Using a Rheometrics Fluids Spectrometer(RFS II), the steady shear flow and the small-amplitude dynamic viscoelastic properties of three kinds of semi-solid food materials(mayonnaise, tomato ketchup, and wasabi) have been measured over a wide range of shear rates and angular frequencies. The shear rate dependence of steady flow behavior and the angular frequency dependence of dynamic viscoelastic behavior were reported from the experimentally measured data. In addition, some viscoplastic flow models with a yield stress term were employed to make a quantitative evaluation of the steady flow behavior, and the applicability of these models was also examined in detail. Furthermore, the correlations between steady shear flow(nonlinear behavior) and dynamic viscoelastic(linear behavior)properties were discussed using the modified power-law flow equations. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows : (1) Semi-solid food materials are regarded as viscoplastic fluids having a finite magnitude of yield stress, and their flow behavior shows shear-thinning characteristics, exhibiting a decrease in steady flow viscosity with increasing shear rate. (2) The Herschel-Bulkley, Mizrahi-Berk, and Heinz-Casson models are all applicable to describe the steady flow behavior of semi-solid food materials. Among these models, the Heinz-Casson model has the best validity. (3) Semi-solid food materials show a stronger shear-thinning behavior at shear rate region higher than a critical shear rate where a more progressive structure breakdown takes place. (4) Both the storage and loss moduli are increased with increasing angular frequency, but they have a slight dependence on angular frequency. The elastic behavior is dominant to the viscous behavior over a wide range of angular frequencies. (5) All of the steady flow, dynamic, and complex viscosities are well satisfied with the power-law model behavior. The relationships between steady shear flow and dynamic viscoelastic properties can well be described by the modified forms of the power-law flow equations.

Shock tube flow measurement has been often hampered a finite opening time of diaphragm, but there is no systematic work to investigate its effect on the shock tube flow. In the present study, both the experimental and computational works have been performed on the shock tube flows at low pressure ratios. The computational analysis has been performed using the two-dimensional, unsteady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations, based upon a TVD MUSCL finite difference scheme. It is known that the present computational results reproduce the experimental data with good accuracy and simulate successfully the process of diaphragm opening as a function of time. The concept of an imaginary center is introduced to quantify the non-centered expansion wave due to a finite opening time of diaphragm. The results obtained show that the diaphragm opening time is reduced as the initial pressure ratio of shock tube increases, leading to the effect of a finite opening time of diaphragm to be more remarkable at low pressure ratios.

The flow through multistage turbomachinery is affected by the interaction between a rotor and a stator. The interaction is due to the inviscid potential effect and viscous effect between closely spaced rotor and stator airfoils. Three-dimensional, unsteady, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with a standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model are solved using a non-staggered grid system. This method is applied to the flow through a multistage compressor measured by Stauter et al. The results have shown strong interaction between the rotating and stationary flow field. The decay of rotor wake and the pressure profiles agree very well with experimental data. The wake produced by rotor causes unsteady pressure on the surface of a stator. The rotor/stator interaction produces the unsteady pressure force on the rotor and stator blades.

Flow characteristics of two-dimensional closed square cavities near unsteady critical Reynolds numbers were studied numerically at four Reynolds numbers : $8{\times}10^3,\;8.5{\times}10^3,\;9{\times}10^3\;and\;9.5{\times}10^3.$ A convection conservative difference scheme based upon SOLA to maintain the nearly 2nd-order spatial accuracy is adopted on irregular grid formation. Irregular grid number is $80{\times}80$ and its minimum size is about 1/400 of the cavity height(H) and its maximum is about 1/53 H. The result shows that the critical Reynolds number indicating the emergence of flow wnsteadiness is ranging from Re=$8{\times}10^3\;to\;8.5{\times}10^3$ and their flow patterns reveal periodic fluctuation during transient and fully developed stages. But macroscopic flow behavior in terms of instantaneous and time-mean characteristics represent remarkable difference.

Impeller blades in the centrifugal compressor are subjected to static loads due to the high-speed rotation and steady aerodynamic forces. At the same time, aerodynamic excitations by the interaction between the impeller and the diffuser vanes(DV) periodically excite the impeller blades in resonant conditions, which may lead to high cycle fatigue (HCF) and eventually result in failure of the blades. In order to predict the structural response accurately, the aerodynamic excitation and the major resonant conditions were predicted by performing the unsteady flow analysis and modal analysis using ANSYS. Next, a unidirectional forced vibration analysis was performed by using fluid-structure interaction (FSI) method, and the safety of HCF was evaluated based on the results.

A steady prediction method is presented to compute dynamic damping coefficients for axisymmetric projectiles. Viscous flow analysis is essential to the steady method using a zero-spin coning motion in the inertial coordinate frame. The present method is applied to compute the pitching moment and the pitch-damping moment coefficients for the Army-Navy Spinning Rocket. The results are in good agreement with the parabolized Navier-Stokes data, range data, and unsteady prediction data. Predictions for Secant-Ogive-Cylinder configurations are performed to investigate effects of afterbody geometries. To investigate the geometrical effect and flow physics, the longitudinal developments of the coefficients are examined in detail.

Euler codes or Navier-Stokes codes for compressible flows suffer severe degradation in convergence as Mach number approaches zero. The convergence problem arose from the wide disparity in characteristic speeds can be solved using preconditioning methods without large modifications. In this paper, a preconditioned RANS(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) solver is developed for analysis of low Mach number flows. In order to validate the method, computational examples are chosen and the results are compared with the experimental data and the existing computed results showing a good accuracy and convergence characteristics for steady inviscid, laminar and turbulent flows at low Mach number.

Of late, the thrust vectoring control, using fluidic co-flow and counter-flow concepts, has been received much attention since it not only improves the maneuverability of propulsive engine but also reduces an additional material load due to the trailing control wings, which in turn reduce the aerodynamic drag. However, the control effects are not understood well since the flow field involves very complicated non: physics such as shock wave/boundary layer interaction, separation and significant unsteadiness. Existing data are not enough to achieve the effectiveness and usefulness of the thrust vectoring control, and systematic work is required for the purpose of practical applications In the present study, computational study has been performed to investigate the effects of the thrust vector control using the fluidic co-and counter-flow concepts. The results obtained show that, for a given pressure ratio, the thrust deflection angle has a maximum value at a certain suction flow rate, which is at less than $5\%$ of the mass flow rate of the primary jet. With a longer collar, the same vector angle is achievable with smaller mass flow rate.
