 to 0.37). The study showed that there is a potential for genetic improvement of Korean Indigenous chicken through selection program.

  • Heritability of heading date, maturing date and culm length were high and the year variation was relatively low. Yield components were considerably low in heritability due to large year variation. Direct effects of number of spikes/$m^2$ and 1, 000 grain weight to yield were high. For improved selection efficiency, at least three years continuous evaluation of experiments would be desired.

  • This experiment was carried out to analyze genetic parameters for the selection of silkworm by diallel-crossing with three Japanese and four Chiness silkworm races. Heritability, genetic correlation and path coefficient were calculated as the statistical parameters to evaluate direct or indirect effects of various gentic characters on bave weight. The heritabilities of fifth instar period, cocoon weight, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ration, fibroin contents, boiling off ratio and bave weight were over 76.65% in both F1 and F2 generations. There were positive coefficients in both phenotypic and genotypic correlations between male and female of both F1 and F2 generations. The latter showed greater values in general. The correlation between bave weight and the characters of cocoon weight, cocoon layer weight, cocoon layer ratio, fibroin contents were over 0.727 in both sexes of F1 and F2. Therefore, these results suggest that above characters would be useful for genetic selection of silkworms. As result of path coefficient analysis, there was a direct effect with path coefficient value of 0.991 between bave weight and F1 female cocoon layer weight, and with the value of 0.803 between bave weight and F1 male cocoon weight. In F2 the effect showed 0.938 between bave weight and male cocoon weight and cocoon layer weight had greater influence on direct or indirect effects (in path coefficient) than the others.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for productive traits in Duroc breed. In this study, 40,657 records for productive traits and the pedigree data of 47,974 families were collected from 41 farms registered at the Korean Animal Improvement Association (KAIA) from 2004 to 2011. The REMLf90 program was used to analyze a multiple traits animal model with fixed effects of sex, contemporary group, parity and age at the end of the test as covariate and random effects of animal and residual error. The heritabilities of days to 90 kg (D90KG), average daily gain (ADG), backfat thickness (BF) and eye muscle areas (EMA) were estimated to be 0.334, 0.340, 0.335, and 0.200, respectively. The genetic correlation coefficients were -0.992 between D90KG and ADG, -0.142 between ADG and BF, -0.361 between ADG and EMA, and -0.243 between BF and EMA. Conversely, positive genetic correlations for D90KG with BF and EMA were 0.13 and 0.36, respectively.

  • Heritabilities of growth traits, and phenotypic and genetic correlations for rearing masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou in adult stage were described. Genetic parameters were estimated for total length, body weight, and head length of masu salmon at 19 and 23 months of age. The heritabilities of growth traits estimated for sire component at 19 months of age was 0.22 in each trait in 1995, and ranged from 0.19 to 0.36 at 23 months of age in 1996. Phenotypic and genetic correlations were high among growth traits(0.85~0.98, 0.67~1.26, respectively). Family selection or that combined with individual selection is proposed to improve growth of masu salmon.

  • The data including milk yields, fat and protein percent for 628,395 heads collected by National Agricultural Cooperative Federation, 15 type traits and final score for 62,262 heads collected by Korea Animal Improvement Association, which were born in 1998 to 2004, and net profits calculated from milk price and raising expenses of individuals were used to estimate genetic parameters. The highest positive genetic correlation, 0.81, was shown between body depth (BD) and loin strength (SR). Genetic correlations between body depth (BD) and udder depth (UD), front teat placement (TP) and front teat length (TL) were -0.23, which were lowest among the linear type traits. Furthermore, medium level of negative genetic correlations were shown the milk yield with milk contents rate traits. Mostly low level of positive genetic correlations were shown between the milk traits and linear score traits except milk yield and stature. Most of the genetic correlations of between the linear score traits and net profit were low level of positive or negative genetic correlations. Among the genetic correlations, body depth (BD), angularity (DF) and rear attachment width (UW), and final score (FS) with net profit were high as 0.17, 0.17, 0.18 and 0.18, respectively. Finally all of the genetic correlations between net profit and milk traits were positive and higher than the linear traits with positive genetic correlations. The results of this study suggest that net profit has been related with the linear traits, such as body depth (BD), angularity (DF) and rear attachment width (UW) traits, and furthermore, milk traits including yield and contents rates influence positively and greatly on net profit.
