  • An analysis procedure for the MCFC channel flow has been developed to predict the fuel cell performance. The channel formed by the uniformly distributed trapezoidal supports is approximated by the porous medium that yields the equivalent pressure drop. The Wavier-Stokes, energy, and species equations are solved to obtain the velocity, temperature and concentration fields for a local current density which is computed from electrochemical correlations. The fuel cell characteristics, such as the temperature, pressure, mole concentration, voltage and current density distributions, are presented and discussed.

The Effect of Carbonate Particle Size Distributions on the Thickness Change of MCFC Electrolyte Matrix (전해질 입자크기에 따른 용융탄산염 연료전지 전해질 지지체의 두께변화에 관한 연구)

  • A mixed powder of electrolyte and matrix support materials with a proper proportion was used for the fabrication of an electrolyte matrix sheet. The purpose of this study is to reduce the large change in MCFC cell thickness occurring in the initial start-up period when separate sheets of electrolyte and support are used. A focus was put on how small the carbonate particles could be made. The particle size of the carbonate powder was controlled by ball milling and the distribution was measured using a particle size analyser. The thickness change was reduced to 20% by this approach, which could be compared to 27% observed in a conventional cell. The thickness changes of electrolyte matrix have linear relation sizes of carbonate powders.

  • The fuel cells have been investigated in the applications of marine as the high efficient and eco-friendly power generating systems. In this study, modeling of IR Type molten carbonate fuel cell (Internal Reforming Type molten carbonate fuel cell) has been developed to analyze the feasibility of thermal energy utilization. The model is developed under Aspen plus and used for the study of system performances over regarding fuel types. The simulation results show that the efficiency of MCFC system based on NG fuel is the highest. Also, it is also verified that the steam reforming is suitable as pre-reforming for diesel fuel.

  • A channel design which is closely related with the mass transport overpotential is one of the most important procedures to optimize the whole fuel cell performance. In this study, three dimensional results of a numerical study for gas distribution in channels of a molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC) unit cell for a 1kW class stack was presented. The relationship between the fuel and air distribution in the anode and cathode channels of the unit cell and the electric performance was observed. A charge balance model in the electrodes and the electrolyte coupled with a heat transfer model and a fluid flow model in the porous electrodes and the channels was solved for the mass, momentum, energy, species and charge conservation. The electronic and ionic charge balance in the anode and cathode current feeders, the electrolyte and GDEs were solved for using Ohm's law, while Butler-Volmer charge transfer kinetics described the charge transfer current density. The material transport was described by the diffusion and convection equations and Navier-Stokes equations govern the flow in the open channel. It was assumed that heat is produced by the electrochemical reactions and joule heating due to the electrical currents.

  • The molten carbonate fuel cell has a high temperature of waste heat and can constitute a bottoming cycle to increase the efficiency. Previous study used a bottoming cycle as steam turbine cycle. In this study, we are going to replace the bottoming cycle with a supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle. The system power was compared to consider replacing the bottoming cycle. As a result, the power of the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle at the present development stage is lower than that of the steam turbine cycle, but theoretically, the power can be larger than the steam turbine cycle. If the supercritical carbon dioxide power cycle improves the isentropic efficiency of the turbine by 89%, the isentropic efficiency of the compressor by 83%, and the effectiveness of the recuperator by 0.9, the power can be same to the steam turbine cycle.

  • 본 연구는 연료전지 중 용융탄산염을 전해질로 하는 MCFC의 MBOP에 포함된 부품으로 매우 중요한 역할을 하는 가습기와 이때 발생되는 폐열을 회수하기 위한 장치인 HRU에 관한 것이다. 가습기는 연료와 물이 가습기 상부로 유입되어 가습기 하부로 유입되는 배가스와 열교환을 하면서 물이 스팀화 되어 연료가 가습된 상태로 가습기 출구로 일정온도를 유지하며 배출된다. 또한 HRU는 가습기에서 배출된 고온의 배가스를 물을 이용하여 열교환을 통해서 열을 회수하여 난방 및 온수로 사용할 수 있는 열교환 장치를 말한다. 먼저 이들의 특성을 파악하기 위해 가습기 및 HRU를 설계, 제작하여 각각의 특성을 확인하였다. 가습기와 HRU의 성능 향상을 위해 먼저 열교환부에 적용될 튜브의 수치해석적 분석을 통해서 최적의 열전달 성능을 얻을 수 있는 가습기 및 HRU를 설계, 제작하였으며 이들의 성능을 파악하기 위해 120,000kcal/h 용량을 테스트 할 수 있는 장치를 구축하여, 이들의 열전달 특성, 압력강하, 회수 열량, 가습기 온도 등의 특성을 파악하였다. 이 장치를 통해서 확인된 가습기와 HRU의 특성은 수치해석을 통해서 얻은 값과 거의 유사함을 확인할 수 있었으며, 가습 성능도 효과적으로 달성할 수 있었다. 가습기와 HRU의 특성 중 압력강하 부분은 지속적인 연구가 필요한 부분이며, 가습기와 HRU의 일체화를 통하여 소형화 및 설치공간 축소 효과를 얻을 것으로 본다.

  • 연료 전지 시스템에서의 스택은 화학 공장의 반응기에 해당한다. 화학 공장에서 반응 생성물의 생산성을 최적화하기 위해 반응기 해석이 매우 중요한 것과 마찬가지로, 연료 전지 스택의 특성을 해석하고 최적 조건으로 설계 및 운전하는 것은 필수적이다. 스택에서 전기를 생산하는 과정에서 중요한 두 가지 운전 변수는 기체의 조성과 온도이며, 이론적인 해석을 위해서는 유체의 이동시에 열전달 및 각 성분별 물질 수지식과 전기 화학 반응식이 사용될 수 있다.(중략)
