  • Surfactant flushing for enhancing the removal of BTEX from contaminated sand/clay mixtures was investigated. Eight soil columns packed with relatively undisturbed BTEX contaminated soils, were leached with water, methyl alcohol and then flushed with surfactant with or without several additives. Initial concentrations of BTEX mixture range from 278mg/kg to 1975mg/kg. Initial BTEX removal efficiency was 98% when the contaminated soil was flushed with water of 850 pore volumes. Because of tailing effect, water flushing could not remove below 8mg/kg concentrations during the experimental period. Eventually, the most effective surfactant for flushing was turned out to be 4% SOFTANOL(equation omitted)-90 with 3% ethyl alcohol and 3% SXS. In interrupted flow conditions, the removal efficiency was 99.5% with the flushed water of 95 pore volumes. The BTEX mixture removed from the soil columns during the surfactant flushing ranges from 84.5% to 99.5% of the initial amount for both water leaching(850 pore volumes) and surfactant flushing(95-165 pore volumes), respectively. Test results indicated that surfactant flushing could enhance the removal of BTEX mixture from contaminated soils and could reduce the aqueous phase BTEX mixture concentration in leachate.

  • This study deals with the calibration of low-frequency water content reflectometer for measuring the volumetric water content of soils in landfill final cover layer, and the validity of calibrations was evaluated by electrical conductivity and index properties of the soils. Linear calibrations concerning volumetric water content to WCR period provided good agreement with the data. Analysis of the calibration data indicates that the slope of the calibration decreases as the electrical conductivity of the soil increases. Lower slopes correspond to soils with greater clay content, organic content, liquid limit, and plasticity index, which typically have higher electrical conductivity. It could be well explained that WCR can operate in a lower frequency range.

  • Mineral quantification was performed on sediments of the Ulleung basin by X-ray powder diffraction and the computer software based on Rietveld quantification method. The sediments are dominated by amorphous opal-A with quartz, feldspars, micas, clays, calcite, and pyrite. The opal-A shows iterative variation in abundance with increasing burial depth. In addition, the relative abundance of opal-A is coincident with abundance of organic carbon contents, indicating that the Ulleung sediment consists mostly of amorphous silica derived from organism in the pelagic environment. Upward increase in the abundance of opal-A is markedly shown in the cores located in the slope region. On the other hand, there is a distinct tendency that the abundance of calcite is inversely proportional to that of opal-A. This indicates that the abundance of opal-A increases during the rise of sea level. Also, the fall of sea level lowers the abundance of opal-A.

  • Sediment contains a high fraction of organic matter, high buffering capacity, and a large portion of fine grained particles such as silt and clay, which are major barriers to remove heavy metals from sediments. In this study, a lab-scale electrokinetic (EK) technique was applied to remove heavy metals effectively from marine sediment at a constant voltage gradient of 2 V/cm. A concentration of 0.1 M of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), citric acid (CA), $HNO_3$, and HCl were circulated in the cathode, and tap water was circulated in the anode. CA extracted 92.4% of Ni, 96.1% of Cu, 97.1% of Zn, and 88.1% of Pb from marine sediment. A higher voltage gradient enhanced the transport of citrate and EDTA into the sediment and, therefore, increased metal extraction from the marine sediment through a complexation reaction between metals and the chelates. Based on these results, the electrokinetic process using a high voltage gradient with EDTA and CA might be useful to extract heavy metals from marine sediment.

  • Polyurethane (PU) was prepared with the compositions of polytetramethylene glycol (PTMG) having two different molecular weight (250, 1000 g/mol). The optimum composition of PTMG 250/1000 was 60/40 based on the mechanical properties. PU/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared with several kinds of organoclay. The mechanical properties of nanocomposite prepared with 93A were considerable. The improvement in tensile strength and modulus for PU/organoclay nanocomposite with the application of ultrasound compared to the PU/organoclay nanocomposite without the application of ultrasound was factors of 1.2, and hardness (shore A type) increased from 90 to 95. The difference in thermal degradation was not observed. The results of transmission electron micrographs and X-ray measurements suggest that the intercalated organoclay in PU matrix was observed.

  • This study was made to find several significant relations among various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance. The alluvial clay samples were taken at the Daebul Reclaimed Tideland in Samhomyeon, Yeongamgun, Jeonranamdo. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1.Most samples belong to medium or high plastic, inorganic, silty clay(clay contents;32-64%, silt contents; 36-68%, sand contents; 0-3%). The specific gravities range from 2.70 to 2.73, the unit weights from 1.45 to 1. 75g/cm$^3$, the natural moisture contents from 45 to 77%, the liquid limits from 32 to 56%. It is certain that the foundation is weak because the natural moisture contents are much higher than the liquid limits. 2.It is known from the shear tests that the unconfined compression strenghs vary from 0.09 to 0. 38kg/cm2, the cohesions from 0.05 to 0. 21kg/cm2, the internal friction angles from 0 to 3˚. 3.The consolidation tests show that the initial void ratios range from 1.25 to 2.28, the compression indeices from 0.43 to 0.84, the preconsolidation loads from 0.21 to 0.74kg/cm$^2$. 4.Cone penetration resistances are usually less than 5kg/cm$^2$ from ground surface to the depth of about 8m, and from S to l0kg/cm$^2$ in the layer below about 8m to hard layer. 5.The cohesion and cone penetration resistance are in proportion to the depth of soil layer. 6.The correlations between various physical and mechanical properties including cone penetration resistance for the alluvial clay samples are as follows; a) Wn=0.944C+ l2.733 (r=0.829) b) LL=0. 728Cy+6. 991 (r=0. 873) c) PI=0.659Cy-8.168 (r=0.860) d) rt=0. 0077(272-Wn) =2.092-0. 0077Wn (r=0. 859) e) 60=0. 035wn-0 447 (r=0. 893) f) C=0.380qw+0.031 (r=0.816) g) qu=0.0707qc+0.029 (r=0.810) h) C=0.018Z+0.055 (r=O.802) I) qc=0. 415Z+1, 438 (r=0. 943)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effect of soil texture, organic matter, temperature and water regime on degradation of pretilachlor (2-chloro-2',6'-diethyl-N-(n-propoxyethyl) acetanilide) in the soils. The period of residual activity in soil treated with pretilachlor at rate of 60g a.i./10a was about 50 days. Also, period of reaching GR 50 value on the barnyard grass was about $25{\sim}27$ days. Degradation rate of pretilachlor in the sandy clay loam soil which has higher contents of organic matter and clay was faster than in the sandy loam soil. When organic matter was added to the soil, the rate of decomposition was accelerated. The faster degradation occurred under the $30^{\circ}C$ soil temperature by comparison under the $20^{\circ}C$. The rate of degradation in the soil was faster under the flooded conditions than under the wetted conditions.

  • Mobility reduction of 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) was tested by amending monopotassium phosphate (MKP) and montmorillonite to a firing range soil contaminated with TNT. While addition of MKP enhanced sorption of TNT on soil matrix, and combined use of MKP with montmorillonite significantly decreased desorption of TNT as well as remarkably increased the TNT sorption. Montmorillonite amendment by 5% of soil mass resulted in TNT desorption of 0.12 mg/kg from soil loaded with 9.93 mg/kg-TNT. The decrease of TNT desorption was proportional to the amount of montmorillonite amended. At 10 and 15% amendment, only 0.79 and 1.23 mg/kg-TNT was desorbed from 29.33 and 48.80 mg/kg-TNT. In addition, the leaching of TNT with synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) and hydroxypropyl-${\beta}$-cyclodextrin (HPCD) decreased, indicating that TNT in MKP/montmorillonite-treated soil became more stable and less leachable. The results demonstrate that addition of MKP and montmorillonite to TNT-contaminated soil reduces the mobility of TNT from soil not only by increasing TNT sorption, but also decreasing TNT desorption. It was found that MKP and montmorillonite amendments by 5 and 10% of soil mass, respectively, were optimal for reducing the mobility of soil TNT.

  • A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen mineralization in accordance with addition of calcium silicate and wollastonite on the fresh soil condition. Results are summarized as follows. 1. Nitrogen mineralization due to application of silica materials was rapidly occured in Saweon sand soil than in Honam clay soil. Also wollastonite application more stimulated the nitrogen mineralization than calcium silicate. 2. Silica material application enhanced loss of applied nitrogen by denitrification due to accelerate the nitrification in Suweon sand soil. This tendency was more severe in calcium silicate applicated treatment than in wallasnonite applicated. 3. From these results, nitrogen should be applicated with organic matter to improve the supply of nitrogen nutrient to plant when silica materials were applied.
