The purpose of this study is to provide the information on genesis of obsidian occurring in the southwestern part of Ulleung Island, Korea, and to discuss its implications for volcanic activity through volcanological and mineralogical properties of obsidian. Obsidian occurs locally at the lower part of the Gombawi welded tuff, showing various complex textures and flow banding. Though obsidian is mostly homogeneous, it is closely associated with alkali feldspar phenocrysts, reddish tuff, and greyish trachyte fragments. The obsidian occurs as wavy, lenticular blocks or lamination composed of fragments. Cooling fractures developed on obsidian glass are characterized by perlitic cracks, orbicular or spherical cracks, indicating that obsidian rapidly quenched to form an amorphous silica-rich phase. It is evident that hydration took place preferentially at the outer rim relative to the core of obsidian, forming alteration rinds. The glassy matrix of obsidian includes euhedral alkali feldspars, diopside, biotite, ilmenite, and iron oxides. Microlites in glassy obsidian are composed mainly of alkali feldspars and ilmenite. Quantitative analysis by EPMA on the obsidian glass part shows trachytic composition with high iron content of 3 wt.%. Accordingly, obsidian formed with complex textures under a rapid cooling condition on surface ground, with slight rheomorphism. Such results might be induced by collapse of lava dome or caldera, which produced the block-and-ash flow deposit and the transportation into valley while keeping high temperatures.
The ichthyofauna and the structure of fish community were surveyed from April to November 1997 at eighteen stations in the Yonggang river which is a first tributary located at the middle reach of the Nakdong river system. During the surveyed period, 32 species belonging to ten families were collected. Of them cyprinid fish occupied 53.1% (17 species) and cobitid fish 15.6% (5 species). Thirteen species (40.6%) were known as Korean endemic species. Dominant species were Zacco temmincki (32.78%) and Moroco oxycephalus (15.10%). Zacco platypus, Pungtungia herzi. Niwaella multifasciata, and Odontobutis platycephala were common species. Rare species which occupied less than 0.1% of total individuals were Lampetra reissneri, Pseudorasbora parva, Squalidus chankaensis tsuchigae, Microphysogobio koreensis, Gobiobitia naktongensis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Nemacheilus toni, Silurus asotus, Silurus microdorsalis, Siniperca scherzeri, and Oreochromis niloticus. A tendancy were shown in regional distribution that Moroco oxycephalus dominated in upper stream, Zacco temmincki and Moroco oxycephalus in mid - upper stream, Zacco temmincki and Niwaella multifasciata in mid - lower stream, and Zacco platypus and microphysogobioid fishes in lower stream. St. 11 which located in mid- reach of Yongam stream and St. 15 and 18 which located in main stream had the most stable and diverse community structure, but St. 1, 5, and 7 were unstable and the simplest community structure.
Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic characteristics of alkaline lavas and tholeiites in Cheju Island show that the isotopic compositions of the former slightly overlap, but have relatively more depleted than the latter. However, in viewpoint of the two eruptional stratigraphies of tholeiites, the isotopic compositon of the older one is similar to those of alkaline rocks in Lava Plateau Stage after Lee (1982). These suggest that the parental magmas of alkaline lavas and tholeiites might have originated from the homogenous mantle sourve and that the characteristics of the mantle source to be partially melted might be different between the eruption stages. The isotopic signatures of the bolcanic rocks in Cheju Island overlap with those in Samoa Islands and South China Basin, indicating the DMM-EM IImixing trend. This is distingushed from the DMM-EM I trend of the Cenozoic volcanic rocks in Korea except for cheju Island and Northeastern China. The modelled binary mixing calculation between MM and EM IImaterials indicates that the mantle source of the volcanic rocks in Cheju Island has been mixed about less than 10% of enriched mantle material (EM II) with depleted mantle material (DMM). Concerned with the indentation model between North China Block (NCB) and South China Block (SCB) after Yin an Nie (1993), we suggest that the distinct isotopic features of DMM-EM I and DMM-EM IIof the Cenozoic volcanic rock in Korea as well as China can be explained by the difference of the nature of subcontinental lithospheric mantle as enriched mantle materials, i.e. EM I of NCB, while EM II of SCB.
The geologic structure of the Cheju volcanic island has been investigated by analyzing the gravity and magnetic data. Bouguer gravity map shows apparent circular low anomalies at the central volacanic edifice, and the maximum difference of the anomaly values on the island appears to be 30 mgal. The subsurface structure of the island is modeled by three-dimensional depth inversion of gravity data by assuming the model consists of a stacked grid of rectangular prisms of volcanic rocks bounded below by basement rocks. The gravity modeling reveals that the interface between upper volvanic rocks and underlying basement warps downward under Mt. Halla with the maximum depth of 5 km. Magnetic data involve aeromagnetic and surface magnetic survey data. Both magnetic anomaly maps show characteristic features which resemble the typical pattern of total magnetic anomalies caused by a magnetic body magnetized in the direction of the geomagnetic field in the middle latitude region, though details of two maps are somewhat different. The reduced-to-pole magnetic anomaly maps reveal that main magnetic sources in the island are rift zones and the Halla volcanic edifice. The apparent magnetic boundaries inferred by the method of Cordell and Grauch (1985) are relatively well matched with known geologic boundaries such as that of Pyosunri basalt and Sihungri basalt which form the latest erupted masses. Inversion of aeromagnetic data was conducted with two variables: depth and susceptibility. The inversion results show high susceptibility bodies in rift zones along the long axis of the island, and at the central volcano. Depths to the basement are 1.5~3 km under the major axis, 1~1.5 km under the lava plateau and culminates at about 5 km under Mt. Halla. The prominent anomalies showing N-S trending appear in the eastern part of both gravity and magnetic maps. It is speculated that this trend may be associated with an undefined fault developed across the rift zones.
The purposes of this study were to identify the misconceptions that students have on the magma and plate tectonics and to present the implications in developing textbooks as well as related curriculum of high school textbooks. Data were collected through questionnaire, consisting of some questions, short essays, and descriptive drawings, developed by the research team. A total of 140 high school students(9th graders) responded to those questionnaires and were interviewed for further information. It was reported that participants displayed various misconceptions related to magma and plate tectonics. The identified misconceptions are as follows: For the definition of magma, the 31% of participants misunderstood magma as lava. In respect to the generative mechanism of magma at subduction zone, over 90% of students responded that it is generated by frictional heat. The source of misconceptions were identified as a result from textbooks and related reference-books. For the concept of plates, 87% of students conceived 'crust or a lower part of the plates' as 'plates'. Most participants hold the right concept of oceanic ridge, whereas, 66% of them considered 'rift valley' as either 'divergence of continental plates' or 'converging boundary'. 63% of them defined 'collision boundary of continental plate' as either 'subduction zone' or 'diverging boundary'. For the definitions of the trench and Benioff zone, 86% of students responded them as the place of subduction or differing density between two converging plates. The students' misconceptions were resulted from the errors and insufficient explanation, inappropriate figures, and data presented in textbooks, reference-books, lecture, and web sites. The results of this study are implied to contribute the improvement of students' misconceptions.
Tachylite, black basaltic glass formed by the rapid cooling of molten basalt, locally occurs at the Basaltic Agglomerate Formation (BAF), the lowest formation of Ulleung Island. The purposes of this study are to characterize the occurrence and mineralogy of tachylite and to elucidate its formation condition, with emphasis on its fracture pattern, which can serve as implications for the early volcanic activity of Ulleung Island. To this end, we investigated the occurrence pattern of tachylite in the field and carried out mineralogical analyses using optical microscope, XRD, EPMA, and SEM. Tachylite occurs at the chilled margin of basic dikes which are distributed in Naesujeon, Dodong and Jeodong seasides, Turtle Rock, and Yaerimwon, whose widths vary from several cm to 10 cm. It is evident that the outer surface of tachylite is dense and smooth, whereas the inner surface, if fractured, is characterized by conchoidal fracture. The matrix of tachylite consists of amorphous, glass and some fine-grained phenocrysts present in tachylite include biotite, anorthoclase, sanidine, plagioclase, hornblende, and Fe-Ti oxides. The fracture patterns characteristic of tachylite are subrounded, oval, or less commonly polygonal, bounded by joints to form globule or lump. Taking into account texture and mineralogy, tachylite is interpreted to have undergone little subsequent alteration at low temperature via hydration or hydrolysis that could form clay minerals after it was formed. Because tachylite with peculiar fractures occurs as dikes in a close association with BAF, its presence is considered as reliable evidence that when tachylite formed, the most part of BAF was still under subaqueous conditions, or at least saturated with seawater.

Mount Fuji is the focus of intense study because of its potential hazard signaled by seismic, geologic and historical activity. Based on extensive seismic data recorded in the vicinity of Mt. Fuji, coda quality factor ($Q_c^{-1}$) using a single scattering model hypothesis, and intrinsic and scattering quality factor $(Q_i^{-1}$ and $Q_s^{-1})$ using the Multiple Lapse Time Window Analysis (MLTW) method was measured. To focus the study on the magmatic structure below Mt. Fuji, to the data were separated into two groups: a near-Fuji region of rays traversing an area with radius 5 km around the summit (R < 5 km), and a far-Fuji region of rays beyond a radius of 20 km around the summit (R > 20 km). The results of the study have a small error range due to the large data sample, showing that all $Q^{-1}$ values in near-Fuji area are greater than those of far-Fuji area, and $Q_i^{-1}$ for both the near and far-Fuji area is higher than $Q_s^{-1}$ at high frequencies. The $Q_i^{-1}$ values of the near-Fuji area are lower than those of the other volcanic areas considered, while values of $Q_s^{-1}$ are not. The low $Q_i^{-1}$ for the volcanic region of near-Fuji suggests that the magmatic activity, or percent of partial melt, at Mt. Fuji is not as active as hot spot volcanoes such as Kilauea, Hawaii.
Eruptive volumes of three monogenetic volcanoes (Songaksan tuff ring, Biyangdo scoria cone, and Ilchulbong tuff cone) with the youngest eruption age are calculated using the model, applied to Auckland Volcanic Field in New Zealand, to investigate the volcanic eruption scale and to evaluate volcanic hazard of Jeju Island. Calculated eruptive volumes of the volcanoes are $24,987,557m^3$, $9,652,025m^3$, and $11,911,534m^3$, respectively, and the volumes include crater infill, tuff ring (tuff cone), scoria cone, and lava flow. Volcanic explosivity indices of Songaksan tuff ring, Biyangdo scoria cone, and Ilchulbong tuff cone are estimated based on the eruptive volumes to be 3, 2, and 3 respectively, and eruption type is Strombolian to Surtseyan. It is assumed that the amount of emitted sulfur dioxide gas is $2-8{\times}10^3kt/y$ according to the correlation between volcanic explosivity index and volcanic sulfur dioxide index. Recent age dating researches reveal evidences of several volcanic activities during the last 10,000 years indicating the possible volcanic eruption in Jeju Island in the near future. Therefore, it is necessary for appropriate researches regarding volcanic eruption of the island to be accomplished. In addition, establishment of the evaluation and preparation system for volcanic hazard based on the researches is required.
The host rock of standing sculptured Buddha in the Yongamsa temple was macular biotite granite, which has gone through mechanical and chemical weathering. The principal rock-forming minerals are quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar, and biotite, the last two of which have been transformed into clay minerals and chlorite due to weathering processes. The bed rock around the Buddha statue is busily scattered with steep inclinations that are almost vertical and discontinuous planes with the strikes of $N8^{\circ}E$. The major joints have the strikes of N4 to $52^{\circ}W$ and N6 to $88^{\circ}E$ and the dips of 42 to $89^{\circ}$. Especially thee development of the joints that cross the major joints causes tile structural instability of the rock. The host rock of the Buddha image is separated into many different rock masses because of the also many different discontinuity, which group accounts for about $12{\%}$ of the rock. Thus it's estimated that the bed rock has not only plane and toppling failure but also wedge failure in all the sides. Since the earth pressure and the inclination pressure are imposed on the body of the Buddha in the basement rock, it's urgent to give a treatment of geotechnical engineering for the sake of its structural stability. The parts where serious fractures are seen should receive the hardening process using the fillers for stones. It's also necessary to introduce a landfill liner system in order to reduce the ground humidity. The rock surface of the Buddha statue are partly contaminated by lichens and bryophyte. The joints have turned into earth, which promotes the growth of weeds and plant roots. Thus biochemical treatments should also be considered to get rid of the vegetation along the discontinuous planes and prevent further biological damages.

Topex/Poseidon satellite altimetric data are used to estimate characteristics on the oceanic and atmospheric correction factors, and the mean sea level and its variations in the Yellow Sea, the East China Sea and the East Sea from September 1992 through August 1994(70cycles). For the atmospheric correction factors, the variations of dry troposphere, humid troposphere, ionosphere and inverted barometer were very small as a few centimeters, but the variations of electromagnetic bias were higher than other factors. For the oceanic correction factors, the variations of ocean tide(35cm in track 127 and 60cm in track 214) showed high ranges compared to elastic tide(5cm in track 127 and 1cm in track 214) and loading tide(1.8cm in track 127 and 1cm in track 214). It should be understood that the variations of ocean free surface is mainly under the influence of, firstly, ocean tide and, secondly, electromagnetic bias. Mean sea level in the Yellow Sea are higher than in the rest of Seas. Then its range generally comprised between -60cm and 210cm with mean value of about 100cm. Also its variations showed high values in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea, especially 5.689cm in Youngampo. This result is mainly due to the effects of local topography and tidal current.
