  • Topics discussed in this paper are engineering design of artificial reefs, design considerations of compressive strength and pH, materials of silica fume concrete and volcanic stones for reef construction, and field monitoring of artificial reefs. Six artificial reefs were deployed offshore at Biyangdo in July 2006, and succession patterns on the reefs were investigated bimonthly from July 2006 to October 2007. The spore-bag method, which has been widely used in Korea for the attachment of seaweed on artificial reefs, was applied to the developed reefs using the kelp Ecklonia cava, which is the dominant species in Jeju, and recruitment and growth patterns were observed.

  • Daejeonsa basalt in the Mt. Juwang area is composed of 12 lava flows alternate with 9 peperites, and each lava and peperite has variable thickness. Globular peperites yielded in Daejeonsa basalt are mixed basalt clasts with reddish shale. Based on field description, when lava flows over unconsolidated wet shale or injectes into unconsolidated wet shale, peperites were formed at the contacts between lava and shale. Daejeonsa basalt are massive lava flows with rare vesicules: some vesicules are found in upper part of a flow unit. The basalt has mainly pseudomorphs of olivine as phenocryst, and also plagioclase and clinopyroxene phenocrysts in rocks with higher Mg-number. Matrix is mainly subophitic texture, sometimes showing ophitic and intergranular textures due to different cooling rate. Clinopyroxene is augite(Wo$_{41.6}$En$_{45.1}$Fs$_{13.3}$), and plagioclase is mostly labradorite(An$_{55.0}{\sim}_{67.7}$), but some is andesine(An$_{44.3}$) and bytownite(An$_{74.5}$). Oxide minerals are composed of titanomagnetite and ilmenite.

  • Geophysical exploration using electric resistivity, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and impedance high-frequency (ZHF) surveys was conducted in Gujwa-eup, Jeju City, Jeju Island, an island in the Korea Strait, to confirm the existence of new caves near known caves. The exploration revealed a number of anomaly zones, presumed to be caves; 27 sites at suitable locations and depth ranges were selected for drilling and further surveys. However, contrary to predictions, most of the anomaly zones were clinker layers or paleosols intercalated with lavas. Only five boreholes intersected caves. The clinker layers and paleosols were possibly detected as anomalies owing to their different physical properties from the other rocks. Two of the five cave-finding boreholes penetrated Yongcheon Cave; a new cave was found at the other. The two boreholes that penetrated Yongcheon Cave were drilled in areas where the cave has not been previously reported, and thus helped correct an error in the cave distribution map. The cave newly discovered in this boring exploration is 180 m long, and it is connected to the upstream part of Dangcheomul Cave (110 m). The cave contains well-developed lava helictites, lava levees, and ropy structures; carbonate speleothems such as soda straws, stalagmites, columns, and curtain shawls are also well preserved. Notably, the unique shape of the carbonate speleothems is attributed to their growth in relation to the cavern water that flowed into the cave along plant roots.

  • This study was to identify the material characteristics and provenance of the Joseon (the 15th to 17th century) potteries from Ssangyongdong Yongam site in Cheonan. The pottery samples of the kilns and the workshops (habitation) from the study area have grey or red color with similar matrix but various shapes and different hardness, according to firing temperature. All of the pottery and the workshop soils were very similar patterns with characteristics of occurrences, mineralogy and geochemical evolution trend. But soils from around the site does not correspond with them. So the workshop soil that the fine clay is raw clay for making pottery in Yongam site. Firing temperature of soft-type potteries were presumed to be formed around $900^{\circ}C$ based on phase transition of clay minerals and mica. Hard-type pottery, mullite was detected and plagioclase was not detected by X-ray diffraction analysis, which means that potteries had experienced firing between 1,000 to $1,100^{\circ}C$.

  • This study reports the results about the petrography and geochemical characteristics of 10 representative volacanic rocks. The Cretaceous volcanic rocks distributed in the vicinity of the Kageo island composed of andesitic rocks, dacitic welded tuff, and rhyolitic rocks in ascending order. Sedimentary rock is the basement in the study area covered with volcanic rocks. Andesitic rocks composed of pyroclastic volcanic breccia, lithic lapilli tuff and cryptocrystallin lava-flow. Most dacitic rocks are lapilli ash-flow welded tuff. Rhyolitic rocks consists of rhyolite tuff and rhyolite lava flow. Rhyolite tuff are lithic crystal ash-flow tuff and crystal vitric ash-flow tuff with somewhat accidental fragments of andesitic rocks, but dacitic rocks. The variation of major and trace element of the volcanic rocks show that contents of $Al_2O_3$, FeO, CaO, MgO, $TiO_2$ decrease with increasing of $SiO_2$. On the basis of Variation diagrams such as $Al_2O_3$ vs. CaO, Th/Yb vs. Ta/Yb, and $Ce_N/YB_N$ vs. $Ce_N$, these rocks represent mainly differentiation trend of calc-alkaline rock series. On the discriminant diagrams such as Ba/La and La/Th ratio, Rb vs. Y + Nb, the volcanic rocks in study area belongs to high-K Orogenic suites, with abundances of trace element and ternary diagram of K, Na, Ca. According to the tectonic discriminant diagram by Wood, these rocks falls into the diestructructive continental margin. K-Ar ages of whole rocks are from andesite to rhyolite $97.0{\pm}6.8~94.5{\pm}6.6,\68.9{\pm}4.8,\61.5{\pm}4.9~60.7{\pm}4.2$ Ma, repectively. Volcanic rocks in study area show well correlation to the Yucheon Group in terms of rock age dating and geochemcial data, and derived from andesitic calc-alkaline magma that undergone low pressure fractional crystallization dominated plagioclase at <30km.

  • The Ipbong Andesite is a stratigraphic unit which is lain in the lowermost part of the Yucheon Group in the southeastern Yeongyang sbbasin. The Ipbong Andesite is lain on the Sinyangdong Formation and under the dacitic tuff, and consists in its lower andesitic tuffs and upper lavas. The andesitic lavas show some alignments of elongate vesicles filling with calcite amygdules and plagioclase microphenocrysts, and show rare imbrication of the microphenocrysts in vertical sections parallel to them. The flow directions which is measured from the flow indicators are laid along NNW-SSE trend in the eastern part and NNESSW in the southwestern part of the study area. Movement pattern from the flow lineations suggests that the Ipbong Andesite had a fanlike pattern by flowing southwards from the mid-northern part. Accordingly a small diorite stock in the mid-northern part area may probably be a source area of the Ipbong Andesite.

  • This study reports the results about the petrography of volcanic rocks in Namoo island and Namhyeongje island, off the southern coast of Busan City. The rocks in the Namhyeongje island composed of dacitic crystal-vitric welded tuff, showing phenocrysts of plagioclase, rock fragment with flow structure of elongated and flattened pumice fragments. In thin section it shows pyroclastic texture. The volcanic rocks in Namoo island are mainly dark grey-bluish dacite with phenocrysts of plagioclase and gradually changed to pink-greyish rhyodacite with auto-brecciated. In the northeastern part of the island, the volcanic rocks occurred as aggromerate with a poorly sorted mixture of blocks, lappili and ash and felsic feeder dike intrude the aggromerate. Major element composition of the volcanic rocks in Namhyeongje island and Namoo island are $SiO_2$ 73.6~74.4 wt.% and 65.5~68.3 wt.%, respectively. The volcanic rocks in these island are felsic volcanic rocks.

  • The Paekrogdam summit crater area, Mt. Halla, Jeju Island, Korea, composed of Paekrogdam trachyte, Paekrogdam trachybasalt, and Manseidongsan conglomerate in ascending order. Joint systems show concentric and radial patterns around the summit crate wall. The Paekrogdam crater is a summit crater lake which erupted the tuffs, scorias and lava flows of Paekrogdam trachybasalt after the emplaceent of Paekrogdam trachyte dome. SiO$_2$ contents of mafic and felsic lavas are respectively, 48.0∼53.7 wt.% and 60.7∼67.4 wt.%, reflecting bimodal volcanism. And lavas with SiO$_2$ between 53.7 wt.% and 60.7 wt.% are not found. According to TAS diagram and K$_2$O-Na$_2$O diagram, the volcanic rocks belong to the normal alkaline rock series of alkali basalt-trachybasalt-basaltic trachyandesite and trachyte association. Oxide vs. MgO diagrams represent that the mafic lavas fractionated with crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, magnetite and ilmenite and felsic trachyte of plagioclase and apatite. The characteristics of trace elements and REEs shows that primary magma for the trachybasalt magma would have been derived from partial melting of garnet peridotite mantle. In the discrimination diagrams, the volcanic rocks are plotted at the region of within plate basalt (WPB).
