An Experimental Study of the Swiriling Flow and Heat Transfer Downstream of an Abrupt Explansion in a Circular Pipe with Uniform Heat Flux (선회류를 동반한 급확대 원관내에서의 열전달 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • 실험 데이터는 급확대비 3:1 팽창의 시험관에서의 실험결과를 나타내고 있으며, 실험에 이용된 동작유체로써는 공기가 사용되었다. 입구관에서 레이놀즈수는 60,000으로부터 120,000까지 변하게 하였고, 스월강도는 0으로부터 16까지 변화되게 하였다. 균일한 열 플럭스 경계조건이 사용되었는데, 그 결과 관벽온도 및 체적온도는 24$^{\circ}C$로부터 71$^{\circ}C$까지에 걸쳐 나타났다. 플롯상에 국소 Nusselt수는 최대 열전달점에서 정점을 이루는 모습을 보여 주고 있다. 스월강도가 0으로부터 최대값으로 증가 되었을때, 최고 Nusselt수의 위치는 시험관에서 4로부터 1스텝 하이트로 변경되는 것이 조사되었다. 이러한 최대 Nusselt수의 상류부 이동은 완전 발달된 유동에서의 값보다 2.2배에서 8.8배나 많은 그의 크기를 증가시킨다고 할 수 있다.

New Constitutive Equations for Asphalt Binder Fluids (아스팔트바인더 유체를 위한 새로운 특성방정식)

  • Almost most of literatures treat behaviors of asphalt binders as a homogeneous single-phase fluid, but this generalization turns out to be a serious mistake. This study introduces all the characteristic equations for asphalt binders, which are modified or unmodified. Especially, characteristic equations for a unhomogeneous multi-phase fluid for modified asphalts is first time proposed. Characteristics of each equations introduced are explained by employing dynamic shear testing data actually measured for specific asphalt binders. Differences of moving behaviors and characteristic equations between a homogeneous single-phase and a unhomogeneous multi-phase fluid are emphasized. These differences help us understand which characteristic equations must be used for a given asphalt fluid and what kinds of properties must be investigated for analysis of a specific asphalt binder. Results of this study provide how to analyse modified and unmodified asphalts, and informations necessary for binder grading.

An Experimental Study on the Transitional Flows in a Concentric Annu- lus with Rotating Inner Cylinder (안쪽축이 회전하는 환형관내 천이유동에 관한 연구)

  • The present experimental and numerical investigations are performed on the characteristics of transitional flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one rotating. The pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients have been measured for the fully devel-oped flow of water and that of 0.2% CMC-water solution at a inner cylinder rotational speed of 0∼600 rpm, respectively. The transitional flow has been examined by the measurement of pressure losses to reveal the relation of the Reynolds and Rossby numbers with the skin-friction coefficients. The occurrence of transition has been checked by the gradient changes of pressure losses and skin-friction coefficients with respect to the Reynolds numbers. The increasing rate of skin-friction coefficient due to the rotation is uniform for laminar flow regime, whereas it is suddenly reduced for transitional flow regime and, then, it is gradually decreased for turbulent flow regime.

  • An experimental study was carried out in a vertical channel with square heat source by visualization equipment with laser apparatus. The image processing system consists of one commercial image board slit into a personal computer and 2-dimensional sheet light by Argon-Ion Laser with cylindrical lens and flow picture recording system. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system which adopted two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm. Heat source was uniform heat flux(5W). The obtained results show various flow patterns such as the kinetic energy distribution and the turbulent kinetic energy distribution.

  • This research represents the catalytic converter for application in the motorcycle. We have to consider about catalytic converter for reducing exhaust gas strength regarding the displacement volume enlargement. The catalytic converter has been widely used to satisfy the regulations of pollutant emissions from automobiles. Recently, all catalytic converter researches are about automobile. Study about motorcycle catalytic converter has not been conducted yet. In this study, flow uniformity and pressure distribution were simulated in the monolithic inlet of catalytic converter for motorcycle. Exhaust pulsation pressure was set as transient condition about. It was found that flow uniformity shown in base model (0.85) was lower than megaphone model (0.98).

  • Flow in the oxidizer manifold of a liquid rocket combustor has been analysed using an open source CFD toolbox, OpenFOAM. The applicability of OpenFOAM to the problems with complex geometries involving porous media zones for simulating the pressure drop induced by the injectors has been evaluated by performing turbulent, incompressible steady-state flow analysis. The usefulness and applicable area of the OpenFOAM as a design evaluation and analysis tool will be confirmed and enlarged by further evaluation with various computational cases representing major physical phenomena in rocket combustion devices.

  • An experimental study of jet impinging the non-isothermal heating surface with linear temperature gradient is conducted with the presentation of the turbulent flow characteristics and the heat transfer rate, represented by the Nusselt number. The jet Reynolds number ranges from 15,000 to 30,000, the temperature gradient of the plate is 2~4.2$^{\circ}C$/cm and the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) is from 2 to 10. The results show that the peak of heat transfer rate occurs at the stagnation point, and the heat transfer rate decreases as the radial distance from the stagnation point increases. A remarkable feature of the heat transfer rate is the existence of the second peak. This is due to the turbulent development of the wall jet. Maximum heat transfer rate occurs when the axial distance from the nozzle to nozzle diameter (H/D) is 6 or 8. The heat transfer rate can be correlated as a power function of Prandtl number, Reynolds number, the dimensionless nozzle to plate distance (H/D) and temperature gradient (dT/dr). It has been found that the heat transfer rate increases with increasing turbulent intensity. The wall jet is influenced by temperature gradient and the effect becomes more important at higher radii.

  • An experiment was performed to local heat transfer coefficient and Nusselt number in the circular duct of 180.deg. bend for Re=6*10$^{4}$, 8*10$^{4}$ and 1*10$^{5}$ at swirling flow and non-swirling flow conditions. The test tube with circular section was made by stainless which has curvature ratio 9.4. The wall of test tube was heated directly by electrical power to 3.51 kw and swirling motion of air was produced by a tangential inlet to the pipe axis at the 180 degree. Measurements of local wall temperatures and bulk mean temperature of air are made at four circumferential positions in the 16 stations. The wall temperatures show particularly reduced distribution curve at bend for non-swirling flow but this effect does not appear for swirling flow. Nusselt number distributions for swirling flow which was calculated from the measured wall and bulk temperatures were higher than that of non-swirling flow. Average Nusselt number of swirling flow increased about 90 ~ 100% than that of non-swirling flow whole through the test tube. The Nu/N $u_{DB}$ values at the station of 90.deg. for non-swirling flow and swirling flow are respectively about 2.5 and 4.8 at Re=6*10$^{4}$. Also that is good agreement with Said's result for non-swirling flow. flow.

The Numerical Study on the Flow Control of Ammonia Injection According to the Inlet NOx Distribution in the DeNOx Facilities (탈질설비 내에서 입구유동 NOx 분포에 따른 AIG유동제어의 전산해석적 연구)

  • The selective catalytic reduction system is a highly effective technique for the denitrification of the flue gases emitted from the industrial facilities. The distribution of mixing ratio between ammonia and nitrogen oxide at the inlet of the catalyst layers is important to the efficiency of the de-NOx process. In this study, computational analysis tools have been applied to improve the uniformity of NH3/NO molar ratio by controlling the flow rate of the ammonia injection nozzles according to the distribution pattern of the nitrogen oxide in the inlet flue gas. The root mean square of NH3/NO molar ratio was chosen as the optimization parameter while the design of experiment was used as the base of the optimization algorithm. As the inlet conditions, four (4) types of flow pattern were simulated; i.e. uniform, parabolic, upper-skewed, and random. The flow rate of the eight nozzles installed in the ammonia injection grid was adjusted to the inlet conditions. In order to solve the two-dimensional, steady, incompressible, and viscous flow fields, the commercial software ANSYS-FLUENT was used with the k-𝜖 turbulence model. The results showed that the improvement of the uniformity ranged between 9.58% and 80.0% according to the inlet flow pattern of the flue gas.

Numerical Study of Effect of DAF-Tank Shape on Flow Pattern in Separation Zone of Dissolved Air Flotation (용존공기부상조(DAF-tank)의 형상변화가 분리조(Separation Zone)의 내부 유동 패턴에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • We numerically simulated a dissolved air flotation (DAF) tank to predict the performance of the pilot facility. The flow was assumed to be two-dimensional and two-phase. The velocity distributions in the separation zones of differently shaped DAFs were compared to find the effect of the shape on the performance. The results showed that the typical flow pattern that appeared in a well-designed DAF-tank was generated in the separation zone of the base model. This flow pattern could be maintained while the baffle height was sufficiently tall regardless of the other geometric parameters. However, the baffle height and angle, the contact zone width, and the perforated plate affected the uniformity of the downward flow in the separation zone. Except for the baffle height, the base model used in this study showed a better uniformity of downward flow than did other models with different geometric parameters.
