  • This paper presents design of a bearingless main rotor of SNUF (Seoul National University Flap) blade equipped with active trailing-edge flap to reduce the hub vibratory loads during helicopter forward flight. For that purpose, sectional design of the flexbeam is carried out using the thin-walled composite material rotating beam vibration analysis program (CORBA77_MEMB) in EDISON. Using the multi-body dynamics analysis program, DYMORE, blade dynamic characteristics and those of the loads control are examined using the active trailing-edge flap in terms of the flexbeam sectional design.

  • Recently composite materials have dominated most engineering fields, owing to their better performance, increased durability and flexibility to be customized and designed for a specific required property. This has given them unprecedented superiority over conventional materials. With the help of the ever increasing computational capabilities of computers, researchers have been trying to develop accurate material models for the complex and integrated properties of these composites. This has led to advances in virtual testing of composite materials as a supplement or a possible replacement of laboratory experiments to predict the properties and responses of composite materials and structures. This paper presents a review on the complex multi-scale modelling framework of the virtual testing machines, which involve computational mechanics at various length-scales starting with nano-mechanics and ending in structure level computational mechanics, with a homogenization technique used to link the different length scales. In addition, the paper presents the features of some of the biggest integrated virtual testing machines developed for study of concrete, including a multiscale modeling scheme for the simulation of the constitutive properties of nanocomposites. Finally, the current challenges and future development potentials for virtual test machines are discussed.

  • This study provides a comprehensive experimental study on the dynamic characteristics of a flexible matrix composite(FMC) driveshaft. A primary objective is to verify the analytic results of the FMC drivetrain based on the equivalent complex modulus approach and the classical lamination theory. A test rig has been constructed, which consists of a FMC shaft, a foundation beam, bearings, external dampers and a driving motor. The frequency response functions and transient responses are obtained from the external excitation and the spin-up testings. It turns out that the analytic results are in good agreement with the experimental ones.

  • This research is to investigate the performance of a flexible matrix composite driveshaft with respect to shaft design parameters such as the number of layers, ply orientations, and material properties. A finite element formulation is utilized to estimate the allowable misalignment under given driving torque, the maximum temperature at steady states, and external damping for ensuring whirling stability under supercritical speed. Results indicate that the system performance can be greatly affected by the shaft laminate parameters, especially the ply orientations. Several sets of shaft parameters that will provide satisfactory overall system performance are derived.

  • In this paper, the basic study on the design of the flexible keel of the energy-storage prosthetic foot was performed in order to Improve the walking performance and Increase the activities of the below knee amputees. Based on the analysis of the anthropometric data and the normal gait on two dimensional sagittal plane available In the literature, we presented a model of the basic structure of the flexible keel of the prosthetic foot. The model of the basic structure was composed of the simple beams, and linear rotational spring and damper. Laminated carbon fiber-reinforced composites were selected as the material of the basic structure model of the flexible keel In order to apply the high strength and light weight materials to the basic structure of the flexible keel of the prosthetic foot. The recoverable strain energy In response to the change of beam shape was calculated bur the finite element analysis and it was suggested that the change of beam shape could be the design variable in flexible keel design. The simulation process was systematically designed by using orthogonal array table in order to design the flexible keel structure which could store the more recoverable strain energy. finite element analysis was carried but according to the design of simulations by using the finite element program ABAQUS and the flexible keel structure of the energy-storage prosthetic foot was obtained from the analysis of variance(ANOVA). The dynamic simulation model of the prosthetic walking using the flexible keel structure was made and the dynamic analysis was carried but during one walk cycle. Based on the above results, an effective design process was presented for the development of the prosthetic fool system.

  • Carbon nanotube buckypaper (CNTs-BP)/thermoplastic polyurethane (PU) elastomer composites were successfully fabricated. The CNTs-BP/PU nanocomposites exhibited simultaneous improvements in both tensile modulus and strength by 1360 and 430%, respectively, as compared to pure PU. Possible reinforcing mechanisms were evidenced by SEM analyses and tensile tests. The CNTs-BP/PU nanocomposites can be potentially used as an inter-reinforcing agent in ultra-lightweight, high-strength aircraft, carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics, etc.

  • Flexibility of a transparent device has been required in accordance with miniaturization and mobilization needs in recent industry. The most representative material used as a transparent electrode is indium tin oxide (ITO). However, a couple of disadvantages of ITO are the exhaustion of natural resource of indium and its inflexibility due to inorganic substance. To overcome the limit of ITO, a variety of alternative materials have been researched on development of transparent electrodes and its properties through composite materials. In this review, we classify some of emerged materials with their general studies.

  • 소프트 로봇의 수요와 관심이 증가함에 따라 생체 모방형 액추에이터 연구가 큰 관심을 받고 있다. 액추에이터란 외부 에너지를 기계적인 동작으로 변환하는 장치이며, 재료 자체가 유연하여 부드러운 움직임을 재현할 수 있는 소프트 액추에이터의 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 고분자 연성 재료 중에 하나인 하이드로겔은 90% 이상이 물로 구성되어 있기 때문에 생체 친화적이면서 동시에 환경 친화적인 재료이며 이를 기반으로 한 액추에이터 연구가 새로이 각광받고 있다. 최근에는 하이드로겔 액추에이터의 성능 향상을 위해 나노재료를 하이드로겔에 첨가하는 연구가 진행되고 있으며, 나노재료가 갖는 고유의 특성을 활용함으로써 하이드로겔 액추에이터의 자극 감응성 향상, 변형 방향의 제어, 높은 변형 효율 그리고 기계적 물성 증가가 보고되고 있다. 이는 헬스케어를 위한 웨어러블 장치, 재활을 목적으로 한 인공 근육 등에 적용이 가능하다. 본 기고문에서는 자극 감응성 고분자와 나노재료를 이용한 하이드로겔 액추에이터 연구에 대해 자극(전기장, 빛, 열, 자기장)의 종류에 따라 분류하여 소개하고, 합성 전략 및 구동 원리에 대해 간략하게 설명하고자 한다.

Mechanical Performance Study of Flexible Protection Tube for Submarine Cables (해저케이블용 유연보호튜브의 기계적 성능 연구)

  • Demand for submarine cable is increasing due to advances in submarine power transmission technology and submarine cable manufacturing technology. Submarine cable use various types of protective equipment to prevent problems such as high maintenance costs in the event of cable damage and power outages during maintenance periods. Among them, flexible protection tube is a representative protective equipment to protect cables and respond to external forces such as waves and current. The flexible protection tube is made of polyurethane 85A hyperelastic material, so the calculation of mechanical behavior is carried out using mechanical properties based on experimental results. In this study, a study was conducted to determine the bending performance and tensile performance of flexible protection tube through analytical methods. The physical properties obtained through the multiaxial tensile test of polyurethane 85A were used for the analysis. Bending and tensile performance were determined for the maximum bending moment standard of 15 kN·m and the tensile load standard of 50 kN. As a result, it was confirmed that when the maximum bending moment of 15 kN·m of the flexible protection tube occurred, the bending performance of the MBR was secured at 13 m and when a tensile load of 50 kN, it was applied the maximum vertical displacement was 968 mm, confirming that the tensile performance was secured.
