  • A number of experiments were conducted in order to investigate the COD removal rate according to the biofilm thickness in a Fluidized-Bed Biofilm Reactor(FBBR). The following conditions were fixed during the experiments: superficial upflow velocity was 0.47cm/sec, operating temperature was $22{\pm}1{\circ}C$ and pH was about $7{\pm}0.1$. The synthetic wastewater based on glucose was used as a substrate. The COD removal efficiencies were shown as 73% and 95%, respectively, when organic loading rate was increased from $10kgCOD\;/\;{\textrm{m}^3}$.day to $80kgCOD\;/\;{\textrm{m}^3}$.day. Andrew's model of substrate removal rate which was commonly used in fixed-biofilm reactor was transformed and applied in this FBBR experiment to predict substrate removal rate and gave 85% agreement with the experimental values.

  • This study investigated the floc structure and removal of turbidity and organic matter by alum coagulation. Results of this study indicated that sweep floc and charge neutralization area were shifted to more acidic region than that in the Amirtharajah's diagram. This was caused by organic matter present in the raw water. Removal regions of turbidity and organic matter were generally overlapped. However, organic matters was removed better at lower pH than turbidity. Floc structure was characterized by measuring fractal dimension and volume diameter using AIA and SALLS. SALLS method was found to be more reliable than AIA method. Floes in sweep floc region had larger size and fractal dimension than flocs in charge neutralization region. As pollutant removal increased, larger fractal dimension and size of floc were measured.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the adsorption, desorption, leaching and degradation pattern of fungicide fluazinam in the soil environment under the laboratory conditions. The mode of isothermal adsorption of fluazinam in soil was coincident with the Freundlich equation. The adsorption amount of fluazinam was much higher on soils containing organic matter than on soils oxidized with hydrogen peroxide. The presence of organic matter, humic acid or fulvic acid, increased the adsorption amount of fluazinam on soils. The Freundlich constant K was much higher in soil added with humic acid than in soil added with fulvic acid. The desorption ratio of fluazinam adsorbed to soil was increased by removal of organic matter. In leaching experiment using soil column, the fluazinam applied on the soil surface was not moved down to the bottom of soil and was not detected in leachate water. The degradation of fluazinam was faster in Soil I with rich organic matter than Soil II with poor organic matter, in non-sterilized soil than sterilized soil, and in flooded soil than unflooded soil.

  • Dissipation, adsorption and desorption of oxadiazon were examined in two soils containing different amounts of soil organic matter. In addition, reactivity of oxadiazon with humic monomers was searched to clarify binding mechanism of oxadiazon to soil organic matter in the presence of a laccase of Myceliophthera thermophila. Half lives of oxadiazon were 38 days in Soil I and 45 days in Soil II. Freundlich constant, k values of fresh soils were higher than those of oxidized soils. Adsorption rates of oxadiazon were increased 17.1% in Soil I and 9.3% in Soil II in the presence of a laccase but no significant increase was observed in oxidized soils. Desorption rates of oxadiazon in fresh soils were lower than those in oxidized soils. Desorption rates of adsorbed oxadiazon in soils addes with the enzyme were not changed in oxidized soils but decreased in fresh soils. The herbicide oxadiazon alone underwent no transformation by a laccase but in the presence of catechol, guaiacol and gallic acid as humic monomer, transformation rates of it were from 20% to 24%.

  • This study investigated removal characteristics of organic matters in pretreatment and reverse osmosis (RO) membrane processes for seawater desalination. Also, the influence of the changes in characteristics of organic matters on the membrane fouling was assessed. The pretreatment processes included dual media filtration (DMF), pressurized membrane filtration (MF), and submerged membrane filtration (SMF). Turbidity, UV absorption at 254 nm, dissolved organic carbon, size exclusion chromatography (SEC), fluorescence excitation emission matrix (FEEM), and transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) in raw and processed waters were analyzed. Ions and minerals were not removed by any pretreatment process tested, but were removed over 99% through the RO membrane process. Hydrophobic organics, which can play major role in organic membrane fouling, were relatively readily removed compared with hydrophilic ones. Membrane based pretreatment such as MF and SMF exhibited better removals of organics than conventional DMF. As the levels of organics in pretreated water decreased, the silt density index (SDI) decreased. MF treated water exhibited the lowest SDI value; this is possibly due to the lowest TEP ($0.1-0.4{\mu}m$) concentrations.

  • A fluidized bed reactor containing porous media has been known to be effective for nitrogen and organic matters removal in wastewater. The porous media which attached microbes plays important roles in simultaneous nitrification/denitrification (SND) due to coexistence of oxic, anaerobic and anoxic zone. For SND reaction, oxygen and organic substrates should be effectively diffused from wastewater into the intra-carrier zone. However, the overgrowth heterotrophic microbes at the surface of porous media may restrict from substrates diffusion. From these viewpoints, the existence and effect of heterotrophic bacteria at surface of porous media might be the key point for nitrogen removal. A porous media-membrane hybrid process was found to have improved nitrogen removal efficiency, due to stimulated denitrification as well as nitrification. Microelectrode studies revealed that although intra-media denitrification rate in a conventional fluidized bed was limited by organic carbon, this limitation was reduced in the hybrid process, resulting in the increased denitrification rate from 0.5 to $4.2\; mgNO_3-N/L/hr$.
