Study on the Behavior of Colloidal Hematite: Effects of Ionic Composition and Strength and Natural Organic Matter in Aqueous Environments (교질상 적철석의 거동 특성: 수환경 내 이온 조성 및 세기, 자연 유기물이 미치는 영향)

  • Iron (hydro)oxides in aqueous environments are primarily formed due to mining activities, and they are known to be typical colloidal particles disturbing surrounding environments. Among them, hematites are widespread in surface environments, and their behavior is controlled by diverse factors in aqueous environments. This study was conducted to elucidate the effect of environmental factors, such as ionic composition and strength, pH, and natural organic matter (NOM) on the behavior of colloidal hematite particles. In particular, two analytical methods, such as dynamic light scattering (DLS) and single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS), were compared to quantify and characterize the behavior of colloidal hematites. According to the variation of ionic composition and strength, the aggregation/dispersion characteristics of the hematite particles were affected as a result of the change in the thickness of the diffuse double layer as well as the total force of electrostatic repulsion and van der Walls attraction. Besides, the more dispersed the particles were, the farther away the aqueous pH was from their point of zero charge (PZC). The results indicate that the electrostatic and steric (structural) stabilization of the particles was enhanced by the functional groups of the natural organic matter, such as carboxyl and phenolic, as the NOM coated the surface of colloidal hematite particles in aqueous environments. Furthermore, such coating effects seemed to increase with decreasing molar mass of NOM. On the contrary, these stabilization (dispersion) effects of NOM were much more diminished by divalent cations such as Ca2+ than monovalent ones (Na+), and it could be attributed to the fact that the former acted as bridges much more strongly between the NOM-coated hematite particles than the latter because of the relatively larger ionic potential of the former. Consequently, it was quantitatively confirmed that the behavior of colloidal hematites in aqueous environments was significantly affected by diverse factors, such as ionic composition and strength, pH, and NOM. Among them, the NOM seemed to be the primary and dominant one controlling the behavior of hematite colloids. Meanwhile, the results of the comparative study on DLS and spICPMS suggest that the analyses combining both methods are likely to improve the effectiveness on the quantitative characterization of colloidal behavior in aqueous environments because they showed different strengths: the main advantage of the DLS method is the speed and ease of the operation, while the outstanding merit of the spICP-MS are to consider the shape of particles and the type of aggregation.

The Characteristics of Growth and Active Compounds of Angelica gigas Nakai Population in Mt. Jeombong (점봉산 참당귀 자생지의 생장 및 유용성분 특성)

  • This study was carried out to investigate characteristics of growth and active compounds of Angelica gigas population distributed in Mt. Jeombong. Quadrates were established in native area to harvest root part of Angelica gigas and analyze soil properties in September and October 2017. It was found that Angelica gigas populations were collected above the altitude 758 m near the valley covered with Fraxinus mandshurica and Acer pictum, and so on. In case of soil nutrient, soil organic matter, available phosphorous, and total nitrogen ranged 5.8-25.2%, 23.0-67.9 mg/kg and 0.3-1.3% respectively. Also, the Fresh weight of root ranged 28.8-65.3 g in September and 22.3-75.6 g in October. The content of active compounds ranged 2.7-4.7% in decursin and 2.9-4.5% decursinol angelate in October that was increased by 1% and 2.4% respectively compared with that in September. In the final analysis, there was positive correlation between fresh weight of root and exchangeable cation (natrium, calcium, magnesium). Also, there was positive correlation between active compounds and the content of water in root part of Angelica gigas.

Composting Characteristics of Food Waste - Poultry Manure Mixture Inoculated with Effective Microorganisms (유용미생물처리 음식물쓰레기와 계분 혼합물 퇴비화 특성)

  • This study investigated the evaluation of maturity, stability, nutrient and heavy metal from rotating drum composter of food waste amended with poultry manure composting inoculated with effective microorganisms(EM). Composting were performed for the first, drying reactor($15m^3$) 3 hours and the second, composting reactor($30m^3$) 24 hours, and parameters monitored this period included moisture content, NaCl, pH, electrical conductivity(EC), C/N ratio, organic matter(OM), nutrient content and heavy metal. Changes in compost temperature during composting were maintained constantly in the range of $60{\sim}80^{\circ}C$ using firewood boiler(450 MJ/h). We examined physicochemical parameters and heavy metals in order to assess their effectiveness as stability and maturity, nutrient and harmful indicators such as seed germination rate<60%, potassium 1>%, dm and NaCl>1%, dm at the end of the final compost. The finished compost obtained after decomposition phase at the end of the 2nd composter could not be utilized for land improvement or reclamation.

  • 참취(Aster scaber)는 국화과에 속하는 여러해살이식물로 취나물로 분류되어 전국에서 재배되고 있으며 최근 성인병 예방 효과와 무공해 건강식품으로 연중 소비가 증대되고 있으며, 주로 시설재배 작형으로 많이 재배하고 있다. 참취 시설재배지는 양분의 과다투입에 의한 염류집적과 잦은 관수로 물리성이 악화 되어 참취의 생육이 저하되어 수량이 감소하여 통상 3년 마다 종묘 갱신이 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구는 토양개량제 처리에 따른 토양 물리화학성과 참취의 생육에 미치는 영향을 검토하여 참취 시설재배 농가에 활용할 수 있는 방안을 개발하고자 시험을 수행하였다. 2018년 4월부터 2020년 11월까지 전라북도 농업기술원 허브산채시험장에서 참취 시설재배를 대상으로 무처리, 볏짚, 왕겨숯, 야자섬유 등을 10a당 1,000kg 처리하여 시기별 토양 이화학성, 생육특성을 조사하였다. 자재 처리 후 토양물리성의 변화는 볏짚 시용에서 가장 낮은 용적밀도 1.35g/cm3와 가장 높은 공극률 49.04%을 보였다. 토양 삼상 중 고상은 왕겨숯에서 52.82%로, 액상은 왕겨숯에서 30.28%로, 기상은 볏짚에서 22.45%로 가장 높았다. 토양 화학적 특성을 조사한 결과 모든 처리구에서 토양유기물 함량은 증가하였고, 유효인산은 함량은 440~487mg/kg로 낮아지는 경향을 보였다. 칼륨은 0.77~0.88cmolc/kg로 낮아졌고, 칼슘과 11.56~14.09cmolc/kg, 마그네슘은 2.93~3.22cmolc/kg로 증가하였다. 생육특성은 볏짚 처리구에서 초장 26.4cm, 엽장 8.7cm, 엽폭 6.7cm, 줄기수 7.2주로 다른 처리구에 비해 좋은 생육이 좋았으며, 수량 또한 볏짚 처리구에서 1,554.3kg/10a로 가장 높았다. 지하부 생육특성은 볏짚 처리구에서 근중 83.7g/주, 근장 28.2cm, 근직경mm로 다른 처리구에 비해 생육이 양호하였다. 참취 다년재배지 정신 전 볏짚을 시용함으로써 토양의 유기물함량 증가와 용적밀도 감소, 공극율 증가 등 토양의 물리화학성을 개선하여 참취 수량성 증대효과가 있는 것으로 판단된다.

  • 우리나라 음식물 폐기물은 수분함량 및 유기물 함량이 높기 때문에 부패와 악취, 침출수의 원인이 된다. 하지만 이를 혐기 소화 처리한다면 구성성분에 따라 60-80%가 생분해되어(한국유기성폐자원학회, 2001) 친환경적으로 처리가능하고, 혐기소화 결과물로 발생한 메탄가스를 대체에너지로 사용할 수 있어 유기물을 효과적으로 처리할 수 있다. 그러나 유기성 폐기물은 계절 및 지역에 따라 구성성분의 비가 다르며, 성분 중 지방 함량이 많을 때 바이오가스 생산이 지연되어 생산효율 감소의 주된 원인이 된다(Kafle and Kim, 2013). 전국음식물 폐기물 중 지방함량이 높은 어육류의 발생량은 3차 조사(환경부, 2008)에 비해 2배 이상 증가하였고, 향후 음식 섭취의 서구화로 인한 육류 소비가 증가할 것으로 예상된다(환경부, 2013). 따라서 본 연구는 지방함량이 높은 유기물의 효율적 처리를 위해 지방산 종류에 따라 포화 불포화 지방산을 포함하는 부산물의 혐기소화 능력 및 바이오가스 생산 성능을 구명하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구 결과, 불포화 지방산 함량이 높은 수준인 부산물의 바이오가스는 629.96-749.14 mL/g VS 이며, 포화 지방산 함량이 높은 수준의 부산물은 560.18-715.43 mL/g VS 였다. 불포화 지방산 함량이 25.31%-46.26%로 많아질수록 초기 순응기간은 13일에서 25일로 증가하였고, 총 바이오가스 생산량의 90%가 생산되는 기간인 T90은 57일에서 72일로 증가하여 바이오가스 생산 속도가 감소한 것으로 판단된다. 포화 지방산은 함량이 24.10-48.74%로 증가할수록 초기 순응기간의 변화는 없었고, T90은 69일에서 62일로 감소하였다. 또한 불포화 지방산이 많은 유기물은 모두 바이오가스 생산 과정에서 2단계의 지연현상을 보였지만, 포화지방산은 함량이 증가하여도 1단계의 지연현상을 보였다. 이러한 차이는 두 지방산에 관여하는 미생물의 차이(Diana, 2007)와 불포화 지방산의 굴곡된 형태가 지방산과 미생물이 상호 작용 방식에 악영향 미치기 때문으로 판단된다(Diana, 2013). 결론적으로, 두 지방산의 소화 방식은 차이가 있으며, 불포화 지방산 함량이 많은 유기물은 탄수화물 함량이 많은 유기물을 10% 이상 혼합하여 지연상을 감소시킬수 있다(Kim, 2017). 포화 지방산 함량이 많은 유기물은 초기 지연 현상 해결을 위한 연구가 추가적으로 요구된다.

Estimation of Characteristics Treatment for Food Waste with Blast Volume and Preheating of Air using Bio-Drying Process (Bio-drying 공법 활용 공기 투입 및 예열에 따른 음식물류 폐기물 분해 특성 평가)

  • In this study, the efficiency of treatment of moisture and organic matter in food waste was analyzed according to the air blast volume and preheating using the bio-drying method. Te mount of air blast volume and preheating were determined by the evaluation of temperature and CO2 during food waste treatment using the bio-drying method. As a results, the increase in the air blast volume increased the moisture removal efficiency and removal rate, but, lowered the temperature inside the bio-drying by the decease in microbial activity. In order to maintain the activity of microorganisms, it was estimated that it was necessary to inject an appropriate air blast rate according th the properties of the food waste. In this study, the injection of air blast volume at 15L/min was optimal. It was evaluated that the organic matter and water removal rates according to the presence or absence of air preheating, the organic matter removal rate and water removal rate increased by 3-5% when air preheating was not performed. Also, there was no internal aggregation caused by the generation of condensate inside the bio-drying. Therefore, for effective bio-drying of food waste, it is necessary to maintain an appropriate air blast volume to maintain microbial activity, and it is considered that injection through preheating of air is required.

Origin of Organic Matter and Geochemical Variation of Upper Quaternary Sediments from the Ulleung Basin (울릉분지 상부 제4기 퇴적물의 유기물 기원 및 지화학적 분포)

  • Elemental, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and isotopic analysis of the core sediments from the northwestern and eastern Ulleung Basin of the East were carried out to identify their geochemical characteristics, spatial and vertical variation and origin of organic matter in Upper Quaternary sediments from the northwestern and eastern Ulleung Basin of the East Sea. TOC, m and TS did not show spatial variation between the sampling locations whereas they showed systematic vertical variation associated with MIS stages related to the sea-level change of the East Sea. It is suggested that these past changes of sea-level influenced the sedimentary depositional environments and/or diagenesis which resulted the patterns observed in this study. Based on the results of TOC/N, TS/TOC, ${\delta}^{13}C_{org}\;and\;{\delta}^{15}N_{org}$ analysis, organic matters in the study area appears to be predominantly originated from the marine algae rather than land plant and deposited under normal marine oxic condition during MIS I and MIS III period, and under euxinic/anoxic condition during MIS II period. TOC/N, ${\delta}^{13}C_{org}\;and\;{\delta}^{15}N_{org}$ have a relatively constant value irrespective of MIS stages, implying that the organic matter source does not change by the sea-level fluctuations. However, the results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis indicates that the organic matter is in immature stage and originated from land-plant (Type III), locating in the immature stage land plant (Type III). Similar differences were reported from other areas such as the Atlantic Ocean, Iberia Abyssal Plain, Mediterranean Sea, suggesting that Rock-Eval method does not exactly reflect the characteristic of immature organic matters. Accordingly, the application of Rock-Eval pyrolysis for delineating the source of immature organic matters should be approached with caution and all other geochemical proxies should be considered altogether at the same time.

  • 미생물을 이용한 광물의 제련(microbial leaching)은 미생물의 몇가지 기전에 의해 광물성 sulfide를 산화시킴으로써 금속을 수용화시키는 과정이다. 이 방법은 현재는 구리나 우라늄 제련에 이용되고 있으며 광물질에 금속의 함량이 낮을 때 재래적 화학적 처리로 제련하는 것에 비해 훨씬 경제적이므로 앞으로의 자원획득문제에 기술적 및 생태적 중요성을 갖고 있다. 본 연구에서는 호산성의 Thiobacilli와 같은 biotope에 생존하는 종속영양미생물을 분리한 후 혼합 배양을 통해 Thiobacilli의 일차 생산자로서의 역할및 이때 생성된 유기물의 영향및 종속영양 미생물이 Thiobacilli에 미치는 영향에 대해 조사하고자 하였다.
