  • To investigate impact property characteristics on the low temperature plate weld metal, the two different plates of the same steel grade were welded and evaluated by Mo bearing and no Mo containing welding consumables. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Multi pass welded Mo bearing weldment was not satisfied with the requirement of tensile strength, while no Mo containing one was satisfied with it 2) In the plate butt weldment, the impact property of weld metal was highly affected by both the welding consumable and plate.

  • In order to understand the properties of high heat input welds made by electro gas welding, two kinds of low temperature steel were welded. Welding heat inputs were controlled by width of root gap and ranged from 118 to 143kJ/cm. Chemical composition and micro-structural analysis were performed. To understand low temperature impact properties, Charpy impact test was conducted at several temperatures. The results were summarized as follows; 1) Grain size of weld metal and heat affected zone was increased with an increase in welding heat input. 2) Impact test values at fusion line were severely fluctuated regardless of base metals, showing enormous difference among the values at the same test temperature.

  • Instrumented indentation technique is a new way to evaluate nondestructive such mechanical properties as flow properties, residual stress and fracture toughness by analyzing indentation load-depth curves. This study evaluated quantitatively the flow properties of steels and residual stress of weldments. First, flow properties can be evaluated by defining a representative stress and strain from analysis of deformation behavior beneath the rigid spherical indenter and the parameters obtained from instrumented indentation tests. For estimating residual stress, the deviatoric-stress part of the residual stress affects the indentation load-depth curve, so that by analyzing the difference between the residual-stress-induced indentation curve and residual-stress-free curve, the quantitative residual stress of the target region can be evaluated. The algorithm for flow property evaluation was verified by comparison with uniaxial tensile test and the residual stress evaluation model was compared to mechanical cutting and ED-XRD results.

  • High capacity container carrier has been considered for many decades to transport the more containers at the same time. Therefore, it is required for high capacity container ship to be applied thicker plate to accomodate a number of containers compared to that of general container ship. To maintain the same productivity of this thicker plate, new welding process should be considered. One of the process for vertical-up position is 2 electrodes EGW(Electro Gas Welding). 2 ectrodes EGW was applied and evaluated whether it can be applicable or not. The heat input used for 72mm thick plate was 520k11cm. from the mechanical test, it is considered that this process can be applicable, showing satisfaction of mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation and impact property.

  • Inconel 625 is useful in variety of industrial applications because of the resistance to attack in various corrosive media at temperatures from $200^{circ}C$ to over $1090^{circ}C$, in combination with good low- and high-temperature mechanical strength. Recently, this material is also used widely in offshore process piping in order to extend the maintenance term and improve the quality of anti-corrosion. Nowadays, the flux cored wire is developed and applied for the better productivity in several welding position including the vertical position. In this study, the weldability and weldment characteristics of inconel 625 are considered in FCAW weld associated with the several shielding gases in viewpoint of welding productivity.

  • When material properties depend much on positions in a material or it is difficult to make test specimens from a material or component, an instrumented indentation test described in ISO 14577-1, 14577-2 or KS B 0950 can be used to measure material properties and damage. In this study, first of all, the principals of the instrumented indentation test, KS B 0950 are introduced and yield strengths, tensile strengths and work hardening exponents of base materials, heat affected zones and weld materials are measured. In addition, the influence of post-weld heat treatment on the material properties are investigated.

  • Welding sometimes should be done inside-hull after launching. The opposite side is contacted sea-water In this case, it should be a concern that the cooling rate expected very rapid may deteriorate microstructures, and hence these microstructures are hardened, cracking happens, or toughness would be impaired. Therefore, a test program simulating the situation has been planned and welded using the ship class materials (AH32, EH36) with the related welding consumables (E71Tl-1, E81Tl-K2) and then carried out to investigate the effect of cooling rate on weldments quality. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the welds of which the opposite side of arc is exposed to wet or flowing water are not affected by rapid cooling.

  • To investigate mechanical property on the low temperature plate weld metal, the two different plates of the same steel grade were welded and evaluated on the multiple pass welds and both side one run welds with different Mo contents welding consumables. The results are summarized as follows; 1) Welds made by no Mo containing wire showed very low impact values for type of material company. 2) Welds made by 0.25%Mo containing wire showed good impact value regardless of both side one run welds and multiple pass welds. 3) Welds made by 0.5%Mo containing wire showed good impact value for both side one run welds, while it was not acceptable value for multiple pass welds.

  • Due to the presence of ferrite phase in the finished welds, austenitic stainless steel welds (ASSWs) are considered susceptible to the thermal aging embrittlement during long-term service in light water reactor environment. In this study, the thermal aging embrittlement of typical ASSWs, E308 and ER316L welds, were evaluated after the long-term exposure up to 20,000 h at $400^{\circ}C$, which is considered as an accelerated thermal aging condition. After thermal aging, the decrease of tensile ductility and fracture toughness was observed. The microstructure observation with high resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that spinodal decomposition in ferrite phase of both E308 and ER316L welds would be the main cause of the degradation of mechanical properties. Also, it was shown that the difference of thermal ageing embrittlement between ER316L and E308 welds was significant, such that the reduction of fracture resistance for ER316L weld was much larger than that of E308 weld.

  • A prediction procedure has been developed to evaluate the microtructures and material properties of heat affected zone (HAZ) in pressure vessel steel weld, based on temperature analysis, thermodynamics calculation and reaction kinetics model. Temperature distributions in HAE are calculated by finite element method. The microstructures in HAZ are predicted by combining the temperature analysis results with the reaction kinetics model for austenite grain growth and austenite decomposition. Substituting the microstructure prediction results into the previous experimental relations, the mechanical material properties such as hardness, yielding strength and tensile strength are calculated. The prediction procedure is modified and verified by the comparison between the present results and the previous study results for the simulated HAZ in reactor pressure vessel (RPV) circurnferential weld. Finally, the microstructures and mechanical material properties are determined by applying the final procedure to real RPV circumferential weld and the local weak zone in HAZ is evaluated based on the application results.
