  • This study compared and analyzed the tooth brushing time per day and dental caries in 1-13-year-old children in the stage of the completion of their permanent teeth based on the 6th primitive at data of objective National Health Nutrition Survey. The results show a meaningful difference between the DMFT and dental caries experience. In particular, the group with a lower toothbrushing rate after lunch generally have a higher incidence of dental caries.

  • Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the association between intake of energy, calcium and protein and permanent teeth caries in Korean children. Methods: Research data were obtained from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) and 1,274 Korean children within 9 to 12 years were selected as subjects for the study. The DMFT index, nutrition factors including total energy and protein intake, and degree of calcium intake were identified Chi-square test was performed to assess the difference of distribution in socioeconomic status, oral health behavior and nutrition factors according to sex. Multilevel linear regression analysis was performed to identify the relationship between DMFT index and the related variables. Results: Significant differences in energy, protein and Ca intake were confirmed according to the sex. Among 10 year-old children who intake total energy less than the recommended had few dental caries (p=0.058, ${\beta}=-0.411$). In addition, 11-year-old children having protein intake more than the recommended experienced dental caries (p=0.02, ${\beta}=0.588$). Conclusions: These results suggest that, there is significant differences between intake of energy and protein and dental caries among Korean children. However, further researches is needed to confirm between intake of energy and protein as a related factor.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to attempt to lay the foundation for the development of oral health programs geared toward promoting the oral health of low socioeconomic class children. Methods : The subjects of this study have been investigated for the use of children to 96 local children's center. Questionnaire for research purposes are described in more detail under the coordination of child care teachers to students, students to be able to record. The survey was conducted at the Health center. Analyzed the data collected by SPSS 18.0. Results : The findings of the study were as follows: The children were influenced by habits of having a snack in dental caries experience. Higher intake of bread and a lot of children more probability of dental caries experience. I've found a lot of sweet-food intake eleven cakes or fruits and vegetables that children prefer higher dental caries experience was low. Conclusions : Education on dietary behavior for low-income children was necessary because of the high correlation of the relationship between dietary habits and dental caries and diet.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the salivary secretion, salivary pH and cariogenic activity using unstimulated whole saliva in patients with hematologic malignancy. Methods : Nineteen patients (9 male, 10 female) who had hematologic malignancy and were treated with chemotherapy or bone marrow transplantation, and nineteen normal volunteers (7 male, 12 female) as control group were included. The mean age of patients group and control group was 45.1 and 46.7 years, respectively. Patients group was examined salivary secretion, salivary pH, and cariogenic activity using unstimulated whole saliva and was compared with control group. Results : In comparison with control group, salivary secretion, salivary pH and salivary buffer capacity were significantly lower in patients with hematologic malignancy (p<0.01). Both cariogenic activity(p<0.01) and the number of Lactobacilli(p<0.05) are higher in patients group than control group. Conclusions : These results suggest that the unstimulated whole salivary secretion, pH and buffer capacity were lower in patients with hematologic malignancy than control group. Cariogenic activity is higher in patients with hematologic malignancy than control group. Such salivary factor and cariogenic activity can increase the possibility of induction of dental caries.

  • Objectives : Molecular biology techniques were employed to assess diversity of bacterial in children's dental caries. Methods : DNA of germs was extracted and the diversity of the 16S rRNA clones was analyzed by amplified rDNA restriction analysis and sequencing. The experimental samples were pit and fissure caries (PC), deep dentinal caries (DC), smooth surface caries (SC), and supragingival plaque (PQ) from 50 children of age less than 12 years old. The control group was healthy teeth supragingival plaque (HT). Thirty clones from each 16S rRNA clone library of 5 samples were randomly selected, thus a total of 150 clones were analyzed. Results : Amplified rDNA restriction analysis uncovered 18, 20, 11, 17, and 22 phylotypes from healthy teeth, pit and fissure caries, deep dentinal caries, smooth surface caries, and supragingival plaque, respectively. Sequencing analysis found the dominance of Actinomycs naeslundii and Fusobacterium nucleatum in the healthy teeth; Leptotrichia sp. in the pit and fissure caries; Actinomyces sp., Streptococcus mutans, and Rahnella aquatilis in the deep dentinal caries; Streptococcus mutans and Actinomyces sp. in the smooth surface caries; Enterobacter hormaechei and Streptococcus sanguinis in the supragingival plaque. Conclusions : Clonal analysis identified 6 phyla, 20 genera, and 51 species.

  • This study analyzes influences of parental education level on oral health with items of parental education level in their childhood and DMFTP from oral health checkup using data from the Fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey restricted to adults above 19 years old. As parental education level is higher, DMFTP decreases whereas people themselves think they have poor oral health if their parents have lower educational health. Also, those who have parents with higher education level tend not to have oral heath checkup in purpose of protection.

  • In this study, we are interested in comparing the protein profiles of acid-shocked and control cells of S. mutans isolated from Korean children with caries. The results of 2D gel electrophoresis showed that twelve proteins are up-regulated when the cells were grown under 20 mM lactic acid stress in the exponential phase. Up-proteins under acid stress were estimated a major key of the survival and proliferation of S. mutans in low pH environments. These proteins are estimated generally associated with three biochemical pathways: glycolysis, alternative acid production and branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis.

  • Due to the improvement of the composite resin and esthetic desire of the patient, amalgam restoration has been replaced by composite resin. However, still there are many unsolved problems, for example, technique sensitivity, polymerization shrinkage stress and limited mechanical properties. These factors results in fracture of the restoration and secondary caries of the tooth. Also the use of the dental bonding system should be used for the retention of the restoration. In this paper, I want to talk about the present and the future of the remineralizing component released from dental composite resin to overcome the secondary caries and there possibility in the clinical use.

  • We sequenced the genome of the Neisseria sp. KEM232 isolated from the smooth surface caries of human cavity of a 7-year old male in Republic of Korea by using the standard dilution plating technique. The genome comprises a single circular 2,371,912 bp chromosome with a G + C content of 58.5%, 2,210 protein-coding genes, 108 pseudo genes, 51 RNA genes, and one CRISPR array. Based on the 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and average nucleotide identity, the strain KEM232 is most closely related to Neisseria baciliformis.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between asthma and dental caries by using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), from 2013 to 2015. Methods: The study included 11,731 subjects who were ${\geq}19$ years of age and analyzed their demographic-, socioeconomic-, health-, and oral health care-related data. The chi-squared test and logistic regression analysis were conducted using complex sample analyses to examine the relationship between asthma and dental caries. Results: Compared with the control group, the risk for dental caries in the asthma group was 1.207 times higher, regardless of various confounding factors (p<0.001). In the asthma group, the mean DMFT score was significantly higher than that in the control group (p<0.001). After adjusting for confounding factors, the mean number of DMFT in subjects with asthma was 7.67, which was higher than that in subjects without asthma (7.28) (p<0.001). Conclusions: The study results show that asthma may be a risk factor for dental caries. Therefore, in order to prevent dental caries in asthma patients, oral hygiene education is important.
