Measurements of the Faraday rotation and magnetization of terbium-doped Hoya FR5 glass and cerium-doped Hoya FR4 glass have been made as a function of temperature T in the range 4.2 K -10 K and of magnetic field H of up to 80 kG at the $Ar^+$ laser wavelength of 514.5nm. The saturations of magnetization and Faraday rotation above H/T> $5kG.K^{-1}$ can be analyzed by the quantum theory of paramagnetism. Calculated parameters show that the large Verdet constant of $Ce^{3+}$ glass is due to the effective $4f\rightarrow5d$ electric dipole transition effect and that of $Tb^{3+}$ glass is due to the magnetization effect.effect.

Curing behavior and glass transition temperatures of epoxy resins into which reactive diluents were added to control processability were investigated. Heat of cure generated of the epoxy resin was reduced with butyl glycidyl ether(BGE) and phenyl glycidyl ether(PGE) contents. $T_g$ of the resin was decreased with the amount of reactive diluents and it was attributed to increased molecular weight between crosslink points. Cure kinetics of the resins was studied employing autocatalytic reaction model and found that reaction constants decreased as the contents of reactive diluent was increased.
The cure behavior of commercial epoxy molding compounds (EMC) commonly used for IC package was studied at constant cure temperatures as well as at constant heating rates using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheometer, and dielectric analyzer (DEA). The cure kinetics were obtained using autocatalytic reaction model according to the Ryan Dutta method after assuming m+n equal to 2. The prediction of reaction rates by the model equation corresponded well to experimental data at all temperatures except for 10$0^{\circ}C$. The phase transitions such as gelation and vitrification occurred during network formation. At each isothermal cure temperature, $T_{g}$ was measured in accordance with cure time, and the vitrification point was attained when $T_{g}$ was equal to $T_{cure}$. The temperature dependence of gel points and vitrification points showed good agreement with Arrhenius relation. DEA using parallel plate electrode was effective for the monitoring of EMC cure. we knew that if the resin systems are materials of comparable quality, $_{gel}$$T_{g}$ is constant regardless of accelerator concentration in TTT (Time-Temperature-Transformation) diagram.
To evaluate the flexural deformation and strength of composite motor case above the glass transition temperature$(T_g),\;170^{\circ}C$, of resin material, a finite element analysis(FEA) model in which material non-linearity and progressive failure mode were considered was proposed. The laminated flexural specimens which have the same lay-up and thickness as the composite motor case were tested by 4-point bending test to verify the validity of FEA model. Also. mechanical properties in high temperature were evaluated to obtain the input values for FEA. Because the material properties related to resin material were highly deteriorated in the temperature range beyond $T_g$, the flexural stiffness and strength of laminated flexural specimen in $200^{\circ}C$ were degraded by also $70\%\;and\;80\%$ in comparison with normal temperature results. Above $T_g$, the failure mode was changed from progressive failure mode initiated by matrix cracking at $90^{\circ}$ ply in bottom side and terminated by delamination at the center line of specimen to fiber compressive breakage mode at top side. From stress analysis, the progressive failure mechanism was well verified and the predicted bending stiffness and strength showed a good agreement with the test results.
The thermal properties and crystallization behaviors of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) were investigated by controlling the annealing conditions of PET sample, such as relative humidity, temperature, and time. The variations of moisture content, glass transition temperature ($T_g$) and cold crystallization temperature ($T_{\propto}$) were examined after annealing the PET sample. Subsequently crystallization process was performed with the annealed PET specimen, and then the degree of crystallinity and heat distortion temperature (HDT) of variously crystallized PET specimen were examined. Residual stress relaxation in the injection molded PET sample after annealing was also observed through polarized films. Moisture content in the PET specimen increased up to 6000 ppm with increasing the relative humidity, temperature, and time of annealing. $T_g$ and $T_{\propto}$ of the annealed PET specimen decreased with increasing moisture content. The degree of crystallinity increased as increasing moisture content in the PET specimen. However for same moisture content, the degree of crystallinity varied with annealing conditions. The relaxations of residual stress in the PET sample differed from annealing conditions, and the maximum degree of crystallinity increased with decreasing residual stress in the PET sample.
The solubility of methane in poly(n-butyl methacrylate)(PnBMA) was determined at pressures up to 35 atm. These measurements were made by volumetric technique in the temperature range from -10 to 30$^{\circ}$C. The solubility was found to be a nonlinear function of the applied pressure and could be satisfactorily described by dual-mode sorption model at temperatures below the glass txansition temperature($T_g$) of the polymer. The Langmuir capacity constant decreased with increasing temperature and vanished near the glass transition temperature of PnBMA. The solubility isotherm became linear at temperatures above the glass transition temperature of PnBMA. The temperature dependence of the dual-mode sorption parameters was also discussed.
Isothermal physical aging of a glass fiber/epoxy composite was examined at different aging temperatures ($T_a$) and degrees of conversion (monitored by the glass transition temperature, $T_g$) by means of the TBA torsion pendulum technique. The range of aging temperature was from 10 to $130^{\circ}C$ : the conversion was systematically changed from $T_g$=$76^{\circ}C$ to $T_g$=$177^{\circ}C$ (fully crosslinked). The effect of isothermal physical aging was manifested as perturbations of the modulus and mechanical loss vs. temperature in the vicinity of $T_a$ for all conversions. The rate of isothermal physical aging determined from the change of modulus with aging time at fixed aging temperature decreased and then increased with increasing conversion below T$_{a}$=9$0^{\circ}C$. There exists a superposition in aging rate vs. ($T_g$ -$T_a$) by shifting horizontally and vertically. This implies that the physical aging process is independent of the change of chemical structure as conversion proceeds. It has been found that water absorbed at the aging temperature below $70^{\circ}C$ during isothermal physical aging lowers the apparent aging rate. It is due to the absorbed water molecules forming strong polar interactions with hydroxyl group on network chain and reducing the segmental mobility during the physical aging.g.

In this paper, we present modeling and simulation of microlens formation by means of a deep X-ray lithography followed by a thermal treatment of a PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate) sheet. According to this modeling, X-ray irradiation causes the decrease of molecular weight of PMMA, which in turn decreases the glass transition temperature and consequently causes a net volume increase during the thermal cycle resulting in a swollen microlens. In this modeling, the free volume theory including the relaxation process during the cooling process was considered. The simulation results indicate that the modeling in this study is able to predict the fabricated microlens shapes and the variation pattern of the maximum heights of microlens which depends on the conditions of the thermal treatment. The prediction model could be applied to optimization of microlens fabrication process and to designing a micro mold insert for micromolding processes.
Poly(trimethylene terephthalate)(PTT) fibers were treated by passing on the plate heater to study the annealing effect on the change of morphological structure and physical properties. In the X-ray diffraction curves of PTT annealed, a sharp peak at 2$\theta$=15.6$^{\circ}$ appeared and the peak intensity became stronger with the increase of annealing temperature and time. This peak was based on the (010) plane of PTT crystals. The crystallinity determined by density measurement was also increased by annealing. With the increases of temperature and time, the dynamic viscoelastic behaviors were shown to be a large reduction in T(tan $\delta$$_{max}$). The birefringence and $T_g$ were also reduced, but the melting temperature was the same. These results mean that the molecular chains in armorphous region are transfered into the crystalline legion, making the remained chains relaxed during annealing at tensionless state.
A multilayer-structure material containing ductile and brittle layer simultaneously was examined and compared with a single layer material using fracture mechanical properties. We found that impact strength of multilayer structure material was considerably higher than single layer's and toughness was enhanced by about two times or higher in similar glass transition temperature($T_g$) region and the same dimension. The superposition principle of impact pulse was used for interpretation of kinetic stress wave as a high-velocity crack proceeds in the plastic. It was understood that the optimum condition of ductile/brittle thickness ratio could be designed in the final toughness enhancement of multilayer.
