The Intermittent phenomena of the turbulent momentrm transports were closely examined in order to know the nature of intermittency and its fluid dynamic implications in the oceanic turbulent boundary layer. Also the connection between the observed intermittency and the bursting phenomenon was studied in detail. In this investigation, strong intermittency of turbulent momentum transports were found and the peak values of Reynolds stress (i,e., u'w') was about 408 times greater than average Reynolds stress (u',w') in the mid-layer and 270 times greater in the uppcrlayer of the turbulent boundary layer. These values are far greater than presently known maximum value, namely 30 times greater than the average Reynolds stress reported by Gordon (1974) and Heathersaw (1974). The distribution of Reynolds stress were extremely non-normal with the mean peak occurrence period of 5 minutes in the mid-layer and 1. 1 minutes in the upper layer of the turbulent boundary layer. Each teak lasted about 2 seconds in the mid-layer and 1.1 seconds in the upper layer of the turbulent boundary layer. Our dimensionless period of peak occurrence are found to be 33.3 in the mid-layer and 7.3 in the upper-layer, which are substantially larger than the often quoted values of 3.2-6.8 for the bursting period (Jackson, 1976). Some workers have interpreted that the intermittency phenomenon is the retlect of burst across their probe of the currentmeter (Gordon, 1974; Heathersaw, 1974). However, it was known that the burst can be found very near bottom boundary with smoothed bottom (i,e., friction Reynolds number$\leq$3,000) in the laboratory experiments. Through this investigation, it was found that the intermittent strength of the turbulent momentum transports does not conclusively indicate the characteristic feature of the boundary layer turbulence with a rough bottom (i,e., friction Reynolds number$\geq$10$\^$5/).

Due to the global warming and air pollution, interest in renewable energies has increased in recent years. In particular, the crisis of the depletion of fossil energy resources in the near future has accelerated the renewable energy technologies. Among the renewable energy resources, oceans covering almost three-fourths of earth's surface have an enormous amount of energy. For this reason, various approaches have been made to harness the tremendous energy potential. In order to achieve two purposes: to improve harbor water quality and to use wave energy, this study proposed a sea water exchange structure applying an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) wave generation system that utilizes the air flow velocity induced by the vertical motion of water column in the air chamber as a driving force of turbine. In particular, the airflow velocity in the air chamber was estimated from the time variations of water surface profile computed by using 3D-NIT model based on the 3-dimensional irregular numerical wave tank. The relationship of the frequency spectrums between the computed airflow velocities and the incident waves was analyzed. This study also discussed the characteristics of frequency spectrums in the air chamber according to the presence of the structure, wave deformations by the structure, and the power of the water and air flows were also investigated. It is found that the phase difference exists in the time series data of water level fluctuations and air flow in the air chamber and the air flow power is superior to the fluid flow power.

In dynamic centrifuge tests, equivalent shear beam (ESB) container minimizes the boundary effect between the soil model and the wall of the container so as to effectively simulate the boundary conditions of real field state. The ESB container at KAIST was evaluated to be performing properly by Lee et al. (2013). However, it is necessary to re-evaluate the performance of ESB container since the ESB container may have deteriorated over time. Thus, the performance of eight-year-old ESB container was re-evaluated through dynamic centrifuge tests. Firstly, the natural period of the empty ESB container was compared with the results of Lee et al. (2013). Then the boundary effect of sand-filled ESB container was evaluated. Results show that the dynamic behavior of the sand-filled ESB container was similar to that of the ground, despite a decrease in the natural period of the empty ESB container over time. In addition, the dynamic response of the ground built in the ESB container and the same ground simulated through numerical analysis with free-field boundary conditions were similar. Therefore, it was found that the boundary effect of the ESB container due to the decrease in the natural period was not significant.
The slope collapse can be classified into internal and external factors. Internal factors are engineering factors inherent in the formation of slopes such as soil depth, slope angle, shear strength of soil, and external factors are external loading such as earthquakes. The external factor for earthquake can be expressed by various values such as peak ground acceleration (PGA), peak ground velocity (PGV), Arias coefficient (I), natural period (Tp), and spectral acceleration (SaT=1.0). Specially, PGA is the most typical value that defines the magnitude of the ground motion of an earthquake. However, it is not enough to consider the displacement in the slope which depends on the duration of the earthquake even if the vibration has the same peak ground acceleration. In this study, numerical analysis of two-dimensional plane strain conditions was performed on engineered block, and slope responses due to seismic motion of scaling PGA to 0.2 g various event scenarios was analyzed. As a result, the response of slope is different depending on the presence or absence of sliding block; it is shown that slope response depend on the seismic wave triggering sliding block than the input motion factors.

Seismic qualification (SQ) is required prior to the installation of safety related electrical cabinets in nuclear power plants (NPPs). Modal identification of the electrical equipment is one of the most significant steps to perform SQ, and is an essential process to construct a realistic analytical model. In this study, shaking table tests were conducted to identify a variation of the dynamic characteristics of a seismic monitoring system cabinet installed in NPPs according to the excitation level. Modal identification of the cabinet has been performed by a frequency domain decomposition method. The results of this study show that the dynamic properties of the cabinet are nonlinearly varied according to the excitation level and the specimen behaves significantly in a nonlinear manner under safe shutdown earthquake motion in Korea. The main sources of the nonlinear behavior of the specimen have been judged by friction forces and geometrical nonlinearity rather than material nonlinearity. The nonlinear variation of the dynamic characteristics of the electrical cabinet might be accepted as an important fact that should be considered during the SQ of safety related equipment.
After detailed geological mapping, structural and fracture-density data were collected and analyzed in the vicinity of Cheonseong and Jeongjok Mts., Gyeongsangnam-do. A extensive dextral strike-slip fault (Beopgi Fault) Parallel to Yangsan and Dongrae Faults, a dextral-transtensional-NW fault, and a few intermittent faults have been found in the study area. Based on strike and frequency, fracture system has been divided into three sets such as NNE-trending J1 ($NS-40^{\circ}E$), WNW-trending J2 ($N50^{\circ}-80^{\circ}W$), and ENE-trending J3 ($N60^{\circ}-90^{\circ}E$). According to analysis of fracture density, it is revealed as follows: (a) Jl is the combination of Y-, P-, and R-shear fractures due to the dextral strike-slip of the Beopgi Fault. (b) J2 is the preexisted fracture zone conducting the intrusion of granite. Two tensional fractures dipping to NNE and SSW respectively have been induced by intrusion of granite and followed crustal uplift. (c) J3 is the tensional fracture developed between Yangsan and Dongrae Faults having NNE trend and dextral strike-slip sense. This study aims to reduce environmental impact and insure stability of underground facilities and tunnels.
Fractures and segmentation in association with the activities of the Yangsan fault are studied around Mt. Namsan, Gyengju city in the southeastern part of Korea. It is believed that the higher values of joint density and fractal dimension with the approach of the center of the Yangsan fault mean intense fracturing due to the fault activity. The boundary between fault damage zone and host rock is inferred to be placed at about 2.7 km from the center of the Yangsan fault where the values of joint density and fractal dimension abruptly decrease and the orientations of joint are also much dispersed. The small faults within the damage zone of the Yangsan fault are definitely divided into right-lateral and left-lateral strike-slip faults. The former is considered to be formed during the right-lateral movement of the Yangsan fault and the latter during the left-lateral movement. The Yangsan fault is segmented in the study area with obvious evidences as follows: (1) the difference of fault strike between northern and southern segments, (2) The geometry of contractional imbricate fans and syncline plunging $9^{\circ}$, $S85^{\circ}E$ at the end of northern segment, and (3) anticline plunging $28^{\circ}$, $N4^{\circ}W$ at the end of southern segment.
To date, several studies have been carried out to partially compare and analyze the resistivity values within the Yangsan fault zone through the electrical resistivity survey of the exposed fault zone. However, it is not easy to directly observe a large scaled fault like Yangsan fault that has been weathered, especially due to the weathering of the fault core. This study aimed to reveal the characteristics of location, geometry, the fault core zone as well as underground distribution of the associated fault damage zone, based on the results of electrical resistivity and micro-topographic surveys as well as field geology survey in the southern Yangsan fault zone (Eonyang area). The resistivity anomaly zones developed in the NNE to NE direction were confirmed by the electrical resistivity survey. According to the electrical resistivity, micro-topographic, and field geologic surveys, the Yangsan fault has been formed by three to five fault cores, fault damage zones and/or fractured zones.

The study area in the East Sea is located on the northeastern margins of the Ulleung Basin near the Kita-Yamato Bank. The research area provides the important clue to the development of Miocene basins which are characterized by the normal faults and volcanic activities related to rifting in the continental crust. Kita-Yamato Bank is a small sediment-filled graben which was formed by failed rifting in the Early Miocene. The basins rapidly vary the bathymetry, depth of acoustic basement and thickness of sedimentary layer. The tension in the study area caused the extensional lithospheric deformation before/during the Early Miocene. In consequence, tectonic forces resulted in the depression or subsidence of basement from continental rifting in the Kita-Yamato Bank followed by the opening of the Ulleung Basin, and caused the onset of graben or half-graben structure bounded by large blocked syn-rift faults. Afterward no significant tectonic deformation exists, with the consequence that post-rift normal faults with small heave were formed and reactivated by the resultant forces such as tectonic subsidence, sediment loading and volcanic activity. The Cenozoic sediment layer has a maximum thickness of 1.0 s along the center of the graben or half-graben, which overlies the consolidated acoustic basement. Seismic units V and IV supposed to be syn-rift sedimentary rocks are deformed by both the volcanic activities and numerous basement-involved normal faults induced from extension. In the uppermost layer, slump scars resulted from the slope failure are recognized.
This paper presents the concept of dynamically reconfigurable space by introducing smart building components. Thanks to the advances in ubiquitous computing and ITC technology, we are able to expect, in the near future, the aspects of future buildings which may transform their appearance and states to perform specific functions. In other words, it is certain that the building space will actively reconfigure itself to accommodate user's needs once we acquire proper technologies. Based on the assumption that building components may not be transformed through the magical process, but change its physical states (e.g. transparency, illumination, display contents, etc.) and functions of embedded devices (e.g. audio, actuators, sensors, etc.), we can envision a dynamically reconfigurable smart space. In order to conceptualize such spaces, critical surveys have been conducted on current works of leading architects. When the room needs to be used as a specific function room, the components need to change theirs states or to behave in a certain manner to create an optimum environment. Our model defines the relationships and elements to describe the mechanism of reconfigurable space. We expect this model provides a conceptual guideline for developing a smart building components based on spatial service scenarios. Therefore, a future smart spaces implemented by integrating various technologies are not designed in deterministic manner, so that spatial functions are expanded without constrained by physical existence.
