  • In order to improve audit quality, it is essential to understand the occurrence of disagreement between auditors and managers, and this study aims to analyze the impact of Business Strategies on audit risk and accounting audit delay. To this end, we conducted an empirical analysis using sample 2,910 firm-year data from 2018 to 2020 of KOSPI-listed and KOSDAQ-listed companies. The results of the empirical analysis of this study are as follows. First, compared to the companies of defender type, prospectors can expand audit procedures for new products, R&D costs, and intangible assets, and increase audit delays due to disagreement between managers and auditors. Second, compared to KOSPI-listed companies, the prospectors in KOSDAQ are more likely to have lower financial reporting quality, which further increases audit delays. The results of this study analyzed whether a company's Business Strategy affects the possibility of disagreement between an auditor and a company, and verified whether there is a difference in the audit report lag by stock market. The results of this study show that auditors' strong duty of care is needed for the companies of prospector type with high audit risk, and it is meaningful to present reinforced audit systems and specific guidelines for the companies of prospector type through the definition of prospector type. It also enables the expansion of research to identify the relationship between non-financial factors and audit risks that make up the companies of prospector type.

  • This study examines information efficiency of financial information on the firm value for the listed manufacturing companies in Korea stock market in terms of timing pattern of information. We set 3 different test periods based on the financial statement released years - the current year, 90 days before financial statement announcement and the next year. We introduce using the stepwise regression method to examine the effect of financial variables on the stock returns. The financial variables include profitability ratio, growth ratio, stability ratio, activity ratio and market valuation ratio. The results of the study showed that both growth and profitability ratio affected the current year stock returns, while stability and activity ratio affected the next year stock returns. Growth rate of total asset affects both current year and next year stock returns. Our findings imply that the period in which financial information is reflected in the firm value, could vary with the characteristics of financial information.

  • This study examines the asymmetric volatility in the Korean bond market and stock market by using the KTB Prime Index and KOSPI. Because accurate estimation and forecasting of volatility is essential before investing assets, it is important to understand the asymmetric response of volatility in bond market. Therefore I investigate the existence of asymmetric volatility in Korean bond market unlike the previous studies which mainly focused on stock returns. The main results of the empirical analysis with GARCH and GJR-GARCH model are as follow. At first, it exists the asymmetric volatility on KOSPI returns like the previous studies. Also, I find that the GJR-GARCH is more suitable one than GARCH model for forecasting volatility. Second, it does not exist the asymmetric volatility on KTB Prime Index returns. This result is showed by that using the GARCH model for forecasting volatility in bond market is sufficient.

As a result, first, it appeared that the more optimistic the manager's earnings forecasts were for the current term, the lower the future earnings quality was. Second, it was found that the lower the accuracy of the manager's earnings forecasts was for the current term, the lower the future earnings quality was. Such findings suggest that management earnings forecasts will be used for determining future earnings quality.

  • The purpose of this study investigates the relation between corporate life cycle and management compensation. The analysis is performed by comparing the compensation level and pay-performance-sensitivity (PPS) at each life cycle based on Korean data from 2003 to 2014. The results show that regarding compensation level, mature stage has the highest mean value of compensation and compensation level drops after mature stage. In introduction stage, growth and decline stages, compensation is not sensitive to accounting performance. In a while, in mature stage, management compensation varies with accounting performance more significantly than stock performance. In additional analysis, the results indicate that the finding is not designated from growth opportunities and the relation differs when the firm is included in a conglomerate. These findings contribute to the literature by providing additional evidence to understand for compensation and the corporate life cycle studies.

  • Prior literature shows that audit market concentration which is measured as the Herfindahl index is negatively associated with audit quality in Korea. This study analyzes whether characteristics of an audit committee have effect on the relation between audit market concentration and audit quality. This is because it is expected that effective audit committees restrict the tendency of dominant auditors to neglect their duties. The empirical results of this study using the sample firms having an audit committee listed in the Korea Composite Stock Price Index market for 2006-2015 are summarized as follows. First, consistent with prior research, audit quality decreases as audit market concentration increases. However, audit quality is not lowered as audit market concentration rises only when the audit committee has financial expertise among representative characteristics of an audit committee - independence, financial expertise, and activity. This research finds contributions in that it explores the effect of audit committee characteristics on audit quality in consideration of audit market concentration and utilizes the differential types of the characteristics of an audit committee at the same time.
