In this work, pitch-carbonized glass fibers were prepared for reinforcement of composites. The influence of acid functionalization of the fibers on the morphological, mechanical, and thermal properties of fiber-reinforced epoxy matrix composites was investigated. The acid functionalization of the fibers led to 10 and 150% increases in the mechanical and thermal properties, respectively, as compared to carbon fiber-reinforced composites. This can be attributed to the superior orientation of fiber structures and good interfacial interactions between fillers and epoxy matrix, resulting in enhanced degree of dispersion and formation of thermally conductive paths in the functionalized composites.

This paper describes the evaluations of tension-compression fatigue characteristics and life for glass fiber/epoxy laminate composite applied to railway bogie to reduce weight. Test samples of tension-compression fatigue were composed of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness woven laminate composites with different stacking sequence of warp-direction, fill-direction and ${\pm}45^{\circ}$-direction. The tension-compression fatigue test was conducted with stress ratio (R) of -1 and frequency of 5Hz. Goodman diagram were used to evaluate the fatigue characteristics and life of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite. Anti-buckling jig was designed to prevent buckling of specimen under compression load. The test results showed that the fatigue characteristics of glass fiber/epoxy 4-harness satin woven laminate composite with stacking sequence of warp-direction had a good performance in comparison with that of SM490 used to conventional metal railway bogie.
Interfacial evaluation of glass fiber reinforced carbon nanotube (CNT)-epoxy nanocomposite was investigated by micromechanical technique in combination with wettability test. The contact resistance of the CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was measured using a gradient specimen, containing electrical contacts with gradually-increasing spacing. The contact resistance of CNT-epoxy nanocomposites was evaluated by using the two-point method rather than the four-point method. Due to the presence of hydrophobic domains on the heterogeneous surface, the static contact angle of CNT-epoxy nanocomposite was about $120^{\circ}$, which was rather lower than that for super-hydrophobicity. For surface treated-glass fibers, the tensile strength decreased dramatically, whereas the tensile modulus exhibited little change despite the presence of flaws on the etched fiber surface. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between the etched glass fiber and the CNT-epoxy nanocomposites increased due to the enhanced surface energy and roughness. As the thermodynamic work of adhesion, $W_a$ increased, both the mechanical IFSS and the apparent modulus increased, which indicated the consistency with each other.
A small diameter steel-ball impact experiment was performed to study the impact resistance of the surface of glass plates bonded with glass fabric/epoxy lamina. Five kinds of materials were used in this study: soda-lime glass plates, glass/epoxy lamina(one layer)-bonded and unbonded glass plates, glass/epoxy lamina(three layers)-bonded and unbonded glass plates. The range of impact velocity was 40 120m/s. The maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were measured on the back surface of glass plates. With increasing impact velocity, various types of surface cracks such as ring, cone, radial and lateral cracks took place in the interior near the impacted site of glass plates. The cracks drastically decreased with glass/epoxy lamina coating. The surface fracture behavior could be evaluated using the maximum stress and the absorbed fracture energy.
Fiber orientation effects on the impact surface fracture of the glass plates coated with the glass fiber/epoxy lamina layer were investigated using a small-diameter steel-ball impact experiment. Four kinds of materials were used: soda-lime glass plates, unidirectional glass fiber/epoxy layer(one ply, two plies)-coated, crossed glass tiber/epoxy layer (two plies)-coated glass plates. The maximum stress and absorbed fracture energy were measured on the back surface of glass plates during the impact. With increasing impact velocity, various surface cracks such as ring, cone, radial and lateral cracks appeared near the impacted site of glass plates. Cracks in the plate drastically diminished by glass fiber coating. The tiber orientation guided the directions of delamination and plastic deformation zones between the tiber layer and the glass plate. Impact surface-fracture indices expressed in terms of the maximum stress and absorbed energy could be used as an effective evaluation parameter of the surface resistance.

In this study, An optimization code that can design microwave absorbing composite laminates is developed, and 3-layered microwave absorbing composite laminates are developed by optimizing the thickness of each layer. The layers are 3 different composite laminates. Many variables including lay-up angles of electromagnetically orthotropic composite layer can be considered in this code. The developed laminate is composed of an impedance matching layer of glass/epoxy fabric laminate, a glass/epoxy fabric laminate layer containing aluminum filler and carbon/epoxy fabric laminate layer. Permittivities of the materials are obtained using a network analyzer and a coaxial air line.
