An experimental study is conducted to investigate the fluid flow and heat transfer around tubes arranged in line. All measurements are performed at Reynolds number 1.58*10$^{4}$ with varing tube spacings from the small pitch ratio(L/D=1.25) to the large pitch ratio(L/D=3.0). Mean static pressures and mean temperatures of the surface of tubes and mean velocities and turbulent intensities in tube banks are measured. The flow patterns and the characteristics of heat transfer are strongly influenced by the tube spacings. Especially, in the case of very small spacings(L/D=1.25), the flow between neighboring tubes becomes very stagnant and the heat transfer decreases. In the case of each tube spacing, the characteristics of heat transfer around the 3rd, the 4th and the 5th tubes are nearly similar to one another, because the flow around tubes becomes stable at the 3rd tubes. The local heat transfer has the peak value near the reattachment point which has the peak value of pressure, but the local heat transfer for the 2nd tube of L/D=1.25 without reattaching has the peak value at .theta.=75.deg.. For each pitch ratio, the mean heat transfer increases gradually toward the downstream tubes, because the oncoming flow through neighboring tubes comes closer to the forward and rear surfaces of the tube and the turbulent intensity becomes larger in the downstream direction.
We investigated the distribution and diversity of fungi in brackish water and soil from the Eulsukdo Island, Geumgang Estuary Bank, Suncheon Bay, Dae-ho Tide Embankment and coastal sand dune in Sinduri and Bu-nam Tide Embankment, Korea. Fungi were isolated from water samples by hand-pumped filtration, and soil samples were collected and diluted. The isolated fungi were incubated in potato dextrose agar at 25℃. A total of 173 fungal strains were isolated from brackish water and identified according to their respective internal transcribed spacer via phylogenetic analysis. The diversity of all fungal strains was analyzed according to diversity indices. The fungal strains belonged to any of 18 taxonomic orders: Pleosporales, Eurotiales, Capnodiales, Hypocreales, Polyporales, Saccharomycetales, Agaricales, Glomerellales, Mucorales, Dothideales, Russulales, Xylariales, Sordariales, Myrmecridiales, Tubeufiales, Onygenales, Cantharellales, and Amphisphaeriales. Cladosporium spp. (20%), Penicillium spp. (19%), and Fusarium sp. (5%) comprised majority of the identified strains. Two species from the fungal isolates were newly identified in Korea: Sarocladium kiliense NNIBRFG3280 and Fusicolla merismoides NNIBRFG23708.

Experiments were conducted on sine wave fin-and-tube heat exchangers having oval tubes under wet condition. Oval tubes having an aspect ratio of 0.6 were made, by deforming 12.7mm round tubes. Twelve samples, having different fin pitch and tube row, were tested. Results showed that, for oval tube samples, the effect of fin pitch on j and f factor was not significant. As for the effect of tube row, the lowest j factor was obtained for one row configuration(81% of two row configuration), which is clear contrast to round tube samples, where the highest j factor was obtained for one row configuration. Possible reasoning is provided considering the flow and heat transfer characteristics of sine wave channel combined with connecting oval tubes. Comparison of $j/f^{1/3}$ with plain fin-and-tube heat exchanger having 15.9mm O.D. round tube reveals that present oval fin-and-tube heat exchanger shows superior thermal performance except for one row configuration. In other words, $j/f^{1/3}$ of the two row oval tube heat exchanger was 1.6~2.5 times larger than those of round tube heat exchanger, 1.4~2.4 times larger for three row configuration and 1.2~2.8 times for four row configuration.

Dermal papilla cells (DPCs) are present throughout the hair cycle and play an essential role in hair cycle and hair growth. In this study, we investigated the effect of Carex dispalata on the activation of anagen pathway in DPCs. C. dispalata extract increased the proliferation of DPCs and induced changes in the levels of cell cycle-related proteins. To elucidate the mechanism by which C. dispalata extract stimulates the anagen pathway related to the proliferation of DPCs, we evaluated the effect of C. dispalata extract on the activation of Akt signaling. The increase in the level of phospho-Akt by C. dispalata extract was inhibited by PI3K inhibitor (wortmannin). Wortmannin reduced the effects of C. dispalata extract on the levels of cell cycle-related proteins and proliferation of DPCs. C. dispalata extract increased the levels of Wnt/β-catenin proteins. Wnt/β-catenin inhibitor (XAV939) inhibited changes in cell cycle, cell cycle-related proteins, Wnt/β-catenin proteins, and proliferation induced by C. dispalata extract. C. dispalata extract increased the level of autophagy protein (LC3I/II), and this change was inhibited by XAV939. These results suggest that C. dispalata extract can activate PI3K/Akt, Wnt/β-catenin, and autophagy pathways in DPCs to induce cell proliferation, and thereby promote hair growth phase.

In this study, we isolated and identified bacteria from freshwater and soil collected from Osang reservoir, to screen antimicrobial bacteria against various pathogenic bacteria. 38 strains were isolated and assigned to the class Proteobacteria (22 strains), Actinobacteria (7 strains), Bacteroidets (6 strains), and Firmicutes (3 strains) based on 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. Among them, strain OS17 showed a good growth inhibition against 5 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus strains and Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, Filobasidium neoformans. As a result of the 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, strain OS17 show the high similarity with Burkholderia ambifaria $AMMD^T$, B. diffusa $AM747629^T$, B. tettitorii $LK023503^T$ 99.8%, 99.7%, 99.6%, respectively. We investigated cell growth and antimicrobial activity according to commercial culture medium, temperature, pH for culture optimization of strain OS17. Optimal conditions for growth and antimicrobial activity in strain OS17 were found to be: YPD medium, $35^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.5. When the strain was cultured in LB, NB, TSB, R2A media at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$, the antimicrobial activity did not show. Culture filtrate of strain OS17 showed antimicrobial activity against 5 MRSA strains, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, and Filobasidium neoformans with inhibition zones from 2 to 8 mm. Optimal reaction time was 48 h in YPD medium, 100 rpm and 0.3 vvm in 2 L-scale fed-batch fermentation process for antimicrobial activity. Culture optimization of strain OS17 can be improved on antimicrobial activity. Therefore, the antimicrobial activity of Burkholderia sp. OS17 had potential as antibiotics for pathogens including MRSA.

In 2020, the diversity of benthic macroinvertebrate communities was investigated in the Sohan stream, an ecological and landscape conservation area, and the results were compared with the previous research conducted in 2011. In total, 42 species (two phyla, three classes, and seven orders) were found in the Sohan stream. Species richness and abundance sharply decreased at all sampling sites because of Typhoons Haishen and Maysak in 2020, which had a direct impact on the stream. In the functional feeding group, the ratio of collector-gatherers was the highest at all sampling sites. However, during the autumn season, the shredder ratio increased from 13.4% to 42.4% in the uppermost stream site. Compared with the diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates surveyed in 2011, a total of 53 species (two phyla, three classes, and eight orders) were found. The percentage of species richness and abundance of Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera was more than 50% both in 2011 and 2020. Only the richness of Ephemeroptera was significantly different between them (2011: 2.9 and 2020: 6.7). In this study, the abrupt changes of species richness and abundance in benthic macroinvertebrate were not observed before and after the designation of an ecological and landscape conservation area. However, it is necessary to monitor benthic macroinvertebrates in order to confirm that biodiversity is continuously maintained long after the designation of the ecological and landscape conservation area.
This study aimed to isolated wild yeasts from freshwater in Korea. The strains were identified by using the D1/D2 domains of the 26S rDNA regions. Consequently, six strains were named as Apiotrichum chiropterorum (NNIBRFG36995), A. domesticum (NNIBRFG32938), A. dulcitum (NNIBRFG33144), A. laibachii (NNIBRFG36991), Saprochaete quercus (NNIBRFG33183) and Tausonia pullulans (NNIBRFG33181). These yeasts have not previously been recorded in Korea, this paper is the first report. We were investigated to the morphological and cultural characteristics of these yeasts. All the strains grew well on Yeast extract peptone dextrose (YPD), Potato dextrose (PD), and Yeast mold (YM) media and in temperature range of 15-30℃. A. domesticum (NNIBRFG32938), A. laibachii (NNIBRFG36991) and T. pullulans (NNIBRFG33181) grew even in 20% glucose containing YPD medium, so they had glucose tolerance. A. domesticum (NNIBRFG32938) and A. laibachii (NNIBRFG36991) had salt resistance as growing even in 5% NaCl containing YPD medium.

A numerical study of heat and mass transfer has been carried out for a frost formation process on a circular cylinder in a cross flow including the effect of buoyancy. Studies include cases of low and high Reynolds number flows. The effect of normal velocity at the surface which is produced due to mass transfer was included in the analysis as well as heat transfer contribution generated due to mass transfer. Variations of heat transfer and frost growth both in time and in the circumferential direction have been obtained for various buoyancy parameters. The effect of flow directions(identical or opposite directions to the gravity) has been studied to yield different frost growth. Our results have been compared with existing experimental data and are in good agreement. Buoyancy analyses for a high Reynolds number flow agree with full numerical solutions for the case of having the same flow direction as gravity. However, for the opposite direction case, the boundary layer analyses would not be applicable to predict frost growth except the region near the stagnation point.
