  • Low-grade heats are wasted even though an amount of their energy is huge. In the small and medium industrial complex sites, large amount of low-grade thermal energy generated during the manufacturing process is wasted if it is not used directly for building heating or air-conditioning. In order to utilize this waste thermal energy more efficiently, organic Rankine cycle (ORC) was adopted. The range of operating temperature of ORC was set to $60^{\circ}C$ from $30^{\circ}C$ applicable low-temperature waste heat. A study was conducted to select an appropriate organic working fluid based on these operating conditions. More than 60 working fluids were screened. Eleven working fluids were selected based on the requirements as working fluid for ORC such as environmentally friendly, safety, and good operation on the expander. Finally, six working fluids were selected by considering the operating temperature ranges. Then, a cycle analysis was conducted with these six working fluids. As a results, R-245fa and R-134a appeared as appropriate working fluids for ORC operating at low-temperature condition based on the system efficiency and the turbine output power.

  • In this study, performances of the vane expander protype for micro organic Rankine cycle with refrigerant R134a as a working fluid have been analyzed. While operating organic Rankine cycle for analysing expander efficiencies such as overall efficiencies, volumetric efficiencies and mechanical efficiencies under $110^{\circ}C$ of expander inlet temperature, the power of the expander, inlet temperature of expander, inlet pressure of expander and the flow rate of the working fluid(refrigerant R134a) have been measured while varying the rotational speed of the expander. It was found that the more the expander revolution speed is high, the more the expander power, overall efficiencies and volumetric efficiencies are higher. In case of 500 rpm of rotational speed, overall efficiencies are 6~7% and in case of 1000 rpm, overall efficiencies are 11~12%. We have found that low volumetric efficiencies result in poor overall efficiencies.

  • This paper presents the process of turbine development for Organic Rankine Cycle(ORC) system. Development of turbine for ORC system is hot issue in the electric generation market due to the characteristic of organic refrigerant which the evaporate temperature is lower than general refrigerant. Recently, the industry have an interest about ORC turbine development in Korea, and they presented numerous research results. In developing the turbine, several processes can be considered. However, there was few document about ORC turbine development because of the trade secret. This paper can be used as a reference in developing ORC turbine.

  • In this work a thermodynamic performance analysis is carried out for a combined cycle consisted of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) and a LNG cycle. The combined system uses a low grade waste heat in the form of sensible energy and the LNG cold energy is used for power generation as well as for heat sink. The effects of the key parameters of th system such as turbine inlet pressure, condensation temperature and source temperature on the characteristics of system are throughly investigated. The simulation results show that the thermodynamic performance of the combined system can be significantly improved compared to the normal ORC which is not using the LNG cold energy.

  • Renewable Portfolio Standards was introduced into the system in Korea in 2012. Interest in the unutilized and renewable energy sources is increasing. and these being actively investigated. An organic rankine cycle has emerged as an alternative in order to take advantage of bio-gas engine heat of sewage treatment plants whose capacity is 1500 kW. The organic rankine cycle power system was simulated by a simulator which is a commercial program of power plant design and performance analysis. The biogas engine is operated by $460^{\circ}C$ and 2.7 kg/s flow rate in the sewage treatment plant. Working fluids(R-601a, R-123, R-245fa) are selected to use in ORC power system in this temperature range. It was the isopentane that is the best performance among three working fluids. It could be obtained net power of 163.1 kW and efficiency of 13.66% from isopentane in the simulation.

  • In this study, HFC ORCs (Organic Rankine Cycles) are investigated for a low-temperature geothermal power generation by a simulation method. A steady-state simulation model is developed to analyze and optimize cycle's performance. The model contains a turbine, a pump, an expansion valve and heat exchangers. The turbine and pump are modelled by an isentropic efficiency. Simulations were carried out for the given heat source and sink inlet temperatures, and given flow rate that is based on the typical power plant thermal-capacitance-rate ratio. 3 HFC fluids are considered as a candidate for a working fluid of low-temperature ORCs. In this study, all optimized HFC ORCs are shown to yield almost the same performance in terms of power for a low-temperature heat source of about $100^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper presents a thermodynamic performance analysis of regenerative organic Rankine cycle (ORC) using turbine bleeding to utilize low-grade finite thermal energy. Refrigerant R245fa was selected as the working fluid. Special attention is paid to the effects of the turbine bleeding pressure and the turbine bleed fraction on the thermodynamic performance of the system such as net power production and thermal efficiency. Results show that the thermal efficiency has an optimum value with respect to the turbine bleeding pressure and the net power production is lower than the basic ORC while the thermal efficiency is higher.

  • A series of numerical simulation has been carried out to study thermo-hydraulic characteristics of a primary surface type heat exchanger, which is designed for the evaporator and condenser of a geothermal ORC. Working fluid is geothermal water at hot side and R-245fa, which is a refrigerant designed for ORC, at cold side. Aspect ratio of the channel and Reynolds number are considered as design parameters. Nusselt number is presented for the Reynolds number ranging from 50 to 150 and compared to existing correlations. The result shows that higher aspect ratio channel gives better heat transfer performance within the range of investigation.

  • Low-grade waste heat has generally been discarded in industry due to lack of efficient recovery methods. In recent years, organic Rankine cycle(ORC) has become a field of intense research and appears as a promising technology for conversion of heat into useful work of electricity. In this work thermodynamic performance of ORC with superheating of vapor is comparatively assessed for various working fluids.
