Oil spill of Hebei spirit and Change of Manila Clam, Ruditapes philippinarum beds in the West coast of Korea (Hebei spirit호 유류유출과 서해안 바지락 양식장의 변화)

  • After oil outlow accident of Hebei spirit in December 7, 2007, the motality of manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum in the west coast of South Korea, was significantly increased from 9.2% in April, 2007 to 22.4% in April 2008. Although the mortality was about 10% in the tidal flat of Geunso Bay and Cheonsu Bay, Incheon and Gyeonggi-do, the values was significantly high about 30% in water coast of Taean, Boryeong and Seosan in where the spilled oil was getting into fishery zone. However, the mortality in water coast of Taean, Boryeong and Seosan was decreased from 22.4% in 2008 to 6.0% in 2009. Also, we found that the mortality in contaminated and non-contaminated water zones was both slightly increased from 6.0 in 2009 to 8.6% in 2010, Therefore, these results are indicating that the significant high mortality observed in water coast of Taean, Boryeong and Seosan at April, 2008 was due to the crude oil accident outflow from tanks of Hebei spirit. Although the mortality of manila clam was significantly decreased in middle west coast of South Korea after the accident of Hebei spirit in December, 2007, the annual production of manila clam in South Korea was sustainedly from 27,459 ton in 2007, 36,302 ton in 2008, 40,392 ton in 2009, to 36,248 ton in 2010. In the production of manila clam by regional groups, the amount in sea coast of Chungnam, where was damaged by crude oil, was significantly decreased from 10,598 ton in 2007 to 5,048 ton in 2008, but then was significantly increased to 7,065 ton in 2009, and to 12,921 ton in 2010. However, in sea coast of Jeonnam that was not damaged by crude oil, the amount was significantly increased from 1,252 ton in 2007 to 12,248 ton in 2008, but then was significantly decreased to 9,566 ton in 2009, and to 2,770 ton in 2010. Therefore the results are suggesting that a increasing of the total annual production of manila clam in South Korea in 2008 when was 1 year after the oil accident of Hebei spirit was due to increasing of clam production in a coast of Jeonnam in where was not damaged by crude oil.

Bioremediation Efficiency of Oil-Contaminated Soil using Microbial Agents (토양미생물 복원제를 이용한 유류로 오염된 토양의 복원)

  • Oil pollution was world-wide prevalent treat to the environment, and the physic-chemical remediation technology of the TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbon) contaminated soil had the weakness that its rate was very slow and not economical. Bioremediation of the contaminated soil is a useful method if the concentrations are moderate and non-biological techniques are not economical. The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of additives on TPH degradation in a diesel contaminated soil environment. Six experimental conditions were conduced; (i) diesel contaminated soil, (ii) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives, (iii) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives and the mixture was titrated to the end point of pH 7 with NaOH, (iv) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives and accelerating agents and (v) diesel contaminated soil treated with microbial additives and accelerating agents, and the mixture was titrated to the end point of pH 7 with NaOH. After 10 days, significant TPH degradation (67%) was observed in the DSP-1 soil sample. The removal of TPH in the soil sample where microbial additives were supplemented was 38% higher than the control soil sample during the first ten days. The microbial additives were effective in both the initial removal rate and relative removal efficiency of TPH compared with the control group. However, various environmental factors, such as pH and temperature, also affected the activities of microbes lived in the additives, so the pH calibration of the oil-contaminated soil would help the initial reduction efficiency in the early periods.

An Empirical Analysis on the Price Effects of Fuel Surcharge Collusion in Air Cargo Industry (항공화물 유류할증료 담합의 가격효과에 대한 실증분석)

  • This paper estimates the effects of Air Cargo companies' fuel surcharge collusion on the final airfreight prices. We show that the final prices have not been generally higher than the 'but-for prices,' and even been significantly lower for some companies. We analyze the possible reasons for such findings, and conclude that the collusion on fuel surcharges has not been successful due to the oil price hike in the cartel period. We also find that the oil price elasticities of fuel surcharges are significantly lower than 1.

A Study on Determining Economical Speed of Diesel Freight Locomotive (화물열차의 경제속도 결정에 관한 연구)

  • Rail transport has been considered an environmental-friendly transport mode compared with other transport modes such as ship, truck, and aircraft. However, air pollutions emitted by diesel locomotives have emerged as social issues. In addition, the railway industry may not be able to avoid a duty of alleviating greenhouse gases emission owing to the Korean government policies for green growth which is an economic paradigm that simultaneously pursues growth and environmental improvement. Moreover, rising oil prices has burdened a train operating company. The purpose of this paper is to develop a methodology of determining an economical speed of diesel freight locomotive from the viewpoint of the train operating company. In the methodology, we first define an operational cost function based on various cost factors and then suggest formula to calculate an economical speed of diesel freight locomotive. To estimate the influence of cost factors such as diesel price, carbon taxes, and time costs on the speed of diesel freight locomotive, sensitivity analysis was conducted.

  • The Oceanic ecosystem destruction caused by Water-Bloom, Jellyfish development, and Oil contamination in nation's waters becomes serious problem. For these reasons, the oceanic conditions are observed in air and on the water using helicopters and vessels. But, employing helicopters and vessels are limitted on a budget, and weather conditions. To overcome these problems, an unattended automated monitoring system not only gather all sorts of the oceanic condition in spite of bad weather, but save labor and oil costs. For each sensor connected in network and radiodetermination, location of sensors are verified in the tidal water to improve gathering informations.

  • 본 연구에서는 유류 오염토양 복원을 위한 효율적인 이동형 연속식 토양세척 장비를 개발하여 현장 적용 가능성을 검토하였다. 진세척조는 내부에 스크류를 설치함으로써 주입되는 오염토양과 세척용액의 기계적 교반에 의한 원활한 접촉과 토양간의 마찰 등으로 인하여 토양으로부터 오염물질의 탈착이 효과적으로 이루어지도록 하였다. 전세척조 외부에 위치한 주세척조는 전세척조에서 탈착된 오염물질과 미세입자를 원 토양으로부터 효율적으로 분리하기 위한 헹굼작용과 배출부에서 미세입자를 포함하는 세척 유출수가 효율적으로 분리 배출이 될 수 있도록 설계.제작하였다. 현장 적용 실험결과, 설계 목표치인 토양 주입 속도 15m$^3$/day, 계면활성제 POE$_{5}$POE$_{14}$의 비 1:1 (농도 0.1%), 세척수/토양 비 (부피/중량비) 1, 전세척조 회전속도 18rpm. 주세척조 회전속도 5rpm의 운전조건에서 90% 이상의 높은 세척효율을 나타내었다.

  • 본 논문에서는 유류 오염물의 흡수 반응이 가능한 반응재료에 대하여 지중 구조 재료로서의 적용성 검토를 목적으로 배합조건에 따른 다짐시험을 실시하였다. 다짐시험 결과, 주요 반응물질이 최적함수비에 미치는 영향은 미미하였으나, 최대건조단위중량의 영향인자로 평가되었다.

Aircraft fueling optimization model under a fueling cost differentiation (급유비용 차별하의 항공기 급유 최적화 모형)

  • Aircraft fuel cost is the largest airline expenses in airlines who play a major role in air transportation system. Airlines have been making a great effort to save fuel as much as they can. Among these efforts, the systematic fueling strategy has been taken a growing attention since it is recognized as a very cost-effective fuel management strategy. The systematic fueling strategy is the fuel saving strategy in which extra amount of fuel is loaded to utilize the fueling cost differentiation among the cities where the aircraft operate. In this paper, the aircraft fueling optimization model is proposed. The proposed model is to calculate precise amount of loaded fuel to minimize overall fuel cost assuming that the aircraft routing for all aircrafts and fueling cost in all airports where the aircraft fly are given. Compared with heuristic fueling strategy, the result of the proposed model is promising. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed model plays a major role in fuel management strategy in airline operation.

Ingestion Responses of the Copepod Tigriopus japonicus Exposed to the Water Accommodated Fraction (WAF) and Chemically Enhanced WAF (CEWAF) of Crude Oil (유류 오염에 의한 요각류 Tigriopus japonicus의 섭식반응)

  • This study examined the feeding response of the harpacticoid copepod, Tigriopus japonicus exposed to WAF or CEWAF to understand whether decreased feeding of the copepod by oil exposure is induced by food avoidance or medium toxicity. In the medium without WAF, there was no difference in the ingestion rate of the copepod among all polluted diets those were exposed to different concentrations of WAF. The present of WAF in the medium however caused a decrease in the ingestion rate at 100% WAF treatment. In the mixed diet treatment with adhesive diatoms and Tetraselmis suecica, T. japonicus had significantly lower ingestion rate on adhesive diatoms than on others in the medium with CEWAF. As a result, decreased ingestion of T. japonicus by oil exposure was caused by oil toxicity in medium, which may not have directly related with an avoidance of polluted food organisms.
