Design Evaluation of WEDM Based on Deformation Analyses and Axiomatic Design (변형해석 및 공리적 설계에 의한 와이어 방전가공기의 설계평가)

  • Recent industrial requirements for highly precise shape processing have brought the electric discharge machining (EDM) in great need. High precision in EDM is primarily achieved by high performance controllers. However there exists inherent precision loss due to structural deformation. On this background, we study structural deformation characteristics of wire cut EDM via finite element (FE) analysis and axiomatic design. Two different wire cut EDMs are selected as analysis models. 3D CAD package I-Deas is first used to construct FE models of wire cut EDMs, and then ABAQUS FE code is used for following structural analysis. Pertinency of FE mesh refinement is discussed in terms of ${\eta}-factor$. It is shown that performance accuracy of EDM depends strongly on the structural characteristics. Some design enhancements are suggested in an axiomatic design point of view. Finally we provide weight and temperature induced displacement discrepancies between wire end points as position functions of each subframe.

  • Micro drilling characteristics by EDM method was investigated. In detail, Micro tool electrode for EDM drilling was machined by use of WEDG method and micro hole was drilled using the machined tool electrode in SUS plate. The machining accuracy and time was compared in a different dielectric fluid. As a result, it was convinced that this method could be utilized as a fabrication technology of micro mold or micro 3 dimensional parts.

  • Punch and die plate which are press die parts can be made using machine tool or using both machine tool and W-EDM. When machine tool is used, the die life is 2,000,000 to 230,000 strokes. But with W-EDM, the die life is 700,00 to 800,000 strokes. This can be caused by the process deformation layer after W-EDM. SEM pictures of processed section before and after W-EDM are taken to see if the process deformation layer appeared. Also the elimination method is studied.

  • In this paper, Wire electric discharge grinding(WEDG) method for manufacturing the micro shaft was introduced and the machining characteristics was investigated. from the experimental results, it was concluded that high surface integrity could be obtained by use of dielectric fluid spraying method and small capacitive condenser.

  • Titanium alloys have lightness, high strength and good corrosion resistant characteristics, and broadly used in manufacturing parts for military and aerospace industries. And these alloys also are recognized for organism materials comparatively and used as fixing ones in the human body. Nevertheless thess alloys have excellent properties such as corrosion resistance, heat resistance, and good tensile strength, it is difficult to machine by traditional methods because of high hardness and chemically activated property. So higher tool wear is expected when cutting by tools. Therefore, it is required nontraditional machining process. And the mechanical characteristics such as surface structure and shape, hardness and bending strength are studied for wire electrical discharge machined and surface ground titanium alloys for various heat-treated conditions.

  • 고정밀 와이어컷 방전가공기는 높은 정밀도를 갖는 금형제작에 사용되고 있는 공작기계로서 최근 나노단위의 가공기술이 요구되는 산업추세에 발맞추어 고속, 고정밀 가공특성을 갖추도록 전반적인 성능개선이 이루어지고 있다. 본 논문에서는 기존 Thyristor를 이용한 위상제어 방식보다 우수한 특성을 갖는 스위칭모드 방식의 10kW급 직류 전원장치의 개발에 대해 기술하고있다.

  • In wire discharge machining which is using STD 11 as die materials, the major factors of machining speed are discharge voltage, discharge current, and discharge time. All of the three factors give the effect. Increasing of the discharge pulse time gets groove width wider and it relatively increases surface roughness and clearance. If no load voltage is decreased, surface roughness is good but it decreases machining speed. If on time is increased, machining speed will get faster and clearance and offset value also get bigger.

  • The characteristics of wire deflection, surface roughness and roundness were observed on changing discharge time for electrical discharge machining(EDM) of tungsten carbide in various conditions of thickness. The wire deflection was decreased as increasing discharge time and wire tension, the gap of deflection was decreased after thickness 60mm and discharge time of 6$\mu\textrm{s}$ due to the changing from fundamental mode to vibration mode. The deflection is the smallest at the water specific resistivity of 7.5 kΩ ㆍcm. The deflection is found to be decreased as increasing dwell time, and the result is due to the vibration of the pressure and the amount of the dielectric. The component of copper(Cu) and zinc(Zn), which is the main material of wire electrode, was observed for rough wire-cutting EDM of STD-11. This phenomena is found to be decreased as the number of EDM is increased. But it will be improved by changing the material and the shape of wire. The roundness of middle is found to be worse than that of upper and it is increased as the thickness of material is increased.
