  • This research suggest method to calculate more accurate shearing and bending force on corrugated steel plate that it is produced domestically. This research analyze limitation of former formula on domestic design standard and existing research. In addition The strength calculation formula on corrugated steel plate was proposed according to result of the experiment and FEM analysis. In this study, the result that compare experiment with analysis using the proposed shear buckling coefficient and limit width to thickness ratio indicate similar behavior. As the result of the research, It is judged that the structural member design and performance evaluation of the corrugated steel plate was conveniently applied.

  • A series of centrifugal model test was conducted to investigate the distribution of vertical earth pressure on circular ductile underground corrugated steel plate waterway culvert with considering the compaction degree of the backfill in the high landfilled embankment section. The compaction degree of backfill was varied to 80, 85, 90, and 95% at the 53g-level gravity considering the similarity of the site. As a result of this test, the load reduction factor by the arching effect of the top of corrugated steel plate showing ductile behavior nearly agreed with the load reduction factor according to the compaction degree of backfill specified in the AISI(2002) design method. The vertical earth pressure measured at the top of the corrugated steel plate was linearly decreased as the compaction degree increased. The greater the compaction degree of backfill was, the greater the reduction of surface loading on the top of the corrugated steel plate by arching effect. The load decreased by arching effect on top of the corrugated steel plate was transferred to the side backfill of the corrugated steel plate(EP 1) and the outside of backfill(EP 3).

  • This paper evaluates the feasibility of use of high-strength steel for soil-metal corrugated steel structures. Two specifications, the AASHTO(2004) and the CHBDC(2000), were compared and the scientific background of equations for the buckling stability in those specifications were investigated to figure out the governing factors for buckling strength of structures. Numerous finite element analyses for round-pipe type of soil-metal corrugated steel structures were carried out with considering the elastic-plastic relationship of a material and the geometrical non-linearity, as well as the various design variables, such as span length, depths of soil cover, section properties, tensile strength and backfill conditions. Buckling strength equation of the CHBDC(2000) is still valid and conservative for both normal and high-strength steel soil-metal corrugated steel structures, and the buckling strength increases with the use of hight-strengths steel.

  • Soil-steel bridges are made of flexible corrugated steel plates buried in the well-compacted granular soil. One kind of possible collapses of these structures could be initiated by shear or tension failure in the soil cover subjected to vehicle loads. Current design codes provide the requirements for the minimum depth of the soil cover to avoid problems associated with soil cover failures. However, these requirements were developed for short span (less than 7.7 m) structures which are made of unstiffened plates of standard corrugation (150$\times$50 m). Numerical analyses were carried out to investigate the behavior of long span soil steel bridges according to thickness of the soil cover. The span of structures were up to 20 m and deep corrugated plates (381$\times$140 m) were used. The analysis showed that the minimum cover depth of 1.5 m could be sufficient to prevent the soil cover failure in the structures with a span exceeding 10 m. Additional analyses were performed to verify the reinforcement effect of the concrete relieving slab which can be a special feature to reduce the live-load effects. Analyses revealed that the bending moment of the conduit wall with a relieving slab was less than 20% of that without a relieving slab in a case of shallow soil cover conditions.

  • Soil-steel structures have been used for the underpass, or drainage systems in the road embankment. This type of structures sustain external load using the correlations with the steel wall and engineered backfill materials. Buried flexible conduits made of corrugated steel plates for the coastal road was tested under vehicle loading to investigate the effects of live load. Testing conduits was a circular structure with a diameter of 6.25m. Live-load tests were conducted on two sections, one of which an attempt was made to reinforce the soil cover with the two layers of geo-gird. Hoop fiber strains of corrugated plate, normal earth pressures exerted outside the structure, and deformations of structure were instrumented during the tests. This paper describes the measured static and dynamic load responses of structure. Wall thrust by vehicle loads increased mainly at the crown and shoulder part of the conduit. However additional bending moment by vehicle loads was neglectable. The effectiveness of geogrid-reinforced soil cover on reducing hoop thrust is also discussed based on the measurements in two sections of the structure. The maximum thrusts at the section with geogrid-reinforced soil cover was 85-92% of those with un-reinforced soil cover in the static load tests of the circular structure; this confirms the beneficial effect of soil cover reinforcement on reducing the hoop thrust. However, it was revealed that the two layers of geogrid had no effect on reducing the overburden pressure at the crown level of structure. The obtained values of DLA decrease approximately in proportion to the increase in soil cover from 0.9m to 1.5m. These values are about 1.2-1.4 times higher than those specified in CHBDC.

  • A milatary ship without degaussing coil has a vertical magnetization to compensate magnetization induced by the vertical magnetic field component of earth magnetic field during demagnetization process. Flash D is very useful to acquire vertical magnetization. However this is hard to predict vertical magnetization. This experiment was investicated on another method, which used the only vertical bias magentic field. The specimens were prepared by thin Zn coated steel sheet with a thickness of 0.15mm. The shapes of 3 specimes was rectangular, triangular and circular cylinders. These shapes were corresponded to the shapes of bow, mid and stern of a vessel. Through FEM analysis, the difference of magnetic signatures for these specimens was recognized and the residual magnetization curve was measured. magnetic field was generated by a solenoid coil and magnetic signature was measured by a magnetic field sensor. A linearity between a vertical bias magnetic field and a vertical manetzation existed and the vertical magnetization of a miltary vessel was predicted by the linearity.
