Design Method for an MLP Neural Network Which Minimizes the Effect by the Quantization of the Weights and the Neuron Outputs (가중치 뉴런 출력의 양자화 영향을 최소화하는 다층퍼셉트론 신경망 설계 방법)

  • 이미 학습된 다층퍼셉트론 신경망을 디지털 VLSI 기술을 사용하여 하드웨어로 구현할 경우 신경망의 가중치 및 뉴런 출력들을 양자화해야 하는 문제가 발생한다. 이러한 신경망 변수들의 양자화는 결과적으로 주어진 입력에 대한 신경망의 최종 출력에서의 왜곡을 초래한다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 이러한 양자화로 인한 신경망 출력에서의 왜곡을 통계적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과에 의하면 입력패턴 각 성분의 제곱들의 합과 가중치의 크기들이 양자화 영향에 주로 기여하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 분석 결과를 이용하여 양자화를 위한 정밀도가 주어졌을 때, 양자화 영향이 최소화된 다층퍼셉트론 신경망을 설계하는 방법을 제시하였다. 그리고 제안된 방법에 의해 얻은 신경망과 오류역전파 학습방법에 의하여 얻은 신경망의 성능을 비교함으로써 제안된 방법의 효율성을 입증하였다. 실험결과는 낮은 양자화 정밀도에서도 제안된 방법이 더 좋은 성능을 보였다.Abstract When we implement a multilayer perceptron with the digital VLSI technology, we generally have to quantize the weights and the neuron outputs. These quantizations eventually cause distortion in the output of the network for a given input. In this paper first we made a statistical analysis about the effect caused by the quantization on the output of the network. The analysis revealed that the sum of the squared input components and the sizes of the weights are the major factors which contribute to the quantization effect. We present a design method for an MLP which minimizes the quantization effect when the precision of the quantization is given. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed method, we developed a network by our method and compared it with the one developed by the regular backpropagation. We could confirm that the network developed by our method performs better even with a low precision of the quantization.

  • The HFC network has a architecture of a star topology in fiber optic trunks, and tree and branch topology is used in the part of coaxial cable. It is well known that the HFC upstream channel is noisy. Ingress, common mode distortion and impulse noise exist in the upstream channel. In order to provide Quality of Service(QoS) to users with real-time data such as voice, video and interactive services, the evolving IEEE 802.14 standard for HFC networks must include an effective priority scheme. The scheme separates and resolves collisions between stations in a priority order. It is important to simulate protocols under a practical environment. The proposed algorithm in this paper is simulated with the assumption that the collision detector made certain mistake due to noises. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than existing tree-based algorithm under practical environment.

  • In a speech coding system using excitation source of voiced and unvoiced, it would be involved a distortion of speech qualify in case coexist with a voiced and an unvoiced consonants in a frame. So, We proposed TS(Transition Segment) including unvoiced consonant searching and extraction method in order to uncoexistent with a voiced and unvoiced consonants in a frame. This research present a new method of TS approximate-synthesis by using Least Mean Square and frequency band division. As a result, this method obtain a high qualify approximation-synthesis waveforms within TS by using frequency information of 0.547kHz below and 2.813kHz above. The important thing is that the maximum error signal can be made with low distortion approximation-synthesis waveform within TS. This method has the capability of being applied to a new speech coding of Voiced/Silence/TS, speech analysis and speech synthesis.

‘Korea’ in World Regional Geography Textbooks in English Edition(1931∼2002) (영문판 ‘세계지역지리학’ 교과서에 표현된 ‘한국’ (1931∼2002년))

  • This study examines Korean-related description from 1931 to 2002 in 18 university-level ‘World Regional Geography’ textbooks, being published as English. During this period, the amounts of Korean-related contents in world regional geography textbooks have gradually increased. The main Korean-related topics were generally ‘Colonization by Japan’, ‘Korean War’, ‘Rapid economic development in South Korea’, and ‘North Korea’. The distorted information and erroneous description about Korea were mostly found in textbooks. The national and cultural identity of Korea was severely distorted and made a fallacy by ‘accidental-centered’ thought. It is suggested that foreign geographers who refer ‘Korea’ in World Regional Geography textbooks need to critically re-examine the ways in which Korean-related contents are in proper place.

Analysis of laboratory test results on the constellation ratio in hierarchical modulation based AT-DMB (계층변조 기반 AT-DMB의 성상비에 따른 LAB 테스트 결과 분석)

  • AT-DMB system has been developed to increase data rate up to double of conventional T-DMB in same bandwidth while maintaining backward compatibility. The AT-DMB system adopted hierarchical modulation which adds BPSK signal or QPSK signal as enhanced layer to existing DQPSK signal. The enhanced layer signal should be small enough to maintain backward compatibility and to minimize the coverage loss of existing T-DMB service area. But this causes the enhanced layer signal of AT-DMB susceptible to fading effect in transmission channel. A turbo code which has powerful error correction capability is applied to the enhanced layer signal of the AT-DMB system for compensating channel distortion. We developed the prototype AT-DMB transmitter and receiver systems for performance evaluation. LAB test for analysing the effect of constellation ratio between existing base layer signal and enhancement layer signal, was conducted and the measurement results are shown with analysis comments.

An Effective Method for Replacing Caption in Video Images (비디오 자막 문자의 효과적인 교환 방법)

  • Caption texts frequently inserted in a manufactured video image for helping an understanding of the TV audience. In the movies. replacement of the caption texts can be achieved without any loss of an original image, because the caption texts have their own track in the films. To replace the caption texts in early methods. the new texts have been inserted the caption area in the video images, which is filled a certain color for removing established caption texts. However, the use of these methods could be lost the original images in the caption area, so it is a Problematic method to the TV audience. In this Paper, we propose a new method for replacing the caption text after recovering original image in the caption area. In the experiments. the results in the complex images show some distortion after recovering original images, but most results show a good caption text with the recovered image. As such, this new method is effectively demonstrated to replace the caption texts in video images.

Reality Check Test on the Momentum and Contrarian Strategy (모멘텀전략과 반대전략에 대한 사실성 체크검정)

  • This study tests the significance of momentum and contrarian strategy which challenge the weak efficient market hypothesis (EMH). If momentum and contrarian strategy can make extra return above the market, this can be a significant critics to the weak EMH. By using Monte Carlo simulation we have found that many existing returature, which test the significance of momentum and contrarian strategy, have a significance distortion problem. We test the significance of momentum and contrarian strategy by using reality check test of White(2000) which solve the problem of data snooping bias. The results are following. When we use the KOSPI index as the benchmark portfolio, we can get the best strategy of momentum strategy in the case of mean return. But in the case of Sharp ratio which is the performance measure adjusting risk, we find that the best strategy in the momentum and contrarian strategy can not dominate the performance of benchmark portfolio. Therefore we argue that weak EMH can not be rejected because of superior performance of momentum and contrarian strategy when we consider risk.

  • In this paper, an equalizer(RNE) using nonlinear multilayer combining techniques in Bayesian equalizer with a structure of radial basis function network is proposed in order to simplify the structure and enhance the performance of the equalizer(RE) using a radial basis function network. The conventional RE Produces its output using linear combining the outputs of the basis functions in the hidden layer while the proposed RNE produces its output using nonlinear combining the outputs of the basis function in the first hidden layer. The nonlinear combiner is implemented by multilayer perceptrons(MLPs). In addition, as an infinite impulse response structure, the RNE with decision feedback equalizer (RNDFE) is proposed. The proposed equalizer has simpler structure and shows better performance than the conventional RE in terms of bit error probability and mean square error.

  • To transmit a video bit stream over low bandwith, such as mobile, channels, encoding algorithms for high bit rate like H.263+ are used. In transmitting video bit-streams, packet losses cause severe degradation in image quality. This paper proposes a new algorithm for the recovery of missing or erroneous motion vectors when H.263+ bit-stream is transmitted. Considering that the missing or erroneous motion vectors are closely related with those of neighboring blocks, this paper proposes a temporal-spatial error concealment algorithm. The proposed approach is that missing or erroneous Motion Vectors(MVs) are recovered by clustering the movements of neighboring blocks by their homogeneity. MVs of neighboring blocks we clustered according to ALA(Average Linkage Algorithm) clustering and a representative value for each cluster is determined to obtain the candidate MV set. By computing the distortion of the candidates, a MV with the minimum distortion is selected. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits better performance in subjective and objective evaluation than existing methods.

Automatic Container Placard Recognition System (컨테이너 플래카드 자동 인식 시스템)

  • Various placards are attached to the surface of a container depending on the risk of the cargo loaded. Containers with dangerous goods should be managed separately from ordinary containers. Therefore, as part of the port automation system, there is a demand for automatic recognition of placards. In this paper, proposed is a system that automatically extracts the placard area based on the shape features of the placard and recognizes the contents in it. Various distortions can be caused by the surface curvature of the container, therefore, attention should be paid to the area extraction and recognition process. The proposed system can automatically extract the region of interest and recognize the placard using the feature that the placard is diamond shaped and the class number is written just above the lower vertex. When the proposed system is applied to real images, the placard can be recognized without error, and the used techniques can be applied to various image analysis systems.
