  • Objectives : This observation was to report the clinical effects of acupotomy in treating wrist ganglion. Methods : From 7th April, 2010 to 12th May, 2010, 1 female patient who had a wrist ganglion was treated with ultra sound-guided acupotomy therapy and self moxibustion & massage. Results : The patient's wrist ganglion was disappeared on the surface of the skin after just one time acupotomy therapy. Hypoechoic lesion was turned into hyperechoic lesion on a ultrasonographic. After 1 month, a wrist ganglion was recurred, but the size of wrist ganglion was reduced. Conclusions : Acuputomy therapy has an effect of reducing the wrist ganglion size, but patient self management is important in preventing recurrence. The ganglion not visible on the surface of the skin must be considered as a treatment target.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends on the Korean medical treatment of wrist ganglion and to develop the way of treatment. Methods We searched the papers with a key word of 'wrist ganglion' in Korean database (NDSL, KISS, Korean traditional knowledge portal) and Pubmed. Results Total 5 studies were found. Major treatment method was the acupuncture including electroacupuncture, pharmacopuncture and acupotomy. Minor treatments were moxibustion, wet cupping, herbal medicine and percutaneous aspiration. Conclusions Various treatment methods were used for curing wrist ganglion and they were effective. To map out the systemic treatment of Korean medicine on wrist ganglion, more clinical reports are needed.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation of 3 methods of bone age measurements. Methods : 102 children(49 boys, 53 girls) were involved in this study. We measured the height, weight and bone age based when they visited for the first time. We measured bone age using BoneAge of Sunlight Co.,Ltd. Two of the bone age measurement methods, Greulich-Pyle and Tanner-Whitehouse, were used to analyze the left dorsopalmar hand-wrist radiographs of 102 children who visited in Department of Pediatrics, O O University Oriental Hospital. This study was designed to investigate the correlation of the bone age between two methods. Results : The bone ages were related with age, height, weight and BMI according to this study(P<0.01). Each bone age assessment method had statistically significant correlation to each other(P<0.01). Conclusions : The ultrasound transonic velocity of inferior radiocarpal joint will become a sufficient diagnostic tool of bone age assessment if measurement error can be minimized by proper effort.

  • Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign proliferative disorder that results in villous hyperplasia and nodule formation in the synovium, tendon sheath and bursa. That most commonly affects the knee and the hip joint in adult. PVNS of the hand, the wrist, the shoulder and the elbow is rare and that of the elbow in children is particularly rarer. An eight-year-old boy had his left elbow pain and a lesion like benign bone tumor in the left fossa olecrani on plain x-ray. During the operation, abnormal synovial hyperplasia in his left elbow joint led us to diagnose PVNS. Therefore, open curettage of the lesion and radical synovectomy was performed. The specimen of the synovectomized tissue revealed PVNS. The left elbow pain subsided after the operation and the child restored a full range of motion of his left elbow. We reported this rare case of PVNS in a child's elbow joint mimicking the bone tumor together with a review of the literature.

  • This study investigated the dynamic instability of a ceramic-on-ceramic artificial hip joint system through complex eigenvalue analysis. We examined the mode-coupling mechanism through eigenvalue sensitivity analysis with the variation of system parameters. In addition, we constructed a finite element model including the negative slope of friction curve for investigating the negative-slope mechanism in the hip squeak problem. The numerical results show that the torsion-dominant mode becomes unstable due to the presence of the negative slope while the axial load is the important factor influencing the negative-slope type instability.

  • We can test for small structures located at the surface layer as high resolution ultrasonic techniques and small probes were developed. Accordingly ultrasound became a useful tool in the diagnosis and treatment of wrist diseases. It is important to understand the anatomical structures and apply clinical features as well as these technical aspects when using ultrasound. The purpose of this article is to evaluate the usefulness and approach of ultrasound about typical diseases according to the area of the wrist pain.

  • Among congenital brachymetatarsias fourth metatarsal bone shortening is most common form and unusually involves multiple metatarsal bones. We report a case of the patient with bilateral 1st and 4th multiple rays brachymetatarsia treated with callostasis. Twenty eight months after procedure, right side showed 1st metatarsal lengthening about 11.5 mm (29.23%) and 4th metatarsal 17.86 mm (35.87%). Twenty one months later, left side showed 1st metatarsal lengthening about 14.58 mm (36.8%) and 4th metatarsal 20.52 mm (43.01%). In healing index right side showed 1st metatarsal 3.4 month/cm, 4th metatarsal 2.5 month/cm and left side showed 1st metatarsal 4.2 month/cm, 4th metatarsal 2.3 month/cm. Final follow-up results presented excellent outcome in cosmetic problem, easy wear of shoes, and measurement of patient's self satisfaction.

  • It is clinically important to determine the physiologic mandibular position as the therapeutic position of the patients who needs the oral rehabilitation and occlusal treatment. Several methods have been employed for the recording the mandibular position. The gothic arch tracer is one of methods to record the mandibular position. The purpose of this study is to record the border position, chewing position, and myocentric position using the newly developed intra oral tracer in 10 subjects with TMJ clicking sound and 10 subjects without TMJ clinking sound.. This study showed that newly developed intra oral tracer allowed clinician the determination of the treatment position on the same horizontal plate which can be used in the full mouth rehabilitation and occlusal treatments. There was no statistically significant difference between clicking group and nonclicking group in the distance of border position-chewing position and the distance of border position-myocentric centric position.

  • When the manipulator collides with surroundings, there occurs an impulse. To reduce the impulse, the self motion should maintain the manipulator's position by the minimally effective mass. At this time, we can use the local joint torque minimization algorithm to resolve the redundancy. In this study, to reduce the impulse and damages by the impact between the manipulator and surroundings, new control algorithm for the minimization of the joint torque using the kinetic redundancy and the impact minimization is proposed. It adapts fuzzy logic and genetic algorithm to the conventional local joint torque minimization algorithm. The proposed algorithm is applied to a 3-DOF redundant planar manipulator. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm works well.

  • Purpose: We report case of neglected elbow dislocation for three years. Material and method: A 45 years old female patient presented with neglected elbow dislocation for three years. Since the patient had contracture in both lateral and medial collateral ligament of elbow, dissection was done. After total separation of posterior articular capsule and incision of anterior articular capsule, by manual manipulation, reduction of radiohumeral and ulnohumeral joints were obtained. We applied modified Morrey type hinged external fixation in the elbow and done early elbow exercise. Result and Conclusion: Since we have experienced a satisfactory result in the case with neglected elbow dislocation for 3 years by using open reduction and hinged external fixation, we report it with the literature.
